and the Spirit of God according to power providentially moving through all things and stirring up the natural principle in each one and through it leading to an awareness of the things done amiss against the law of nature, the one who is aware and has a will flexible to the reception of right reasonings from nature. Indeed, we find many even of the most barbarous and nomadic men striving after virtue and rejecting the bestial laws that have long held sway among them.

Thus, then, the Holy Spirit is in all things simply. But in a more specific and different sense, it is in all those under the Law as a lawgiver and a foreteller of future 14Β_100 mysteries, creating in them an awareness of the transgression of the commandments, and knowledge of the perfection foretold according to Christ. Whence we find many of these also abandoning the old worship that lay in shadows, and eagerly turning to the new and mystical worship.

And in addition to the ways mentioned, it is also in all those who have by faith received the divine and deifying name of Christ, not only as a guardian and one who providentially stirs up the natural principle and as an indicator of the transgression and observance of the commandments and a herald of the proclamation according to Christ, but also as a creator of the adoption given by grace through faith. For as a maker of wisdom it is present only in those who have purified both soul and body through the precise ascetic practice of the commandments, conversing with them as its own through simple and immaterial knowledge and impressing their mind with the undefiled conceptions of ineffable things for the purpose of deification.

Therefore, it is in all things simply, insofar as it is the sustainer and provider for all things and the stirrer of the natural seeds; and more specifically in all those under the Law, inasmuch as it is an indicator of the transgression of the commandments and an illuminator of the promise foretold according to Christ; and in all those who are in Christ, in addition to the things mentioned, as an bestower of adoption. But as a maker of wisdom it is simply in none of the aforementioned, except those who understand and have made themselves worthy of its contemplative indwelling through a life in God. For everyone who does not do the divine will, even if he is a believer, has an undiscerning heart, as a workshop of evil reasonings, and a body laden with sins, as being continually held by the pollutions of the passions.

14Β_102 SCHOLIA 1. That the Holy Spirit is in all things as the maker and provider for all.

2. That the Holy Spirit is also in those under the Law as a lawgiver and a foreteller.

3. That the Holy Spirit is pre-eminently in Christians as the maker of divine adoption.

16. CONCERNING THE MOLTEN CALF IN THE WILDERNESS. 16. QUESTION 16 Who is the molten calf, and why does it say calf in the singular, but these are your gods, O Israel, in the plural, and what is the meaning of being ground to powder and scattered on the water, and what are the earrings and the other ornaments?

Response.
