being preached, but, already believed and preached; which he also did in the beginning, wishing to establish them by the testimony of the many. Whereof I Paul was made a minister. And this contributes to its credibility. I, he says, Paul, a minister. For great was his authority, being henceforth sung of everywhere, and being the teacher of the world. Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the Church. 2. And what sequence is this? It seems to be disconnected, but it has great sequence. And, a minister, he says; instead of, contributing nothing from myself, but proclaiming the things of another. And so I believe, that I also suffer for Him; and not only do I suffer, but I also rejoice in suffering, looking to the hope that is to come; and I suffer not for myself, but for you. And I fill up, he says, that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh. It seems to be a great thing that he has uttered, but it is not of arrogance, far from it, but of much affection for Christ; for he does not want the sufferings to be his own, but His. And he spoke thus, wishing to make them his own. And what I suffer, I suffer for Him, he says; so do not acknowledge thanks to me, but to Him; for He Himself suffers these things. Just as if someone sent 62.327 to another, should ask another saying; I beg you, go to this man on my behalf; then that one should say, I do these things for this man's sake. So he is not ashamed to call these His sufferings too. For not only did He die for us, but even after dying He is ready to be afflicted for our sakes. He contended and strove to show Him even now to be in peril for the Church through His own body, and he aims at this, that you are brought near not through us, but through Him, even if we do these things; for we have not undertaken a work of our own, but His. And it is the same as if some division having obtained a general to defend it, should stand in the war, then when he has departed, the lieutenant should receive his wounds until the war is ended. Then that he does these things for His sake also, hear. For his body's sake, he says; wishing to say this, that I do not grant a favor to you, but to Christ; for what He ought to have suffered, I suffer in His stead; see how many things he establishes. He shows much love; just as in the second Epistle to the Corinthians writing he said, He has placed in us the ministry of reconciliation; and again, We are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us; this he also says here, I suffer for Him, that he might the more draw them to him. That is, Even if he who owes you has departed, yet I repay. For this reason he also said "what is behind," to show that he does not think he has yet suffered the whole. For you, he says, He suffers even after death, if indeed deficiencies still remained. This he does in another way in the Epistle to the Romans, saying; Who also makes intercession for us; showing that He was not satisfied with death alone, but also after this does countless things. Therefore he does not say these things exalting himself, but wishing to show Christ still even now caring for them. And he shows the word to be credible by adding, For his body's sake. For that it is so, and nothing unlikely, is clear from the fact that these things happened for His body's sake. See how He has joined us to Himself. Why then do you bring in angels in the middle? Whereof I was made, he says, a minister. Why do you bring in other angels? I am the minister. Then he shows that he himself did nothing, if indeed he is a minister. Whereof I was made, he says, a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, a dispensation. Either he means this, that He so willed it, that when He had departed, we

Τοῦτο ἐν τῇ πρὸς Ῥωμαίους ἑτέρως ποιεῖ λέγων· Ὃς καὶ ἐντυγχάνει ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν· δεικνὺς ὅτι οὐκ ἠρκέσθη τῷ θανάτῳ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα μυρία ποιεῖ. Οὐ τοίνυν ἑαυτὸν ἐπαίρων ταῦτα λέγει, ἀλλὰ τὸν Χριστὸν δεῖξαι βουλόμενος ἔτι καὶ νῦν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν φροντίζοντα. Καὶ τὸν λόγον ἀξιόπιστον δείκνυσι τῷ ἐπαγαγεῖν, Ὑπὲρ τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ. Ὅτι γὰρ οὕτως ἔχει, καὶ οὐδὲν ἀπεικὸς, δῆλον ἐκ τοῦ ὑπὲρ τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ ταῦτα γενέσθαι. Ὅρα πῶς ἡμᾶς συνῆψεν ἑαυτῷ. Τί τοίνυν ἐπεισάγετε διὰ μέσου ἀγγέλους; Ἧς ἐγὼ ἐγενόμην, φησὶ, διάκονος. Τί ἑτέρους ἐπεισάγετε ἀγγέλους; ἐγώ εἰμι διάκονος. Εἶτα δείκνυσιν ὅτι οὐδὲν αὐτὸς ἐποίησεν, εἴ γε διάκονός ἐστιν.
