to receive them, for no other reason than to call them to repentance, in whatever way is possible without sin. Chapter 3. MATTHEW. And behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining at table with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" But when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." LUKE. Now all the tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to hear him. And the scribes and the Pharisees grumbled, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them." So he told them this parable, saying: "What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?" and so forth. 2 THESSALONIANS. But if anyone does not obey our word through this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. And do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. 2 CORINTHIANS. But if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but in some measure—not to put it too severely—all of you. For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. That it is necessary to turn away from those who, after every form of care has been fulfilled toward them, persist in their own wickedness. Chapter 4. MATTHEW. If your brother sins against you, go, reprove him between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother; but if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the Church; and if he refuses to listen even to the Church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. RULE 53 That a Christian must not bear a grudge, but from the heart forgive those who have sinned against him. Chapter 1. MATTHEW. For if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive your trespasses; but if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

RULE 54. That we must not judge one another in matters permitted by Scripture.

Chapter 1. MATTHEW. Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce,

you will be judged. LUKE. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned. TO THE ROMANS. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats. For God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. For one person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord; and the one who does not observe the day, in honor of the Lord he does not observe it. And he who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, for he gives thanks to God. And he who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord, and gives thanks to God. And after a little: So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer. TO THE COLOSSIANS. Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food, or of drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath, which are a shadow of the things to come. That one must not be contentious concerning things permitted by Scripture. Chapter 2. TO THE ROMANS. Blessed is the one who does not judge

Καὶ ἰδοὺ πολλοὶ τελῶναι καὶ ἁμαρ τωλοὶ ἐλθόντες συνανέκειντο τῷ Ἰησοῦ, καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ. Καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, εἶπον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ· ∆ιὰ τί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει ὁ διδάσκαλος ὑμῶν; Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς, ἀκούσας, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἰατροῦ, ἀλλ' οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες. Πορευθέντες δὲ μάθετε τί ἐστιν· Ἔλεον θέλω, καὶ οὐ θυσίαν. Οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον καλέσαι δι καίους, ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτωλοὺς εἰς μετάνοιαν. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Ἦσαν δὲ αὐτῷ ἐγγίζοντες πάντες οἱ τελῶναι καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ. Καὶ δι εγόγγυζον οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, λέγον τες, ὅτι οὗτος ἁμαρτωλοὺς προσδέχεται, καὶ συνεσθίει αὐτοῖς. Εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὴν παρα βολὴν ταύτην, λέγων· Τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἔχων ἑκα τὸν πρόβατα, καὶ ἀπολέσας ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν, οὐ καταλείπει τὰ ἐνενηκονταεννέα ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ πορεύεται ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπολωλὸς, ἕως οὗ εὕρῃ αὐτό; καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. ΠΡΟΣ ΘΕΣΣ. βʹ. Εἰ δέ τις οὐχ ὑπακούει τῷ λόγῳ ἡμῶν, διὰ τῆς ἐπιστολῆς τοῦτον σημειοῦσθε, καὶ μὴ συναναμίγνυσθε αὐτῷ, ἵνα ἐντραπῇ. Καὶ μὴ ὡς ἐχθρὸν ἡγεῖσθε, ἀλλὰ νουθετεῖτε ὡς ἀδελφόν. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. βʹ. Εἰ δέ τις λελύπηκεν, οὐκ ἐμὲ λελύπηκεν, ἀλλὰ ἀπὸ μέρους, ἵνα μὴ ἐπιβαρῶ πάντας ὑμᾶς. Ἱκανὸν τῷ τοιούτῳ ἡ ἐπιτιμία αὕτη, ἡ ὑπὸ τῶν πλειόνων· ὥστε τοὐναντίον ὑμᾶς μᾶλλον χαρίσασθαι, καὶ παρα καλέσαι, μή πως τῇ περισσοτέρᾳ λύπῃ καταποθῇ ὁ τοιοῦτος. Ὅτι δεῖ τοὺς, μετὰ τὸ πληρωθῆναι πάντα τρόπον τῆς εἰς αὐτοὺς ἐπιμελείας, ἐπιμένοντας τῇ ἰδίᾳ κακία ἀποστρέφεσθαι. Κεφάλ. δʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Ἐὰν ἁμάρτῃ εἰς σὲ ὁ ἀδελφός 31.780 σου, ὕπαγε, ἔλεγξον αὐτὸν μεταξὺ σοῦ καὶ αὐτοῦ μόνου. Ἐάν σου ἀκούσῃ, ἐκέρδησας τὸν ἀδελφόν σου· ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀκούσῃ, παράλαβε μετὰ σοῦ ἕνα ἢ δύο, ἵνα ἐπὶ στόματος δύο ἢ τριῶν μαρτύρων σταθῇ πᾶν ῥῆμα. Ἐὰν δὲ παρακούσῃ αὐτῶν, εἰπὲ τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ· ἐὰν δὲ καὶ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας παρακούσῃ, ἔστω σοι ὥσπερ ὁ ἐθνικὸς καὶ ὁ τε λώνης. ΟΡΟΣ ΝΓʹ Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ τὸν Χριστιανὸν μνησικακεῖν, ἀλλ' ἀπὸ καρδίας ἀφιέναι τοῖς εἰς αὐτὸν ἡμαρτηκόσιν. Κεφάλ. αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Ἐὰν μὴ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώ ποις τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν, οὐδὲ ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος ἀφήσει τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν· ἐὰν δὲ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν, ἀφήσει καὶ ὑμῖν ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος.

