himself. What of all things remained in its form, unless something was previously held by such an evil? But alone of all, the Cappadocian people did not perceive the common calamity of the churches, whom our great champion saved in the midst of temptations. 1.1.144 These are the results 20of the cowardice20 of our teacher; these are the achievements of one 20who cowered before the harsher toils,20 not one who finds favor among wretched old women, nor practices deceiving silly women who are susceptible to every deceit, nor judges it a great thing to be admired by the condemned and the corrupt, but one who showed through his works the strength of his soul and the unchangeable, courageous, and noble quality of his spirit. 1.1.145 whose achievement was the salvation of the whole fatherland, the peace of our church, an example of every good to those who live according to virtue, the overthrow of opponents, the advocacy of the faith, the security of the weaker, the strengthening of the more zealous, all things that are believed to be of the better 1.1.146 portion. In these narratives alone hearing and sight [of] the events concur; for it is the same thing both to narrate noble deeds in word and to show by deed the testimony of the words, and to confirm both by each other, the memory from what is seen and the events from what is said. 1.1.147 But I know not how my discourse has been carried so far outside the subjects before us, turning to each of the things spoken insolently by the slanderer. And yet for Eunomius there is no small gain in the discourse’s dwelling on such things, being prevented from proceeding to the more important matters 1.1.148 by the accusation of human wrongdoings. Therefore, just as it is useless to reproach one who is being tried for murder for rashness in his words (for the murder, having been proved, is sufficient to bring on the sentence of death, even if no rashness of words is proved along with the murderer), so it seems good to me to bring his impiety alone to refutation, and to let the slanders against us go. For it is clear that when his wickedness has been detected in the greatest and most important matters, all the rest is virtually refuted along with them, even if we do not go through each point 1.1.149 precisely. Therefore, the main point of the things constructed by him is a blasphemy against the dogma of piety, both in his previous discourse and in the one now being corrected by us, and his every effort is to demolish and set aside and completely overthrow the pious conceptions concerning the only-begotten God and concerning the Holy Spirit. 1.1.150 In order, therefore, that his construction against the dogmas of the truth might be shown to be most false and inconsistent, first I will set forth his statement concerning these things verbatim, and then I will go over what has been said again, examining each of them separately. 1.1.151 20The whole account of our dogmas is completed from the highest and most sovereign substance, and from that which exists through it and after it is first of all other things, and thirdly from that which is ranked with neither of these, but is subordinated to the one because of the cause, and to the other because of the energy by which it came to be, including, of course, for the completion of the whole account, both the energies that follow the substances and the names appropriate 1.1.152 to them.20 And again, since each of these substances is purely simple and in every way one, both existing and being conceived according to its own dignity, and since the energies are circumscribed by their works, and the works are measured by the energies of those who produced them, it is altogether necessary that the energies following each of the substances be lesser and greater, and that some hold the first rank and others the second, and, to speak generally, that they reach as great a difference as the works might reach; 1.1.153 since it is not even permissible to say that the energy is the same by which he made the angels or the stars and the heaven or man, but insofar as some works are more ancient and more honorable than other works, by so much also
