which is now called Eleutheropolis, in the cave which Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite for four hundred drachmas, in the presence of the sons of Heth; from whom the Greeks also confess to have received written contracts. And Isaac, when he was forty years old, took 1.59 Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel, who was the eighth and last son of Nahor; for he had eight children by Milcah. And Nahor, the father of Bethuel, was Abraham's brother. His last son, Bethuel, was the father of Rebecca and Laban, Jacob's father-in-law. He pastured his sheep for twenty whole years. But Rebecca, being barren, after twenty years gave birth to two sons at the same time, Jacob and Esau, in the 60th year of Isaac. And it was the year of the world #223472. That Rebecca, having made a poultice, gave it to Jacob, and he brought it in with other gifts through Isaac to Abraham; whom holding in his bosom, blessing him in many ways, Abraham died, falling asleep, in the 15th year of Jacob's life. And in the 45th year of Jacob's life, Esau, being of the same age as him, took two wives, Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hivite. But Jacob, being sixty-three years old, had not known a woman at all, as he himself told his mother Rebecca. And in his 73rd year, and in the year of the world #223545 according to the accurate account, Jacob fled from the face of his brother Esau, and having served 7 years he took Leah, and after another seven he took Rachel. So from Leah he begot Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun and Dinah, and from Rachel, Joseph, and from the handmaid Bilhah, Dan and 1.60 Naphtali, and from Zilpah, Gad and Asher. Therefore, having spent a twentieth year with Laban, he fled from him, when Joseph was three years old. And crossing the Jordan he was blessed and was renamed Israel. And Jacob, remembering the vision he had seen on his arrival in Mesopotamia, goes up to Bethel. There, having fallen asleep, he saw the vision. And having tithed all that he possessed, lastly he submitted his children to the lot, and dedicates Levi to God, being 18 years old, and appoints him high priest, being the tenth from the last according to astrology. For Reuben, because of his father's concubine, was deprived of both the kingship and the priesthood, though he was the firstborn. And when Jacob came near Shechem to the city of Salem, Dinah suffers violence from Shechem; and vengeance is taken by Simeon and Levi, who in every way destroyed those around Shechem. And Rachel still bore Benjamin to Jacob, and having died is buried in Ephrath, where Bethlehem is now; for between Bethlehem and Jerusalem, at the hippodrome, is the tomb of Rachel, lying above the ground. And since the lineage from Levi runs down to Aaron and Moses, of whom one serves as priest and the other leads the people as general, it is fitting that the genealogy from Jacob is taken from them. And Rebecca, as Josephus says in the Antiquities, asked Isaac to bring Esau and Jacob and recon 1.61 cile them. Which indeed he did, and having exhorted them together, and having made them swear to keep peace with one another and to embrace the disposition of spiritual kinship, he foretold to Esau that if you rise up against Jacob, you will fall into his hands. After the death of Isaac, the sons of Esau provoked their father against Jacob and his sons. And having armed himself with nations, he came to war. But Jacob, having shut the gates of the city, urged Esau to remember the commands and exhortations of their ancestors. But when he would not endure it but rather grew more insolent, at the urging of Judah, Jacob drew his bow, and striking Esau on the right breast, he cast him down; and when he died, the sons of Jacob went out of the city and killed almost all of them. And first Rebecca died, and not long after Isaac also, to Jacob of the birthright
