your Father who is in heaven. We have spoken about these things ten thousand times, and we do not cease speaking; only let something more be done. We do not grow numb nor do we grow weary, we do not lose heart in speaking; only do not you, by not listening, seem to be annoyed. For a person seems to be annoyed when he does not do what is said; for he who does it, continually wants to hear the same things, as if not being annoyed, but praised. So this comes from nowhere else but from not doing what is said; for that reason the speaker is also burdensome. If someone, tell me, gives alms, and then another speaks about almsgiving, not only is he not weary of hearing, but he is also delighted, hearing his own good deeds spoken of and proclaimed. So also we, since we have nothing in common with forbearance, nor has this been achieved by us, for this reason we seem to be displeased even with the words; but if the deeds were present, words would not have grieved us. If, therefore, you do not want us to be burdensome or offensive, do this: show the matter by your works; for we will never cease speaking to you about the same things, until it is achieved in you. For we do this first of all out of care and affection for you; and then also because of the danger that hangs over us. For the one who sounds the trumpet must sound it, even if no one goes out to war, thus fulfilling his own duty. Therefore, we do not do this wanting to work a greater punishment for you, but to acquit ourselves of our responsibility. And along with this, your love also constrains us; for our bowels are torn and we are bitten, if any such thing should happen. But may it not be. It is not a matter of expense, as we just said, it is not a matter of financial loss, it is not a matter of a long journey; one only needs to be willing, it is a word, it is a choice. Let us guard our mouth, let us place a door and a bolt on it, so that we may utter nothing that is not pleasing to God. This is done for our own sake, not for the sake of those for whom we pray. Let us always consider this, that he who blesses his enemy, blesses himself, and he who curses, curses himself, and he who prays for his enemy, prays for himself, not for that one. If we do these things in this way, we shall be able to bring this good deed to completion, and to obtain the promised good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, power, honor, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. HOMILY 7. That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

1. If He wishes the common wars and battles and disturbances to be ended, and for this reason exhorts the priest to make prayers for kings and for rulers, much more ought private individuals 62.534 to do this. For there are three kinds of wars that are the most difficult: one is this common one, when our soldiers are warred against by barbarians; a second, when, even though there is peace, we war against one another; a third, when each one wars against himself. This, indeed, is the most difficult of all. ΟΜΙΛΙΑ Ζʹ. Ἵνα ἤρεμον καὶ ἡσύχιον βίον διάγωμεν ἐν πάσῃ εὐσεβείᾳ καὶ σεμνότητι. Τοῦτο γὰρ καλὸν καὶ ἀποδεκτὸν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Θεοῦ, ὃς πάντας ἀνθρώπους θέλει σωθῆναι, καὶ εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας ἐλθεῖν.

αʹ. Εἰ τοὺς κοινοὺς βούλεται λύεσθαι πολέμους καὶ τὰς μάχας καὶ τὰς ταραχὰς, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ὑπὲρ βασιλέων καὶ ὑπὲρ ἀρχόντων παρακαλεῖ τὸν ἱερωμένον εὐχὰς ποιεῖσθαι, πολλῷ μᾶλλον καὶ τοὺς ἰδιώτας 62.534 τοῦτο χρὴ ποιεῖν.
