The king, hearing the rumors in the city about his wife, the Ilian Phaedra, was grieved with her; and being indignant 89 against his own son Hippolytus, he did not show it to them; but taking 89 a white bull, he gave it as a sacrifice to Poseidon, cursing his son Hippolytus and asking that he die a bad death. And it happened after three months, when Hippolytus went out on horseback to hunt and pursued a wild boar, his horse stumbled, he was thrown from the saddle and fell to the ground, holding the horse's bridle in his left hand, and when the rein was wrapped around his hand he was dragged by the horse; and having received a blow to his head, he was carried by the slaves into the city to the palace; and on the sixth day he died from the wound to his head; he was 22 years old. And King Theseus, mourning him, expressed his grief to Phaedra, reproaching her, having told her also of the rumors in the city and the country on account of Hippolytus and her. But Phaedra, hearing these things, swore to him that she knew nothing of the sort, but that she was devoted to him and that the people of the city had spread this slander in vain, being suspicious. But Theseus, not being persuaded by her, and being ashamed before his senate, put her out of his sight, ordering that she no longer be seen by him, being grieved also by the death of his own son; for he loved him. But Phaedra, being very chaste, and being afflicted both by the false accusation of the people of the city and the country, and being ashamed of her husband's rejection, did away with herself, and died being 39 years old, just as 90 the most wise Cephalion wrote these things, saying that they fabricated in vain the myth about the chaste Phaedra's passion for Hippolytus, having invented it poetically about her. In these times Eurystheus first reigned over the Lacedaemonians for 42 years, and 8 other kings after him, together they reigned for 246 years. and Alcmenus for 37 years. And the kingdom of the Lacedaemonians held everything for 325 years, as the most wise Africanus wrote. After Eli the prophet of the Jews, Saul, the son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, first reigned over the Jews for 20 years, in the city of Gibeon. And of the Corinthians, after the Lacedaemonians, Aletes then reigned for 35 years, and 11 other kings for 277 years. And later * reigned for 1 year. And the kingdom of the Corinthians held everything for 313 years. In the time of Saul, the Pisans first devised the Olympian contest, then celebrating the secular festival to Olympian Zeus, about which the most wise Africanus wrote a chronicle. And at that time Samuel the prophet became priest of the Jews; and he put forward, by God's command, David as king of the Jewish nation, the son of Jesse. FIFTH DISCOURSE OF THE TROJAN TIMES. And in the time of David, Priam, son of Laomedon, reigned over Ilium, that is, the country of the Phrygians. And in his reign then, Ilium and Dardanus and Troy and all the land of Phrygia are sacked by the Achaeans; in which are recorded Agamemnon and Menelaus and the rest with Neoptolemus Pyrrhus, as many as campaigned against Ilium on account of the abduction of Helen by Paris, also called Alexander; for he was smitten with love for her. For Helen was perfect, well-dressed, full-breasted, white as snow, with beautiful eyebrows, a fine nose, beautiful features, curly-haired, somewhat blond, having large eyes, charming, with a beautiful voice, a formidable sight among women; she was 26 years of age. And this pretext was found to be the beginning of the evils for the destruction of Troy and all the land of the Phrygians and its kingdoms.
