These things the grace of the Spirit has taught, these things have instructed land [ξοδ. δὲ προ γῆν] and sea, these things also barbarians philosophize after the sojourn of their Savior, these things mainlanders, these things soldiers, these things those who inhabit the ends of the earth. 34. An exhortation to thanksgiving, and a turning away from superfluity. Let us therefore praise the provider of untold good things, the one who brought us back from the utmost irrationality to our former nature, the one who became poor for our sake, that we by his poverty might become rich; and with him his true Father, who so loved the world, as to give his only-begotten Son for its sake, that everyone who believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life; and with the Father and the Son the Holy Spirit, in whom being baptized we receive the pledge of the gift; through whom our souls are enlightened, through whom we are taught the economy, through whom we are instructed in theology, through whom we are delivered from irrationality, through whom we have been freed from error, and have known the truth. And let us cease meddling with the nature of the unbegotten, whether he is both good and just, and whether it is possible for someone to be who was not begotten or made; let us cease being overly curious about the generation of the Only-begotten, and seeking the manner, and making distinctions between unbegotten and begotten, and measuring the immeasurable; let us cease wrongly tracing the procession of the Spirit, and seeking to learn what is known only to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; let us abide by the boundaries which we have received; let us not move the boundaries which our Fathers have set; let us be content with the teaching given by the Spirit. Let us not wish to surpass the knowledge of Paul, who said he knew in part, and prophesied in part, and saw the truth in a mirror and in a riddle; let us await the enjoyment of the good things for which we hope. Then we shall learn the perfect things, when we will not be harmed by arrogance, when we will not fall through pride, when we will live in passionlessness. Therefore, for the present, let us abide in the teachings of the fathers, lest seeking greater things, we fall away even from the lesser; which our forefather Adam suf 75.1477 fered; for he, desiring to become God, also lost his being the image of God. 35. That it is necessary to say Theotokos and Anthropotokos. Therefore concerning theology let no one be sick with unbelief, let no one limp concerning the economy, but let one confess Christ born of a Virgin, as at once God and man according to each; for on this account the holy Virgin is called both Theotokos and Anthropotokos by the teachers of piety; the latter as having by nature born one like [a servant]; the former, as the form of the servant having the form of God united to it so through theology and economy let us praise the one who made known to us the hidden mystery, and by purity of life having prepared ourselves as temples for God, let us receive him as an indweller; and being enlightened by his rays, let us walk becomingly as in the day, awaiting the blessed hope and manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father with the Holy Spirit be glory and power unto ages of ages. Λ∆ʹ. Προτροπὴ εὐχαριστίας, καὶ ἀποτροπὴ περιουσίας. Ἀνυμνήσωμεν τοίνυν τὸν τῶν ἀμυθήτων ἀγαθῶν χορηγὸν, τὸν ἐκ τῆς ἐσχάτης ἀλογίας εἰς τὴν προτέραν ἡμᾶς φύσιν ἐπαναγαγόντα, τὸν δι' ἡμᾶς πτωχεύσαντα, ἵνα ἡμεῖς τῇ ἐκείνου πτωχείᾳ πλουτήσωμεν· καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ τὸν γνήσιον αὐτοῦ Πατέρα, ὃς οὕτως ἠγάπησε τὸν κόσμον, ὡς δοῦναι τὸν μονογενῆ αὐτοῦ Υἱὸν ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται, ἀλλ' ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον· καὶ σὺν Πατρὶ καὶ Υἱῷ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον, ἐν ᾧ βαπτιζόμενοι τὸν τῆς δωρεᾶς ἀῤῥαβῶνα λαμβάνομεν· δι' οὗ τὰς ψυχὰς φωτιζόμεθα, δι' οὗ τὴν οἰκονομίαν διδασκόμεθα, δι' οὗ τὴν θεολογίαν παιδευόμεθα, δι' οὗ τῆς ἀλογίας ἀπαλλαττόμεθα, δι' οὗ τῆς πλάνης ἠλευθερώθημεν, καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἔγνωμεν. Καὶ παυσώμεθα τὴν φύσιν πολυπραγμονοῦντες τοῦ ἀγεννήτου, εἰ καὶ αὐτὸς ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος, καὶ εἰ οἷόν τε εἶναί τινα μὴ γεννηθέντα ἢ γενόμενον· παυσώμεθα τὴν γέννησιν περιεργάζεσθαι τοῦ Μονογενοῦς, καὶ τὸν τρόπον ἐπιζητοῦντες, καὶ ἀγεννήτῳ καὶ γεννητῷ διαιτῶντες, καὶ μετροῦντες τὰ ἀμέτρητα· παυσώμεθα κακῶς ἀνιχνεύοντες τὴν τοῦ Πνεύματος πρόοδον, καὶ ζητοῦντες μαθεῖν ἃ μόνῳ Πατρὶ καὶ Υἱῷ καὶ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι γνώριμα· ἐμμείνωμεν οἷς ἐλάβομεν ὅροις· μὴ ὅρια μετενέγκωμεν ἃ ἔθεντο οἱ Πατέρες ἡμῶν· ἀρκεσθῶμεν τῇ δοθείσῃ διδασκαλίᾳ παρὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος. Μὴ βουληθῶμεν ὑπερβῆναι Παύλου τὴν γνῶσιν, ὃς ἐκ μέρους ἔφη γινώσκειν, καὶ ἐκ μέρους προφητεύειν, καὶ ἐν ἐσόπτρῳ βλέπειν καὶ ἐν αἰνίγματι τὴν ἀλήθειαν· ἀναμείνωμεν τῶν ἐλπιζομένων ἀγαθῶν τὴν ἀπόλαυσιν. Τότε τὰ τέλεια μαθησόμεθα, ὅτε δι' ἀλαζονείας οὐ βλαβησόμεθα, ὅτε δι' ὑπερηφανίας οὐ πεσούμεθα, ὅτε ἐν ἀπαθείᾳ βιωσόμεθα. Οὐκοῦν ἐν τῷ παρόντι ταῖς τῶν πατέρων διδασκαλίαις ἐμμείνωμεν, ἵνα μὴ μείζω ζητοῦντες, καὶ τῶν ἐλαττόνων ἐκπέσωμεν· ὃ πέπον 75.1477 θεν ὁ προπάτωρ Ἀδάμ· καὶ γὰρ ἐκεῖνος ἐπιθυμήσας γενέσθαι Θεὸς, καὶ τὸ εἶναι εἰκὼν Θεοῦ προσαπώλεσε. ΛΕʹ. Ὅτι χρὴ Θεοτόκον καὶ ἀνθρωποτόκον λέ-γειν. Τοίνυν περὶ τὴν θεολογίαν μηδεὶς ἀπιστίαν νοσείτω, μηδεὶς περὶ τὴν οἰκονομίαν χωλευέτω, ἀλλὰ τὸν ἐκ Παρθένου γεννηθέντα Χριστὸν, Θεὸν ὁμοῦ καὶ ἄνθρωπον ὁμολογείτω καθ' ἑκάτερον· διὰ τοῦτο γὰρ καὶ Θεοτόκος καὶ ἀνθρωποτόκος ἡ ἁγία Παρθένος ὑπὸ τῶν τῆς εὐσεβείας διδασκάλων προσαγορεύεται· τοῦτο μὲν ὡς φύσει τὸν [δούλῳ] ἐοικότα γεννήσασα· ἐκεῖνο δὲ, ὡς τῆς τοῦ δούλου μορφῆς, καὶ Θεοῦ τὴν μορφὴν ἡνωμένην ἐχούσης οὕτω διὰ θεολογίας καὶ οἰκονομίας τὸν τὸ μυστήριον ἡμῖν τὸ ἀποκεκρυμμένον γνωρίσαντα ἀνυμνήσωμεν, καὶ διὰ τῆς τοῦ βίου καθαρότητος ναοὺς ἑαυτοὺς τῷ Θεῷ κατασκευάσαντες, ἔνοικον αὐτὸν λάβωμεν· καὶ ταῖς ἀκτῖσιν αὐτοῦ φωτιζόμενοι, ὡς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ εὐσχημόνως περιπατήσωμεν, προσδεχόμενοι τὴν μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα καὶ ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ σὺν τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι δόξα καὶ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
