MATTHEW. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.

RULE 47. That one must not lay up treasure for oneself on earth, but in heaven; and what is

the manner of laying up treasure in heaven. Chap. 1. MATTHEW. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth

and rust destroys, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal. LUKE. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old; an unfailing treasure in the heavens. LUKE. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in the heavens. TO TIM. I. To be generous and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. RULE 48. That one must be merciful and generous; for those who are not so are condemned. Chap. 1. MATTHEW. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. LUKE. Give to everyone who asks of you. TO ROM. without natural affection, unmerciful, who, though they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve to die. TO TIM. I. To be generous and ready to share. That whatever one has more than what is needed for the necessities of life, he is a debtor to do good to that one, according to the command of the Lord who also gave us what we have. Chap. 2. LUKE. Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and whoever has food is to do likewise. TO COR. I. For what do you have that you did not receive? TO COR. II. your abundance for their need; so that their abundance may also become a supply for your need, that there may be equality, as it is written: 'He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.' 31.769 That one must not be rich, but poor, according to the word of the Lord. Chap. 3. LUKE. Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. TO COR. II. their extreme poverty has overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. TO TIM. I. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils, It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. That one must not be concerned with having an abundance of things for living; nor be eager for gluttony, nor for luxury; but to be pure from every kind of greed and adornment. Chap. 4. LUKE. Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. TO TIM. I. to adorn themselves not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. That one must not be anxious for one's own needs, nor hope in the things prepared for the present life, but to render to God the things concerning oneself. Chap. 5. MATTHEW. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor

ΟΡΟΣ ΜΖʹ. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ θησαυρίζειν ἑαυτῷ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ἀλλ' ἐν οὐρανῷ· καὶ τίς

ὁ τρόπος τοῦ ἐν οὐρανῷ θησαυρίζειν. Κεφάλ. Αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Μὴ θησαυρίζετε ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ὅπου σὴς

καὶ βρῶσις ἀφανίζει, καὶ ὅπου κλέπται διορύσσουσι καὶ κλέπτουσι. Θη σαυρίζετε δὲ ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐν οὐρανῷ, ὅπου οὔτε σὴς οὔτε βρῶσις ἀφανίζει, καὶ ὅπου κλέ πται οὐ διορύσσουσιν, οὐδὲ κλέπτουσιν. ΛΟΥ ΚΑΣ. Πωλήσατε τὰ ὑπάρχοντα ὑμῶν, καὶ δότε ἐλεημοσύνην. Ποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς βαλάντια μὴ παλαιούμενα· θησαυρὸν ἀνέκλειπτον ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Πάντα ὅσα ἔχεις πώλησον, καὶ διάδος πτωχοῖς, καὶ ἕξεις θησαυρὸν ἐν οὐ ρανοῖς. ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜ. αʹ. Εὐμεταδότους εἶναι, κοινωνικοὺς, ἀποθησαυρίζοντας ἑαυτοῖς θεμέλιον καλὸν εἰς τὸ μέλλον, ἵνα ἐπιλάβωνται τῆς ὄντως ζωῆς. ΟΡΟΣ ΜΗʹ. Ὅτι δεῖ ἐλεήμονα καὶ εὐμετάδοτον εἶναι· κατηγο ροῦνται γὰρ οἱ μὴ τοιοῦτοι. Κεφάλ. Αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Μακάριοι οἱ ἐλεήμονες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Παντὶ τῷ αἰτοῦντί σε δί δου. ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜ. Ἀστόργους, ἀνελεήμονας, οἵτινες τὸ δικαίωμα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπιγνόντες, ὅτι οἱ τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντες ἄξιοι θανάτου εἰσίν. ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜ. αʹ. Εὐμεταδότους εἶναι, κοινωνικούς. Ὅτι πᾶν ὅπερ ἂν ἔχῃ τις πλέον τοῦ ἐπιδεομένου τῶν πρὸς τὸ ζῇν ἀναγκαίων, ὀφειλέτης ἐστὶν ἐκεῖ νον εὐεργετῆσαι, κατ' ἐντολὴν τοῦ Κυρίου τοῦ καὶ δεδωκότος ἃ ἔχομεν. Κεφάλ. Βʹ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Τὸ ὑμῶν περίσσευμα εἰς τὸ ἐκείνων ὑστέρημα· ἵνα καὶ τὸ ἐκείνων περίσσευμα γένη ται εἰς τὸ ὑμῶν ὑστέρημα, ὅπως γένηται ἰσότης, καθὼς γέγραπται· Ὁ τὸ πολὺ οὐκ ἐπλεόνασε· καὶ ὁ τὸ ὀλίγον οὐκ ἠλαττόνησεν. 31.769 Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ πλουτεῖν, ἀλλὰ πτωχεύειν, κατὰ τὸν τοῦ Κυρίου λόγον. Ἡ κατὰ βάθους πτωχεία αὐτῶν ἐπερίσσευσεν εἰς τὸν πλοῦτον τῆς ἁπλότητος αὐτῶν. ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜ. αʹ. Οἱ δὲ βουλόμενοι πλου τεῖν ἐμπίπτουσιν εἰς πειρασμὸν καὶ παγίδα, καὶ ἐπιθυμίας πολλὰς ἀνοήτους καὶ βλαβερὰς, αἵ τινες βυθίζουσι τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς ὄλεθρον καὶ ἀπώλειαν. Ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστιν ἡ φιλαργυρία, ἧς τινες ὀρεγόμενοι, ἀπεπλανήθη σαν ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως, καὶ ἑαυτοὺς περιέπειραν ὀδύναις πολλαῖς. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ φροντίζειν τοῦ περισσεύεσθαι ἐν τοῖς πρὸς τὸ ζῇν· οὔτε περὶ τὴν πλησμονὴν, οὔτε περὶ τὴν πολυτέλειαν σπουδὴν ἔχειν· καθαρεύειν δὲ παντὸς εἴδους πλεονεξίας καὶ καλλωπισμοῦ. Κεφάλ. ∆ʹ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Ὁρᾶτε, καὶ φυλάσσεσθε ἀπὸ πάσης πλεονεξίας, ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ περισσεύειν τινὶ ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ. ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜ. αʹ. Κοσμεῖν ἑαυτὰς μὴ ἐν πλέγμασιν, ἢ χρυσῷ, ἢ μαργαρίταις, ἢ ἱματισμῷ πολυτελεῖ. Ἔχοντες διατροφὰς καὶ σκεπάσματα, τούτοις ἀρ κεσθησόμεθα. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ μεριμνᾷν τῆς ἰδίας ἕνεκεν χρείας, οὐδὲ τοῖς ἡτοιμασμένοις πρὸς τὴν παροῦσαν ζωὴν ἐπελπίζειν, ἀλλὰ τῷ Θεῷ ἀποδιδόναι τὰ καθ' ἑαυτόν. Κεφάλ. Εʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Οὐ δύνασθε Θεῷ δουλεύειν καὶ μαμμωνᾷ. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν, μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε, καὶ τί πίητε, μηδὲ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε. Οὐχὶ ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστι τῆς τροφῆς, καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος; Ἐμβλέψατε εἰς τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν, οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν, οὐδὲ
