regarding those who are debtors in money, in sins; let no one be resentful, if indeed he does not wish to wrong himself. For by not forgiving, you do not grieve that one so much as you wrong yourself. For against that one, indeed, when you prosecute, God will not prosecute; but when you leave it alone, either he himself will prosecute, or he forgives your sins. But how, when you do not forgive your neighbor, do you seek the kingdom? So that we may not suffer this, let us forgive all; for we forgive ourselves; and let us pardon, so that God may pardon us our sins, and thus we may obtain the good things to come, and the rest.

HOMILY V. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies; fulfill my joy, that you be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind; doing nothing through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves; Look not every man on his own things, but every man also

on the things of others. 1. Nothing is better, nothing more affectionate than a spiritual teacher; it surpasses the goodwill of any natural father. See, at any rate, what sort of supplication this blessed one offers to the Philippians for their benefit. For what does he say, when exhorting about harmony, the cause of all good things? see how earnestly, how vehemently, how with much sympathy. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, he says. That is, if you have any consolation in Christ; as if he were to say: If you have any regard for me, if you have any care for me, if you ever received any good from me, do this. And we use this manner of disposition when we ask for a matter which we place before all else; for if we did not place it before all else, we would not wish to receive the reward for all things in it, and through it we would say the whole is shown. We, then, remind of fleshly claims. As if a father were to say to a son: If then you have any reverence for a father, if any memory of your upbringing, if any affection for me, if any honor you have received from me, if any goodwill, do not be an enemy to your brother; that is, In return for all those things I ask this reward. But Paul is not so; for he reminds of nothing carnal, but of all things spiritual. But what he says is this: If you wish to give me any consolation in temptations, and encouragement in Christ, if any comfort of love, if to show any fellowship in the spirit, if you have any bowels and mercies, fulfill my joy. If any bowels and mercies. Paul calls the harmony of the disciples mercies for himself, showing that the danger is extreme if they are not in harmony. If it is possible, he says, to receive consolation from you, if it is possible to receive some comfort from your love, if it is possible for you to have fellowship in spirit, if it is possible for you to have fellowship in the Lord, if it is possible to be pitied and shown mercy by you, show the return for all these things in love; I have received all these things, if you love one another. Fulfill my joy. See, so that the exhortation might not seem to have been made as to those who are still lacking, he did not say, Make for me, but, Fulfill; that is, You have begun to plant in me, you have already imparted to me to be at peace, but I desire to come to the end. What do you wish, tell me, that we may deliver you from dangers? that we may supply something to you? None of these things, he says, but, That you be of the same mind, having the same love, in 62.214 which you began, of one accord, of one mind.
