Jesus Christ who died for us. Of the same. -Children of the light of truth, flee division and evil doctrines. But where the shepherd is, there follow as sheep. Of the same. -My witness, in whom I am bound, is that I did not know this from human flesh; but the Spirit proclaimed these things: Do nothing without the bishop. Keep your flesh as a temple of God, love unity, flee divisions; become imitators of Jesus Christ, as He is of His Father. From Saint Cyril, from the 17th book of "Against Julian." -It is necessary for the one who presides to study and practice a blameless life, and to have nothing unpracticed of the things that please God. From the same. -For those who have been allotted to lead, and are as it were set in the midst, and are more conspicuous than others, it is altogether necessary to be adorned with the beauty of a good life, and to practice a truly select life, so that they become a model for those placed under their hand, doing nothing for show or ambition, but striving to do their own things for the sake of profit and as an example for others. For the life of those in the midst and of note is always judged by all, and if it is tested and found blameless, this is not unprofitable to those who know him. But if he should be carried away from what is proper, and fall into things that are not lawful, it will not be for the good of some, but rather for loss and harm. For if the instructor does not know how to walk uprightly and live gracefully, what [benefit] will there be from him for those being instructed? From Saint Athanasius, from "On Courage." -It is necessary for the minister of the church to be above all without anger, and not to rebuke, but to exhort. Of Saint Dionysius of Alexandria. -Indeed, towards the disobedient and profane, we make the arguments of our discourse from external and common concepts and reasonings; but we try to establish ourselves and those who are of one mind from the divine oracles. From Didymus, from "On the Incorporeal." -Instructions and exhortations from a teacher accomplish the benefit of the hearers, not when the instructor teaches by word alone, but also by action that is suitable and consistent with what is professed. Again, it is necessary for the genuine teacher to have a life suitable to the things legislated by him, so that his work may be in harmony with his word. 96.525 From the twelfth chapter on Isaiah. - "The Lord will give a word to those who preach the gospel with great power." And they preach the gospel with great power who offer not only syllables, but also demonstrate their power by a practical and contemplative life. From Saint Justin, the philosopher and martyr, from the "Hortatory Address to the Greeks." - It is impossible for those who have not first learned from those who know to either know truly great and divine things themselves, or to be able to teach others correctly. ELEMENT Z. TITLE 1. -Concerning seeking God. From Theotimus, bishop of Scythopolis, from "If you bring your gift." -It is necessary to know nothing besides God. Of the same. -One approaches God fittingly in this way, if he assigns everything to Him, from whom he has received everything, and the cares themselves, and for what they happen to be. From the same [Saint Cyril] from "On Virginity." -It is necessary to seek God with the whole heart; and to seek is to worship Him, and to accomplish what seems good to Him is to be sought. For those who thus seek God, many are the fruits of piety, and the light from the Holy Spirit dawns. ELEMENT H. TITLE 4. -Concerning the last day, and the Antichrist. From Saint Irenaeus, on the coming beast. -A recapitulation of all iniquity takes place, etc. From Hippolytus, bishop of Rome, concerning Christ and the Antichrist. -But these things having been said in the preface for the glory of God, etc. to parade for Dionysus. ELEMENT TH. TITLE 7. -Concerning the divine oracles. From Theophilus, bishop of Alexandria. -It belongs to very few of those who have dedicated their entire life to the examination of the divine Scriptures to be able to follow the contained doctrines more rationally, and the deeper meaning of the Scriptures. TITLE 8. -Concerning the divine mysteries and those according to Christ. From Irenaeus, from
