saying to her, "We do not dare to meet them; for we know their drunkenness and their recklessness. 31.3 But if you will have mercy both on the whole village and on your own house, go out yourself and meet them." She, not agreeing to this, went up to her own little room at night and stood praying constantly without bending her knee, and beseeching God, "Lord, who judges the earth, with whom none of the unjust things is pleasing, when this prayer comes to you, may your power nail them to the place where it may overtake them." 31.4 And about the first hour, at a distance of three miles, they were nailed to the spot and were not able to be moved; and it was revealed even to them that the hindrance had happened to them through her intercessions; and sending to the village they asked for peace, declaring that, "Give thanks to God and to the prayers of Piamoun which have also fettered us." 32 .tConcerning Pachomius and the Tabennesiotes 32.1 Tabennisi is a place in the Thebaid so called, in which a certain Pachomius lived, a man who had lived such an upright life as to be deemed worthy both of prophecies and of angelic visions. This man became exceedingly philanthropic and fond of his brothers. Therefore, as he was sitting in his cave, an angel appeared and said to him: "You have perfected what concerns yourself; therefore you sit in the cave to no purpose; come, go out and gather all the young monks and dwell with them, and according to the rule which I give you, so legislate for them." And he gave him a bronze tablet on which these things were written: 32.2 "You will permit each one to eat and drink according to his ability; and according to the abilities of those who eat, assign to them analogous tasks; and you shall neither forbid fasting nor eating. Thus, however, entrust the hard tasks to the stronger ones who also eat, and the light ones to the weaker and more ascetic ones. Make separate cells in the courtyard, and let three remain in each cell. And let the food of all be provided for under one house. 32.3 Let them sleep not reclining, but having made built-up chairs that are rather sloping, and having placed their bedding there, let them sleep sitting up. At night let them wear linen tunics, girded. Let each of them have a tanned goatskin, without which they may not eat. But when they go to communion on Saturday and Sunday, let them loosen their belts, let them take off the goatskin, and let them enter with only the hood." And he prescribed for them hoods without wool like those of children, on which he also ordered a brand in the form of a cross to be placed in purple. 32.4 And he commanded that there be twenty-four orders and to each order he assigned a Greek letter, from alpha and beta and gamma and delta and those that follow. Therefore when he questioned and inquired about so great a number, the superior would ask the second-in-command: "How is the order of alpha?" or, "How is the order of zeta?" again, "Greet the order of rho," following a certain private code of letters. "And to the simpler and more sincere you will assign the iota, but to the more difficult and crooked you will assign the xi." 32.5 And so, in proportion to the state of their intentions and their characters and their lives, he applied the letter to each order, with only the spiritual ones knowing the meanings. And it was written on the tablet that "A stranger from another monastery having a different rule shall not eat with them, nor drink with them, nor enter the monastery unless he be found on a journey." However, one who has come in to remain with them they do not receive into the inner sanctuary for a period of three years; but after he has done more laborious tasks, he thus enters after three years. 