Of Cyril, from the 5th discourse of those against Julian. -That of almsgiving, etc. Of the same, from the 18th book. -Nothing makes us so cleansed as the splendors of brave deeds for piety, and to pity those in want and in lack of necessities. For the Proverb-writer also writes somewhere that by alms and faith sins are cleansed away. From the same. -The first and best brave deed is to distribute one's possessions to the needy, and to despise the luxury of wealth, and rather to store up in heaven the hope to come; and to exchange the temporary for the eternal, and to take up what is lasting instead of what is shaken, no one of those accustomed to being prudent would doubt. TITLE 47. -Concerning good bishops, and those who keep the commandments of God. Of the same (Genesis). - Joseph acquired all the land of the Egyptians for Pharaoh ...... except the land of the priests alone, Joseph did not acquire. For Pharaoh gave gifts as a portion to the priests; and they ate the portion. Scholion. Because the priests are dedicated to God, 96.521 both they and the things belonging to them, and for this reason Pharaoh did not acquire their land. Scholion. Consider how even before the law the things belonging to the priests happened to be tax-exempt, and this among gentiles. From Numbers. -Moses said to the Lord: Let the Lord, the God of the spirits, appoint, etc. Scholion. When the priesthood according to fleshly kinship was abolished through Jesus Christ our God, the priesthood through the laying on of hands was introduced, in imitation of the Spirit-bearing Jesus son of Nave, with the pious questioning of the ecclesiastical dogmas. Of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, from the epistle to the Smyrnaeans. -Follow the bishop, all of you, as Jesus Christ follows the Father, and the presbytery as the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as a commandment of God. Let no one do anything of those things pertaining to the Church without the bishop. Let that be considered a valid Eucharist which is under the bishop, or to whomever he himself may entrust it. Wherever the bishop appears, there let the multitude be, just as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to hold a love-feast, but whatever he may approve, this is also pleasing to Jesus Christ, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid. It is reasonable, therefore, for us to become sober, as we have time to repent towards God; it is good to know God and the bishop; he who honors the bishop is honored by God; he who does anything without the bishop's knowledge serves the devil. From the [epistle] to Polycarp. -Pay heed to the bishop, that God may also [pay heed] to you. I am a ransom for those who are subject to the bishop, presbytery, deacons; may my portion be with them in God. To the Ephesians. -Let us be eager not to oppose the bishop, that we may be subject to God. And the more one sees a bishop who is silent, the more let him be feared. For everyone whom the master of the house sends for his own stewardship, you must receive him thus, as the one who sent him. Therefore, one must look upon the bishop as the Lord himself. Of the same to the Magnesians. -For the honor of God who has willed us, it is fitting to obey the bishop without any hypocrisy. Since one does not deceive this visible bishop, but deludes the invisible God. And for such a one, the matter is not with flesh, but with God who knows the secret things. It is fitting, therefore, not only to be called Christians, but also to be so; just as some indeed call him bishop, but do everything without him. Such people do not seem to me to be of good conscience, because they do not assemble validly according to the commandment. 96.524 From the same. -Let there be nothing among you which will be able to divide you, but be united with the bishop, and with those who preside, as a type and a teaching of incorruptibility. Therefore, just as our Lord did nothing without the Father, neither through himself, nor through the apostles, so neither should you do anything without the bishop, nor try to make anything appear reasonable on your own. Of the same. -When you are subject to the bishop, you seem to me to be living not according to man, but according to