ΟΡΟΣ Ν∆ʹ. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ κρίνειν ἀλλήλους ἐπὶ τοῖς ὑπὸ τῆς Γρα φῆς

συγκεχωρημένοις. Κεφάλ. αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Μὴ κρίνετε, ἵνα μὴ κριθῆτε. Ἐν ᾧ γὰρ κρίματι κρίνετε,

κριθήσεσθε. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Μὴ κρίνετε, καὶ οὐ μὴ κριθῆτε· μὴ καταδικά ζετε, καὶ οὐ μὴ καταδικασθῆτε. ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜ. Ὃς μὲν πιστεύει φαγεῖν πάντα, ὁ δὲ ἀσθενῶν λά χανα ἐσθίει. Ὁ ἐσθίων τὸν μὴ ἐσθίοντα μὴ ἐξου θενείτω, καὶ ὁ μὴ ἐσθίων τὸν ἐσθίοντα μὴ κρινέ τω. Ὁ Θεὸς γὰρ αὐτὸν προσελάβετο. Σὺ τίς εἶ ὁ κρίνων ἀλλότριον οἰκέτην; Τῷ ἰδίῳ Κυρίῳ στήκει, ἢ πίπτει· σταθήσεται δέ· δυνατὸς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ Θεὸς στῆσαι αὐτόν. Ὃς μὲν γὰρ κρίνει ἡμέραν παρ' ἡμέραν, ὃς δὲ κρίνει πᾶσαν ἡμέραν, ἕκα στος ἐν τῷ ἰδίῳ νοῒ πληροφορείσθω. Ὁ φρονῶν τὴν ἡμέραν, Κυρίῳ φρονεῖ· καὶ ὁ μὴ φρονῶν τὴν ἡμέραν, Κυρίῳ οὐ φρονεῖ. Καὶ ὁ ἐσθίων, Κυρίῳ ἐσθίει· εὐχαριστεῖ γὰρ τῷ Θεῷ. Καὶ ὁ μὴ ἐσθίων, Κυρίῳ οὐκ ἐσθίει, καὶ εὐχαριστεῖ τῷ Θεῷ. Καὶ μετ' ὀλίγα· Ἄρα οὖν ἕκαστος ἡμῶν περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λόγον δώσει τῷ Θεῷ. Μηκέτι οὖν ἀλλή λους κρίνωμεν. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΛ. Μὴ οὖν τις ὑμᾶς κρινέτω ἐν βρώσει, ἢ ἐν πόσει, ἢ ἐν μέρει ἑορ τῆς, ἢ νουμηνίας, ἢ σαββάτων, ἅ ἐστι σκιὰ τῶν μελλόντων. Ὅτι οὐ δεῖ διακρίνεσθαι ἐπὶ τοῖς ὑπὸ τῆς Γραφῆς συγκεχωρημένοις. Κεφάλ. βʹ ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜ. Μακάριος ὁ μὴ κρίνων
