to hear it being narrated. And having arrived at Cucusus, and from there being led away to Pityus, when he was in Comana, he ended his life there, at the age of fifty-two, having been archbishop of the queen of cities for five and a half years. However, divine justice did not doze, but quickly came after that thrice-wretched empress. For not yet three months had passed after the death of the father Chrysostom, and she met a violent end. For she died while carrying the embryo, and sharp birth-pangs seized her; and when it had putrefied within, the womb of the empress 97 also shared in the putrefaction, and so she wretchedly departed this life. However, when that golden-mouthed father was cast out of the church, a certain Arsacius was brought in instead, and having been bishop for two years, he dies; after whom Atticus was ordained. And since Eudoxia had died before her spouse and emperor, Arcadius himself also followed her not long after, having reigned after the death of Theodosius his own father for fourteen years and three months and some days. And it is said that the column standing in the place called Pittacia is of Eudoxia. And when he was dying, Arcadius left his own son as successor to the empire, Theodosius, called the Small in contrast to his grandfather or because he happened to be at a very youthful age when his father died; for he was then only seven years old. But let the matters concerning him be postponed; but let the account briefly go through the matters concerning Honorius. This man, having been left as emperor of the elder Rome 98 by his father at a very young age (for he was ten years old), was under the guardianship of Stilicho by the will of his father, a man who was preeminent among those in Rome and had been entrusted with the administration of public affairs. He therefore takes his daughter Maria as his wife. When she died, it is said that he married her sister Thermantia, who was of an immature age. And she too died quickly. Being a simpleton, he was hated by the powerful men in Rome. And knowing that he was being plotted against, having moved to Ravenna, it is said that he sent to Alaric, the ruler of the nation of the Vandals or Goths, asking him to campaign against Rome, wishing in this way to take revenge on the citizens of Rome on account of their hatred toward him. And Alaric did indeed attack Rome, but did not sack it, but made a truce with the Romans, taking whatever money was found in the palace and Honorius's sister Placidia, and returned home. And he handed over the maiden to a certain count Constantius to be guarded; but the one who had received her ran 99 away and brought her to her brother, and he joined her to him in marriage, having honored him as a senator, and then also proclaimed him emperor; for Honorius was without offspring of his own. But Constantius was slain shortly after, when Placidia had borne him children, Valentinian and Honoriada. Some, therefore, relate these things thus; but others say that Stilicho was slain, and that those in Rome hated Honorius, and that he moved to Ravenna. And that Alaric, despising his foolishness, marched against Rome and took it by siege; and when it was captured, a certain man in tears stood before Honorius, announcing that "Rome has been captured by Alaric." And he, his body shaken by a spasm at the news and striking his thighs with his hands, said, "Until just now Rome was here; how then has she been captured?" And the messenger, understanding and groaning loudly, said, "I am speaking about the city and not about the bird." For this emperor had an exceedingly large hen, in which he delighted, which he named Rome, on whose account he also cried out, thinking that she had been captured. 100 And Honorius, having fallen victim to dropsy, dies, having lived for forty years, and having reigned ingloriously for thirty of these. And a certain John, having become a usurper in Rome, drove out from there Honorius's sister Placidia with her two children, Valentinian and Honoriada.
