χ Now Josaphat, filled with great compunction at these things, was all in tears. And he said to the old man: You have made all things clear to me, and have surely recounted this dreadful and wondrous narrative. Since these things, then, are set before us, what must we do to escape the punishments prepared for sinners, and be deemed worthy of the joy of the righteous? And Barlaam answered: It is written that when Peter, who was called the chief of the apostles, was once teaching the people, they were cut to the heart, just as you are today, and, when they said, 'What shall we do?' Peter said to them: Repent, and be baptized every one of you for the remission of sins, and you will receive the gift of the 134 Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children and to all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call. Behold, then, He has also poured out His rich mercy upon you, and has called you, who were far from Him in mind and serving foreign things—not gods, but destructive demons and deaf and senseless carved images. Wherefore, before all else, draw near to Him who has called you, from whom you shall receive the true knowledge of things seen and unseen. But if, after being called, you are unwilling or delay, by the just judgment of God you will be cast out, being unwanted for being unwilling; for thus also the same apostle Peter spoke to one of the disciples. But I believe that you have both heard the call, and hearing it yet more clearly, you will take up the cross and follow the God and Master who calls you, who summons you from death to life and from darkness to light. For in truth, ignorance of God is darkness and death of the soul, and to serve idols to the destruction of all nature seems to me to be beyond insensibility and folly. To what shall I liken them, and what sort of image of their stupidity shall I present to you? But I will set before you an example told to me by a most wise man. For he said that the worshippers of idols are like a bird-catcher, who caught one of the smallest of sparrows; they call it a nightingale. And taking a knife to slaughter and eat it, the nightingale was given an articulate voice. And 136 it says to the bird-catcher: What profit is there for you, O man, in my slaughter? For you will not be able to fill your belly with me. But if you will free me from my bonds, I will give you three precepts, which if you keep you will be greatly benefited throughout your whole life. And he, amazed at its speech, promised that if he heard something new from it, he would quickly release it from captivity. And the nightingale, turning, says to the man: Never attempt to attain the unattainable, and do not regret a past deed, and never believe an unbelievable word. Keep these three precepts, and may it be well with you. And the man, admiring the conciseness and wisdom of the words, loosed it from its bonds and sent it forth into the air. The nightingale, therefore, wishing to learn if the man understood the power of the words spoken to him and if he had reaped any benefit, says to him while flying in the air: Alas for your folly, O man, what a treasure you have lost today! For in my entrails there is a pearl, exceeding in size an ostrich's egg. When the bird-catcher heard this, therefore, he was overcome with grief, regretting that that nightingale had escaped his hands; and, trying again to catch it, he said: Come to my house, and after treating you well, I will send you away with honor. But the nightingale said to him: Now I know you to be exceedingly foolish; for though you received what was said to you eagerly and heard it gladly, you have gained no benefit from them. I told you not to regret a past 138 deed; and behold

Οὓς τίνι ὁμοιώσω, καὶ ποταπήν σοι εἰκόνα τῆς τούτων ἀβελτηρίας παραστήσω; ἀλλά σοι παραθήσω ὑπόδειγμα παρά τινος ἀνδρὸς σοφωτάτου λεχθὲν πρός με. Ἔλεγε γὰρ ὅτι Ὅμοιοί εἰσιν οἱ τῶν εἰδώλων προσκυνηταὶ ἀνθρώπῳ ἰξευτῇ, ὃς κατέσχεν ἓν τῶν σμικροτάτων στρουθίων· ἀηδόνα τοῦτο καλοῦσι. λαβὼν δὲ μάχαιραν τοῦ σφάξαι αὐτὸ καὶ φαγεῖν, ἐδόθη τῇ ἀηδόνι φωνὴ ἔναρθρος. καί 136 φησι πρὸς τὸν ἰξευτήν· Τί σοι ὄφελος, ἄνθρωπε, τῆς ἐμῆς σφαγῆς; οὐ δυνήσῃ γὰρ δι' ἐμοῦ τὴν σὴν ἐμπλῆσαι γαστέρα. ἀλλ' εἴ με τῶν δεσμῶν ἐλευθερώσεις, δώσω σοι ἐντολὰς τρεῖς, ἃς φυλάττων μεγάλα παρ' ὅλην σου τὴν ζωὴν ὠφεληθήσῃ. ὁ δέ, θαμβηθεὶς τῇ ταύτης λαλιᾷ, ἐπηγγείλατο, εἰ καινόν τι παρ' αὐτῆς ἀκούσειε, θᾶττον ἐλευθερῶσαι τῆς κατοχῆς. ἐπιστραφεῖσα δὲ ἡ ἀηδὼν λέγει τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ· Μηδέποτέ τινος τῶν ἀνεφίκτων ἐπιχειρήσῃς ἐφικέσθαι, καὶ μὴ μεταμελοῦ ἐπὶ πράγματι παρελθόντι, καὶ ἄπιστον ῥῆμα πώποτε μὴ πιστεύσῃς. ταύτας δὴ τὰς τρεῖς ἐντολὰς φύλαττε, καὶ εὖ σοι γένηται. ἀγάμενος δὲ ὁ ἀνὴρ τὸ εὐσύνοπτον καὶ συνετὸν τῶν ῥημάτων, λύσας αὐτὴν τῶν δεσμῶν κατὰ τοῦ ἀέρος ἐξαπέστειλεν. ἡ οὖν ἀηδὼν θέλουσα μαθεῖν εἰ ἐπέγνω ὁ ἀνὴρ τῶν λεχθέντων αὐτῷ ῥημάτων τὴν δύναμιν καὶ εἰ ἐκαρπώσατό τινα ὠφέλειαν, λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ἱπταμένη ἐν τῷ ἀέρι· Φεῦ σου τῆς ἀβουλίας, ἄνθρωπε, ὁποῖον θησαυρὸν σήμερον ἀπώλεσας· ὑπάρχει γὰρ ἐν τοῖς ἐγκάτοις μου μαργαρίτης, ὑπερέχων τῷ μεγέθει στρουθοκαμήλου ὠόν. ὡς οὖν ἤκουσε ταῦτα ὁ ἰξευτής, συνεχύθη τῇ λύπῃ μεταμελόμενος ὅτι ἐξέφυγεν ἡ ἀηδὼν ἐκείνη τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ· καί, πειρώμενος αὖθις κατασχεῖν αὐτήν, εἶπε· ∆εῦρο ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ μου, καί, φιλοφρονησάμενός σε καλῶς, ἐντίμως ἐξαποστελῶ. ἡ δὲ ἀηδὼν ἔφη αὐτῷ· Νῦν ἔγνων ἰσχυρῶς ἀνοηταίνειν σε· δεξάμενος γὰρ τὰ λεχθέντα σοι προθύμως καὶ ἡδέως ἀκούσας, οὐδεμίαν ἐξ αὐτῶν ὠφέλειαν ἐπεκτήσω. εἶπόν σοι μὴ μεταμελεῖσθαι ἐπὶ πράγματι παρελ 138 θόντι· καὶ ἰδοὺ
