yourselves. Why do you not rather suffer wrong? why do you not rather let yourselves be defrauded? But you yourselves wrong and defraud, and that your brothers. That one must not fight, or avenge oneself; but with all, if possible, be at peace, according to the commandment of the Lord. Chap. 2. MATTHEW. You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil; but whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also, and so on. MARK. Have love among yourselves, but also be at peace with one another. TO THE ROMANS. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all; not avenging yourselves, beloved; but give place to wrath. TO TIMOTHY 2. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone. That one must not defend against the wrongdoer for the sake of avenging another who is wronged. Chap. 3. MATTHEW. Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 31.776 And Jesus said to him; Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. LUKE. And he sent messengers ahead of him; and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them, as Elijah also did?" But he turned and rebuked them, and they went to another village.

RULE 50. That one must also reconcile others to the peace that is in Christ.

Chap. 1. MATTHEW. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. JOHN. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. RULE 51. That one must first correct oneself for any fault, and then accuse another. Chap. 1. MATTHEW. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. TO THE ROMANS. Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? RULE 52. That one must not be indifferent toward sinners, but be grieved and mourn over them. Chap. 1. LUKE. And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, "Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes." TO THE CORINTHIANS 1. It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not even named among the Gentiles, for a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! And have you not rather 31.777 mourned, so that he who has done this deed might be removed from among you? TO THE CORINTHIANS 2. that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn for many of those who have sinned before and have not repented. That one must not be complacent toward sinners. Chap. 2. LUKE. If your brother sins, rebuke him; and so on. TO THE EPHESIANS. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ μάχεσθαι, ἢ ἑαυτὸν ἐκδικεῖν· πρὸς πάν τας δὲ, εἰ δυνατὸν, εἰρηνεύειν, κατὰ τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Κυρίου. Κεφάλ. Βʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἀγγέλους πρὸ προσ ώπου αὑτοῦ· καὶ πορευθέντες ἦλθον εἰς κώμην Σαμαρειτῶν, ὥστε ἑτοιμάσαι αὐτῷ. Καὶ οὐκ ἐδέ ξαντο αὐτὸν, ὅτι τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἦν πορευό μενον εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ. ΟΡΟΣ Νʹ. Ὅτι δεῖ συμβιβάζειν καὶ ἑτέρους εἰς εἰρήνην τὴν ἐν Χριστῷ.

Κεφάλ. Αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Μακάριοι οἱ εἰρηνοποιοὶ, ὅτι αὐ τοὶ υἱοὶ Θεοῦ κληθήσονται. ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Εἰρήνην ἀφίημι ὑμῖν· εἰρήνην τὴν ἐμὴν δίδωμι ὑμῖν. ΟΡΟΣ ΝΑʹ. Ὅτι δεῖ πρότερον ἑαυτὸν διορθοῦσθαι ἐφ' ᾡτινιοῦν ἐλαττώματι, καὶ τότε ἑτέρῳ ἐγκαλεῖν. Κεφάλ. Αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Τί δὲ βλέπεις τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου, τὴν δὲ δοκὸν τὴν ἐν τῷ σῷ ὀφθαλμῷ οὐ κατανοεῖς; ἢ πῶς ἐρεῖς τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου· Ἄφες ἐκβάλω τὸ κάρφος ἐκ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ σου· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἡ δοκὸς ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σου; Ὑποκριτὰ, ἔκβαλε πρῶτον τὴν δοκὸν ἐκ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ σου, καὶ τότε διαβλέψεις ἐκβαλεῖν τὸ κάρφος ἐκ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου. ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜ. ∆ιὸ ἀναπολόγητος εἶ, ἄνθρωπε, πᾶς ὁ κρί νων. Ἐν ᾧ γὰρ κρίνεις τὸν ἕτερον, σεαυτὸν κα τακρίνεις· τὰ γὰρ αὐτὰ πράσσεις ὁ κρίνων. Οἴδαμεν δὲ, ὅτι τὸ κρῖμα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστι κατὰ ἀλήθειαν ἐπὶ τοὺς τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντας. Λο γίζῃ δὲ τοῦτο, ὦ ἄνθρωπε, ὁ κρίνων τοὺς τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντας, καὶ ποιῶν τὰ αὐτὰ, ὅτι σὺ ἐκφεύξῃ τὸ κρῖμα τοῦ Θεοῦ; ΟΡΟΣ ΝΒʹ. Ὅτι οὐ χρὴ ἀδιαφορεῖν ἐπὶ τοῖς ἁμαρτάνουσι, λυπεῖ σθαι δὲ καὶ πενθεῖν ἐπ' αὐτοῖς. Κεφάλ. Αʹ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Καὶ ὡς ἤγγισεν, ἰδὼν τὴν πόλιν, ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ' αὐτὴν, λέγων· Ὅτι, εἰ ἔγνως καὶ σὺ, καί γε ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ τὰ πρὸς εἰρή νην σου· νῦν δὲ ἐκρύβη ἀπὸ ὀφθαλμῶν σου. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. αʹ. Ὅλως ἀκούεται ἐν ὑμῖν πορνεία, καὶ τοιαύτη πορνεία, ἥτις οὐδὲ ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ὀνομάζεται· ὥστε γυναῖκά τινα τοῦ πατρὸς ἔχειν. Καὶ ὑμεῖς πεφυσιωμένοι ἐστὲ, καὶ οὐχὶ μᾶλλον 31.777 ἐπενθήσατε, ἵνα ἐξαρθῇ ἐκ μέσου ὑμῶν ὁ τὸ ἔργον τοῦτο ποιήσας. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. βʹ. Μὴ πάλιν ἐλθόντα με πρὸς ὑμᾶς ταπεινώσῃ με ὁ Θεός μου, καὶ πενθήσω πολλοὺς τῶν προημαρτηκότων, καὶ μὴ μετανοησάντων. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ ἐφησυχάζειν τοῖς ἁμαρτάνουσιν. Κεφάλ. βʹ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ.
