and having spent a little time with them, having nothing to charge them with, we turned away as from enemies. ELEMENT C. TITLE 7. -Concerning those who fight against knowledge, and find fault with themselves. Of Philo. -Cain indeed, since he was ignorant of the magnitude of the curse—of never falling into death—pays simpler penalties. But his imitator, being unable to take refuge in the same defense of ignorance, reasonably endures double penalties, 96.517 For this reason from Lamech seventy times seven, for the aforementioned reason, according to which the second one, having sinned and not been chastened by the punishment of the one who had done wrong before, also completely takes on his punishment, which was simpler. Just as in numbers the units also have a much multiplied value assimilated to the tens which contain them, so Lamech, fighting against knowledge, was against himself. Of the same, from the same. - To be sensible of one’s errors and to find fault with oneself is the mark of a just man. But to be in a state of insensibility makes the terrible things of an evil man more grievous to the soul. TITLE 17. -Concerning a courageous, and chaste, and intelligent woman. Of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer. -Only the husbands must be considered yokefellows to their wives, to whom they were united according to the will of God. Of Philo, from the Questions on Exodus. -It is said by natural philosophers that the female is nothing other than an incomplete male. Of the same. -And somehow the minds of women are weaker, being unable to comprehend anything intelligible outside of things perceptible to the senses. TITLE 18. -Concerning wicked women, and adulteresses, and fornicators, and those filled with all evil. Of Eusebius. - A woman who is self-loving and immoderately jealous, and terrible at corrupting a man's character, and leading him on with continuous spells. For having practiced words of flattery, and the rest of her hypocrisy, as if on a stage, whenever she entices the sight and hearing of those who have been deceived, she deludes the ruling mind as if it were her subject. And if children are born, having been filled with pride and boldness, whatever she formerly insinuated deceitfully with irony, these things she blurts out with more daring insolence, and acting shamelessly, she compels him to do them. ELEMENT D. TITLE 12. -Concerning the correction of an evil life to the good; that it is well-pleasing and dear to God. And this is accomplished by remembering one's errors and abominating them; and by approaching with desire those things that are praiseworthy and good. Of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, from the epistle to the Ephesians. -These are the last times, brethren; for the rest, let us be ashamed. Let us fear the long-suffering of God, lest it become a judgment for us. For let us either fear the wrath to come, or let us love the present grace in this life, only let us be found in Christ Jesus. TITLE 23. -Concerning the just; that they are despised and slandered by the unjust and impious. Of Saint Methodius, from the works against Por- 96.520 phyry. -This must be called most beautiful in truth, and praiseworthy, etc. TITLE 27. -Concerning the just man and justice. Of Didymus, on Hosea. -Strength always follows justice, just as weakness follows injustice. TITLE 30. -Concerning creation. Of Saint Irenaeus, from the 4th [book] of the refutation and overthrow of falsely-named knowledge. -With God there is at once power and wisdom, etc. TITLE 31. -Concerning the glorification of God. Of Ignatius the God-bearer, to the Ephesians. - When you frequently gather in the same place, the powers of Satan are overthrown, and his destruction is dissolved by the concord of your faith. Of Saint Gregory the Wonderworker, from 'That there is no idol in the world.' -The honor rendered to the truly existing God is in every way also the honor of the one who honors Him; but the honor rendered to the non-existent God is, on the contrary, also the dishonor of the one who honors him. Of Theotimus. -And truly to have remembrance of God is to have remembrance of life, but to have forgotten Him becomes death. TITLE 39. -Concerning good slaves. Of Saint Ignatius, from the epistle to Polycarp. -Let slaves not desire to be set free at the common expense, but let them serve all the more to the glory of God, that they may obtain a better freedom from God. ELEMENT E. TITLE 42. -Concerning almsgiving, and doing good to the poor. Of the saint
