Having described the testimonies concerning our Savior from the historical writings, we will add to them in order those from the poetical books, gathered in this second compilation of the Selections; because these indeed take precedence in time over the other prophecies. And so first let us examine those from the book of Psalms. Ps. Of Psalm 1. Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat on the seat of pestilent men; but his will is in the law of the Lord, and in his law he will meditate day and night. And who could one point out as having driven virtue to such an extraordinary degree as to fall into no manner of sin whatsoever, which seems to me to be signified by, 'he has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly,' and, 'he has not stood in the way of sinners,' and 'he has not sat on the seat of pestilent men'; by which I think is indicated the one who is called blessed being completely without taste of sin; for to not only not walk in such things, nor, as it were, having walked to have made progress, but indeed not even to have sat down, nor yet to have set foot on them at all in the first place, nor to have stood in them, how is this not something wonderful and rare? But the praises of the man indicated are presented to the mind rather as spoken in the imperfect tense; 68 for he says, he neither walked, nor stood, nor sat in such forms of wickedness, by which is shown the ever and always virtuous state of the one who is called blessed. One might see many, then, who have achieved righteousness through attention and practice, but surely no one such as the psalm describes; and if one should contemplate how great a thing it is to flow smoothly in all things and to prosper according to God, stumbling in nothing, nor falling away from the goal of virtue, so that on this account it is said in the Psalm, 'and whatsoever he does shall be prospered'; furthermore if one should understand what it is to
