peoples, and many nations shall go, for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Concerning this, then, it is also said here of the mountain of Christ, but I was appointed king by him upon Zion his holy mountain; by whom was he appointed? It is clear that it was by the Father who said to him, you are my son, today I have begotten you; and, ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession. And that the prophecy is true and the promise is not false, it is possible to discern from those who in so short a time have come from every nation to the worship of God through our Savior; or let those who shamelessly dare to look against its fulfillment say, to whom could they apply the prophecy if they do not accept that these things are so? For as to king David, concerning whom some thought these things were said, they would not be able to show that he suffered such things, as rulers and kings of nations and peoples plotting against him; and when or for what great deeds did the Lord say to David, you are my son, today I have begotten you? And how could, ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession, be said as to him whose kingdom was clearly limited only to Israel and the borders of Judea? And why do they not accept the Christ who has come, let them answer. Is it because he suffered, that they must therefore expect another who will suffer 72 nothing such as this one did? And how would the prophecies be fulfilled which foretell that the Christ of God would suffer very many things, both in many other places, and not least in the psalm at hand? And must one think that he sowed the teaching concerning the God of all in the inhabited world without God; and is it possible even to conceive of a human impulse and the mere attempt of an ordinary man having such strength and power that through his teaching alone, without a cooperating divinity, he could dispose the various souls of his hearers concerning the God of all, to persuade them of these things long ago, and even now to persuade them to abandon their ancestral customs, and a lawless, savage, and licentious life, and to attend only to piety, and to prefer this not only to their existing substance, but even to life itself, which is desired by all? But I do not think that anyone of those who are willing to be even moderately fair-minded would not agree that such great things have come about through our Savior with the cooperation of a divine and superhuman power; from which at once both the divinity of the incarnate Lord is demonstrated, and at the same time the proofs are clearly presented that he has received from the Father the nations as an inheritance, and the ends of the earth as his possession, in accordance with the prophecy at hand. But to narrate everything concerning the psalm is not for the present time, especially since it has already received a most complete narration. 73 Ps. Psalm 3. -3. And it is easy to take the third psalm as referring to Christ, in accordance with the preceding ones, teaching about the plot against him through the words, Lord, how they have increased who afflict me? and about his resurrection, which is also indicated through the words, I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord will help me. And each verse of the Psalm would fit Christ, having received its proper interpretation; and it is reasonable that it, being placed third, should prophesy concerning the resurrection of the Lord in accordance with the prophecies before it; for the first, as we have explained, teaches of his irreproachable life and his conduct without sin; the second, the things concerning the passion; therefore, following these, the third in succession prophesies the things concerning his resurrection. Ps. Psalm 8. -4. The first parts of the eighth psalm, from O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name in all the earth, seem to be prophesied concerning the calling from the nations; wherefore it is also inscribed for the winepresses; winepresses being understood as those throughout