32.6 "While eating, let them cover their heads with their hoods so that a brother may not see another brother chewing. It is not permitted to speak while eating, nor to fix one's eye anywhere outside the plate or the table." He prescribed that they should say twelve prayers throughout the day, and twelve at lamp-lighting, and twelve during the all-night vigils, and three at the ninth hour; but when the multitude is about to eat, he prescribed that a psalm be sung before each prayer. 32.7 But when Pachomius was objecting to the

Καθεζομένῳ οὖν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ ὤφθη ἄγγελος καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· "Τὰ κατὰ σαυτὸν κατώρ θωσας· περιττῶς οὖν καθέζῃ ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ· δεῦρο καὶ ἐξελθὼν συνάγαγε πάντας τοὺς νέους μοναχοὺς καὶ οἴκη σον μετ' αὐτῶν, καὶ κατὰ τὸν τύπον ὃν δίδωμί σοι οὕτως αὐτοῖς νομοθέτησον". Καὶ ἐπέδωκεν αὐτῷ δέλτον χαλκῆν ἐν ᾗ ἐγέγραπτο ταῦτα· 32.2 "Συγχωρήσεις ἑκάστῳ κατὰ δύναμιν φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν· καὶ πρὸς τὰς δυνάμεις τῶν ἐσθιόντων ἀνάλογα καὶ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῖς ἐγχείρισον· καὶ μήτε νηστεῦσαι κωλύσῃς μήτε φαγεῖν. Οὕτω μέντοι τὰ ἰσχυρὰ τοῖς ἰσχυροτέροις καὶ ἐσθίουσι, καὶ τὰ ἄτονα τοῖς ἀτονωτέροις καὶ ἀσκη τικωτέροις ἐγχείριζε ἔργα. Ποίησον δὲ κέλλας διαφόρους ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ, καὶ τρεῖς κατὰ κέλλαν μενέτωσαν. Ἡ δὲ τροφὴ πάντων ὑπὸ ἕνα οἶκον ἐξεταζέσθω. 32.3 Καθευδέτωσαν δὲ μὴ ἀνακείμενοι, ἀλλὰ θρόνους οἰκοδομητοὺς ὑπτιωτέρους πεποιηκότες καὶ θέντες αὐτῶν ἐκεῖ τὰ στρώματα καθευ δέτωσαν καθήμενοι. Φορείτωσαν δὲ ἐν ταῖς νυξὶ λεβιτῶνας λινοῦς ἐζωσμένοι. Ἕκαστος αὐτῶν ἐχέτω μηλωτὴν αἰγείαν εἰργασμένην, ἧς ἄνευ μὴ ἐσθιέτωσαν. Ἀπιόντες δὲ εἰς τὴν κοινωνίαν κατὰ σάββατον καὶ κυριακὴν τὰς ζώνας λυέτω σαν, τὴν μηλωτὴν ἀποτιθέσθωσαν, καὶ μετὰ κουκουλίου μόνου εἰσιέτωσαν". Κουκούλια δὲ αὐτοῖς ἐτύπωσεν ἄμαλλα ὡς παιδίοις, ἐν οἷς καὶ καυτῆρα τύπον σταυροῦ διὰ πορ φυρίου ἐκέλευσεν ἐντίθεσθαι. 32.4 Ἐκέλευσε δὲ εἰκοσι τέσσαρα τάγματα εἶναι καὶ ἑκάστῳ τάγματι ἐπέθηκε στοι χεῖον ἑλληνικὸν ἀπὸ ἄλφα καὶ βῆτα καὶ γάμμα καὶ δέλτα καὶ τῶν καθ' ἑξῆς. Ἐν τῷ οὖν αὐτὸν ἐρωτᾶν καὶ φιλο πραγμονεῖν εἰς τοσοῦτον πλῆθος ἠρώτα τὸν δεύτερον ὁ μει ζότερος· "Πῶς ἔχει τὸ τάγμα τοῦ ἄλφα;" ἤ· "Πῶς ἔχει τὸ ζῆτα;" πάλιν· "Ἄσπασαι τὸ ῥῶ", ἰδίῳ τινὶ σημείῳ γραμμάτων ἀκολουθοῦντες. "Καὶ τοῖς μὲν ἁπλουστέροις καὶ ἀκεραι οτέροις ἐπιθήσεις τὸ ἰῶτα, τοῖς δὲ δυσχερεστέροις καὶ σκολιωτέροις προσάξεις τὸ ξῖ". 32.5 Καὶ οὕτως κατ' ἀναλογίαν τῆς καταστάσεως τῶν προαιρέσεων καὶ τῶν τρόπων καὶ τῶν βίων, ἑκάστῳ τάγματι τὸ στοιχεῖον ἐφήρ μοσε, μόνων τῶν πνευματικῶν εἰδότων τὰ σημαινόμενα. Ἐγέγραπτο δὲ ἐν τῇ δέλτῳ ὅτι "Ξένος ἄλλου μοναστη ρίου ἄλλον ἔχοντος τύπον μὴ συμφάγῃ τούτοις, μὴ συμπίῃ, μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς τὴν μονὴν ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ ἐν ὁδῷ εὑρεθῇ". Τὸν μέντοι εἰσελθόντα συμμεῖναι αὐτοῖς ἐπὶ τριετίαν εἴσω τῶν ἀδύτων οὐ δέχονται· ἀλλ' ἐργατικώτερα ἔργα ποιήσας, οὕτως εἰσβαίνει μετὰ τριετίαν. 32.6 "Ἐσθίοντες δὲ τὰς κεφαλὰς καλυπτέτωσαν τοῖς κουκουλίοις ἵνα μὴ ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὸν μασώμενον ἴδῃ. Οὐκ ἔστι λαλῆσαι ἐσθίοντα, οὐδὲ ἐκτὸς τοῦ πίνακος ἢ τῆς τραπέζης ἀλλαχοῦ προσέχειν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ". Ἐτύπωσε δὲ διὰ πάσης τῆς ἡμέρας ποιεῖν αὐτοὺς εὐχὰς δώδεκα, καὶ ἐν τῷ λυχνικῷ δώδεκα, καὶ ἐν ταῖς παννυχίσι δώδεκα, καὶ ἐννάτην ὥραν τρεῖς· ὅτε δὲ μέλλει τὸ πλῆθος ἐσθίειν ἑκάστῃ εὐχῇ ψαλμὸν προᾴ δεσθαι τυπώσας. 32.7 Προσαντιλέγοντος δὲ τοῦ Παχωμίου τῷ
