always, nor for an endless age. And let no one tell me that he speaks of a short time. For what is, It shall not pass away? nor shall it be given to another people? And see the things concerning Darius and the Macedonians. For what reason are these things? Because of the Jews. For this reason Alexander also worshiped at the temple, as they say, having seen this book; and the Greeks marveled at the power of his prophecy. Concerning these things no one spoke, but he alone.

CHAPTER 8.

In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, I Daniel,

after that which appeared to me at the beginning. And I saw in the vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was in Susa the palace, which is in the country of Elam. And I saw in a vision, and I was on the Ubal. And I lifted up my eyes, and saw; and behold, a ram stood before the Ubal; and he had horns, and the horns were high; and the one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last. And I saw the ram butting westward, and northward, and southward, and southwestward; and all the beasts shall not stand before him, and there was no one who could deliver out of his hand; and he did according to his will, and became great. And I was considering; and behold, a he-goat came from the southwest over the face of the whole earth; and he was not touching the ground; and that goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes. And the goat came up to the ram that had the horns, which I had seen standing before the Ubal; and he ran at him with the fury of his strength. And I saw him reach the ram, and he was enraged at him, and he struck the ram, and broke both of his horns; and there was no strength in the ram to stand before him. And he cast him upon the ground, and trampled him, and there was no one to deliver the ram from his hand. And the he-goat became exceedingly great. And when he had become strong, his great horn was broken; and four horns rose up from under it toward the four winds of 56.235 heaven. And out of one of them came forth one strong horn, and it grew exceedingly great toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the west. And it grew great, even to the host of heaven; and there fell to the earth some of the host of heaven, and of the stars, and it trampled them. And it was established even up to the prince of the host; and because of him the sacrifice was disturbed, and it happened, and it prospered for him. And the sanctuary will be made desolate; and sin was given against the sacrifice, and righteousness was cast to the ground. And he acted, and prospered. And I heard one saint speaking, and one saint said to the certain one who was speaking: For how long shall the vision stand, and the sacrifice that was taken away, and the sin of desolation that was given, and the sanctuary, and the host be trampled? And he said to him: Until evening and morning, two thousand and three hundred days, and the sanctuary shall be cleansed. And it came to pass when I, Daniel, saw the vision, seeking (l. and I was seeking) understanding. And behold, one stood before me. And an appearance (l. of me, as an app.) of a man between the Ubal. And he called out, and said: Gabriel, make that one understand the vision. And he came, and stood near (l. standing near) my standing-place. And when he came, I was terrified, and I fall upon my face. And he said to me: Understand, son of man; for the vision is yet for the end of time. And as he was speaking with me, I fall upon my face to the ground; and he touched me, and set me on my feet. And he said: Behold, I am making known to you the things that shall be at the last of the indignation; for it is yet for the end of time. The ram which you saw, that has the horns, is the king of the Medes and Persians. And the he-goat is the king of the Greeks. And the great horn, which was between his eyes, he is the first king. And that it was broken, and four horns rose up under it, four kings shall arise from his nation, and not in the strength
