I have encountered; I wonder who I have met today? This man speaks about having no possessions, he teaches that no one should have anything; perhaps he wants me to sell my boat too, so that I may distribute it to the poor. Do I expect to receive a wage from this man? Then approaching the Lord, he says: Your words are good, and your voice 63.604 is sweet, and your teaching is honorable; but nevertheless, pay me the wages for my trouble. And the Lord to Simon: You seek to receive a wage from me; put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch. But Simon to the Lord: Shall I fish again, and let down the nets, and endure the toil? if only I had not groped through the night with empty hands. Are you more skilled than I in seamanship? or do you possess something in the unseen depths? you can be a teacher; but are you also a hunter of fish? depart from me; for I see you carrying nothing. Why do I waste my time? Did I not protest these things to you from the beginning? But the Lord said to Simon: Do not regard me as helpless, Simon; do not look at my hands and my bosom; I carry your wage not in my hands, but in my mouth. Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch. But he to him: Master, we have toiled all the night and have taken nothing; nevertheless at your word I will let down the nets. And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish; and their nets were breaking. O the wondrous deeds! Peter is not lacking in care. The net was breaking, and he was looking around at Christ, and he was observing the fish, and he was considering the miracle. He was not strong enough to haul in the load, and he called for helpers. For running together, it says, those of the other boat also, where James and John were, began to gather the fish, and as many as they gathered, so many they multiplied. For the fish were hastening as to who would first serve the master's command; the small ones outran the large ones, the medium ones swam past the larger ones, the large ones leaped over the small ones; they did not wait for the hands of the fishermen, but tumbled themselves into the boat. The bottom of the lake was emptied; none of the fish endured to remain below, but while the nets were breaking, some tumbled themselves into the boat, while others stood around outside the nets, gaping to be caught, and not enduring to remain far from them. What then of Simon? He who had encountered two things, he who had toiled through the night and caught nothing, and in the day at the word of Jesus had caught everything, when he saw these things, he fell down before the Lord, saying, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man; I know now who you are. I have never seen such a catch of fish. For it is the custom, Master, for the fish to be enclosed within the dragnet; but I see the opposite miracle happening; from the outside the fish hold onto the dragnet. Restrain therefore your divine command, leave in the lake at least two fish for breeding. Depart from me, Master; I am not pushing you away, but I call myself wretched; Depart from me, for I am a sinful man. What then did Jesus do? Do not be afraid, Peter; from now on you will be catching men. O the power of the Lord! O the understanding of Peter! he only heard, and immediately he obeyed. He did not sell the fish, he did not give instructions to his wife, but having brought the boat to the land, he left everything and followed him. For this reason also the rich man saw Lazarus in the bosom of Abraham, so that just as for that one, lying at the gate of the 63.605 rich man and seeing another's goods made the torment more grievous, so indeed now for this one, lying in Gehenna, seeing the comfort of Lazarus might make the punishment more grievous; so that he might have his punishment more unbearable not only by the nature of the torments, but also by the comparison with that one's honor. And just as God, having cast Adam out of paradise, settled him opposite paradise, so that the continuous sight, renewing the suffering, might give him a more acute sense of his fall from good things; so indeed he also settled this one opposite Lazarus, so that he might know from what good things he himself

