with bodily ways of the ministry of the virtues, they return to the contemplation of kindred intelligible things. A foreign boy and a servant-girl are wrath and desire; whom the contemplative mind yokes always under the mastery of reason, for the service of the virtues, through courage and temperance, not giving them freedom, until the law of nature is swallowed up by the law of the Spirit, as death by life. Therefore, as long as the world lives in us, and the soul’s voluntary disposition towards material things, one must not grant freedom to these; lest, having been mixed with their sensible kin, they make war on the soul, and take it captive to the passions. But when we pass over into the age to come, and attain to dispassion, we will set them free, with wrath then being transformed into spiritual zeal and a temperate madness; and desire, into divine love and undefiled pleasure. 77.1233 If a man strikes out the eye of his male servant or of his female servant, he shall send them away free; and if he knocks out the tooth of his male servant or his female servant, he shall send them away free. A male servant and a female servant are those subject to another, some of whom are men, others women. And of these subject ones, the eye is the mind, which enlightens their souls; and the tooth is the understanding, by which they break down spiritual food. If anyone, therefore, either blinds the mind of his subjects by a blow of impiety, or of another sin, or injures their understanding, he is condemned to be deprived of authority over them, and proves himself unworthy to rule. If a man lies with a woman married to a husband, you shall kill them both. He who dares to defile the soul joined to God through faith and sanctification with the seed of his impious heresy, will suffer the ultimate penalty with her; he, as one who has plotted against another's marriage; she, as one who has dishonored the union with her husband. But if, he says, a man finds a virgin betrothed to a husband in a city and lies with her, both shall die. The young woman, because she did not cry out in the city; and the man, because he humbled his neighbor's wife. A virgin betrothed to a husband is a soul that has been called to piety, and is being catechized, but has not yet been perfectly joined to Christ through holy baptism. For the word of catechesis holds the place of a pledge. He, therefore, who corrupts her through a mixture of impious doctrines, will himself pay the ultimate penalty with her, and they will fall under the punishment of those, as has been said, who committed adultery; he, as one having transgressed against the wife who is now under the hand of the bridegroom soon to be, his neighbor, at least according to the account of humanity; she, as having suffered this in the city, I mean the Church, where there are many who are able to deliver; and because she did not cry out, she accepted it. But if, he says, a man finds the girl who is betrothed to another in a field, and having forced her, lies with her, you shall kill only the one who lay with her. But for the young woman there will be no sin worthy of death; because he found her in the field. The betrothed young woman cried out, and there was no one to help. For the field is the desolation of those able to defend, and the scarcity of teachers; here the passion is violent and without aid. Therefore, as it was unwilling, it is without condemnation. But if, he says, a man finds a virgin girl, and having forced her, lies with her, and is found, he shall give to the father of the young woman 50 didrachms of silver, and she shall be his wife. Here he means a virgin not yet betrothed to Christ through faith, but still remaining completely unjoined to him. If, then, some deceiver is united with 77.1236 such a one through the discourse of impious doctrines; as heretics do, often deceiving Greeks and Jews, and transferring them from one impiety to another impiety; he will not even so find the