Παρὰ τούτου μισθὸν προσδοκῶ λαβεῖν; Εἶτα προσελθὼν τῷ Κυρίῳ, φησί· Τὰ μὲν ῥήματά σου καλὰ, καὶ ἡ φωνή 63.604 σου ἡδεῖα, καὶ ἡ διδασκαλία σου τιμία· ἀλλ' ὅμως ἐμοὶ τὸ τῆς συντάξεως πλήρωσον. Καὶ ὁ Κύριος πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα· Μισθὸν λαβεῖν ἐπιζητεῖς παρ' ἐμοῦ· ἐπανάγαγε εἰς τὸ βάθος, καὶ χαλάσατε τὰ δίκτυα ὑμῶν εἰς ἄγραν. Ὁ δὲ Σίμων πρὸς τὸν Κύριον· Πάλιν ἁλιεύσω, καὶ δίκτυα χαλάσω, καὶ κόπον ὑπομείνω; εἴθε μὴ τὴν νύκτα κεναῖς ταῖς χερσὶν ἐψηλάφησα. Μὴ γὰρ τεχνικώτερος εἶ τῆς ἐμῆς ναυτιλίας· ἢ κέκτησαί τι ἐν τῷ ἀφανεῖ βυθῷ; δύνῃ διδάσκαλος εἶναι· μὴ γὰρ καὶ ἰχθύων θηρευτής; ἔξελθε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ· βλέπω γάρ σε μηδὲν βαστάζοντα. Τί τὸν καιρὸν ἀπολλύω; οὐ ταῦτα παρὰ τὴν ἀρχὴν ἐμαρτυράμην σοι; Ὁ δὲ Κύριος πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα ἔφη· Μὴ ὡς ἄπορόν με πρόσεχε, Σίμων· μὴ τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τὸν κόλπον μου κατανόει· οὐκ ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν, ἀλλὰ ἐν τῷ στόματί μου τὸν μισθόν σου βαστάζω. Ἐπανάγαγε εἰς τὸ βάθος, καὶ χαλάσατε τὰ δίκτυα ὑμῶν εἰς ἄγραν. Ὁ δὲ πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἐπιστάτα, δι' ὅλης τῆς νυκτὸς κοπιάσαντες οὐδὲν ἐλάβομεν· ἐπὶ δὲ τῷ ῥήματί σου χαλάσω τὰ δίκτυα. Καὶ τοῦτο ποιήσαντες συνέκλεισαν πλῆθος ἰχθύων πολύ· διεῤῥήγνυτο δὲ τὰ δίκτυα αὐτῶν. Ὢ τῶν παραδόξων πραγμάτων! οὐ λείπει τῷ Πέτρῳ φροντίς. ∆ιεῤῥήγνυτο τὸ δίκτυον, καὶ τὸν Χριστὸν περιεβλέπετο, καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας κατενόει, καὶ τὸ θαῦμα ἐνενόει. Οὐκ ἴσχυε τὸν φόρτον ἑλκύσαι, καὶ βοηθοὺς ἐπεσπᾶτο. Συνδραμόντες γὰρ, φησὶ, καὶ οἱ τοῦ ἑτέρου πλοίου, ἔνθα ἦν Ἰάκωβος, καὶ Ἰωάννης, ἤρξαντο τοὺς ἰχθύας συλλέγειν, καὶ ὅσον συνῆγον, τοσοῦτον ἐπληθύνοντο. Ἔσπευδον γὰρ οἱ ἰχθύες τίς πρῶτος ὑπουργήσει τῷ δεσποτικῷ προστάγματι· οἱ μικροὶ τοὺς μεγάλους παρέτρεχον, οἱ μέσοι τοὺς μείζονας ὑπερεπλεύριζον, οἱ μεγάλοι τοὺς μικροὺς ὑπερήλαντο· τὰς χεῖρας τῶν ἁλιέων οὐ περιέμενον, ἀλλ' ἑαυτοὺς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκυβίστευον. Ὁ πυθμὴν τῆς λίμνης ἐκεκένωτο· οὐδεὶς τῶν ἰχθύων κάτω μένειν ἠνείχετο, ἀλλὰ τῶν δικτύων διαῤῥηγνυμένων, οἱ μὲν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἑαυτοὺς ἐκυβίστευον, οἱ δὲ ἔξωθεν τῶν δικτύων περιεστήκασι πρὸς τὸ θηραθῆναι κεχηνότες, καὶ πόῤῥω τούτων μένειν οὐκ ἀνεχόμενοι. Τί οὖν ὁ Σίμων; Ὁ δυσὶ πράγμασι περιπεσὼν, ὁ τὴν νύκτα κοπιάσας, καὶ μηδὲν πιάσας, καὶ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐπὶ τῷ ῥήματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ πάντα θηρεύσας, ὡς εἶδε ταῦτα, προσέπεσε τῷ Κυρίῳ λέγων, Ἔξελθε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, Κύριε, ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἁμαρτωλός εἰμι· ἔγνων λοιπὸν ὅστις εἶ. Οὐκ εἶδον ἰχθύων ἄγραν ποτὲ τοιαύτην. Ἔθος γὰρ, ∆έσποτα, τοὺς ἰχθύας τῆς σαγήνης ἔνδον ἀποκλείεσθαι· τοὐναντίον δὲ βλέπω γενόμενον θαῦμα· ἔξωθεν οἱ ἰχθύες τὴν σαγήνην κρατοῦσιν. Ἔπεχε λοιπὸν τὸ θεϊκόν σου τὸ πρόσταγμα, κατάλιπε τῇ λίμνῃ κἂν δύο πρὸς γονὴν ἰχθύας. Ἔξελθε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, ∆έσποτα· οὐ σὲ ἀπωθοῦμαι, ἀλλ' ἐμαυτὸν ταλανίζω· Ἔξελθε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἁμαρτωλός εἰμι. Τί οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς; Μὴ φοβοῦ, Πέτρε· ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀνθρώπους ἔσῃ ζωγρῶν. Ὢ τῆς τοῦ Κυρίου δυνάμεως! ὢ τῆς τοῦ Πέτρου συνέσεως! μόνον ἤκουσε, καὶ εὐθέως ὑπήκουσεν. Οὐ τοὺς ἰχθύας ἐπώλησεν, οὐ τῇ γυναικὶ συνετάξατο, ἀλλὰ καταγαγὼν τὸ πλοῖον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, ἀφεὶς ἅπαντα ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο δὲ καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἐν τοῖς κόλποις ὄντα τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ ἑώρα ὁ πλούσιος, ἵνα ὥσπερ ἐκείνῳ χαλεπωτέραν ἐποιεῖτο τὴν βάσανον τὸ ἐν τῷ πυλῶνι τοῦ 63.605 πλουσίου κεῖσθαι, καὶ ὁρᾷν τὰ ἀλλότρια ἀγαθὰ, οὕτω δὴ καὶ τούτῳ χαλεπωτέραν ποιῆται νῦν τὴν τιμωρίαν τοῦ ἐν τῇ γεέννῃ κεῖσθαι τὸ ὁρᾷν τοῦ Λαζάρου τὴν τρυφήν· ἵνα μὴ τῇ φύσει τῶν βασάνων μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῇ παραθέσει τῆς ἐκείνου τιμῆς, ἀφορητοτέραν ἔχῃ τὴν κόλασιν. Καὶ καθάπερ τὸν Ἀδὰμ ἐκβαλὼν τοῦ παραδείσου, κατέναντι τοῦ παραδείσου κατῴκισεν ὁ Θεὸς, ἵνα ἡ συνεχὴς ὄψις ἀνανεοῦσα τὸ πάθος ἀκριβέστερον αὐτῷ παράσχῃ τῆς ἐκπτώσεως τῶν ἀγαθῶν τὴν αἴσθησιν· οὕτω δὴ καὶ τοῦτον κατέναντι τοῦ Λαζάρου κατῴκισεν, ἵνα εἰδῇ τίνων ἀγαθῶν ἑαυτὸν
