to rejoice and pray without ceasing, but also to acquire a heart pure from all sorts of passions and evil thoughts in order to see God, how will he ever say it is possible for corruptible men to achieve? By no means; and thus it will happen to you to be numbered with the unbelievers and not the faithful. For if God both said and says and proclaims daily all these things as possible to be accomplished by us, but you contradict Him, saying they are impossible for us and not possible, you are in no way different from the unbelievers.

Do you wish, then, never to commune without tears? Do what is sung and read by you daily, and then you will be able to accomplish this too without ceasing. What are these things? And are you completely ignorant? Hear the one who says: "For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law will be justified". But that we may not prolong the discourse, I say these very things to you, I will recall the words of David (78): "If I go up," he says, "to the bed of my couch, if I give sleep to my eyes and slumber to my eyelids and rest to my temples, until I find a place for the Lord, a tabernacle for the God of Jacob", and again: "There is no peace in my bones because of my sins, for my iniquities have gone over my head, like a heavy burden they have weighed down on me. My wounds have become foul and are corrupt because of my foolishness. I was miserable and bowed down to the end, I went about mourning all the day. I was afflicted and humbled exceedingly, I roared from the groaning of my heart and I became like a sparrow alone on a housetop, I became like a pelican of the wilderness, because I ate ashes like bread and mingled my drink with weeping. I have grown weary with my groaning, every night I will wash my bed, every day I will wash my bed, I will drench my couch". And Saint John of the Ladder also says: "Thirst and vigil have afflicted a heart; and when a heart is afflicted, waters have gushed forth". And how many other things he discusses with us concerning these matters, he who wishes to look into the book itself will learn.

If, therefore, you too shall practice these things which you chant and read every day, or hear others reading, unceasingly with your whole heart with humility and faith, amen I bring you good tidings of great joy, that if you persevere in doing these things, thirsting, keeping vigil, being submissive until death and obeying without distinction and without hypocrisy your superior, (79) enduring also every affliction and insult and reviling and slander, and not only that but also scourgings and torments from your lowliest brethren, being disposed with all thanksgiving, without bearing malice toward them and praying for them, rejoice and exult with inexpressible joy, because not only at evening and morning and midday, but also while you are eating and drinking and often conversing, chanting and reading and praying and lying upon your bed, this divine and inexpressible gift, coming, will pursue you all the days of your life and will accompany you on the way and will lodge with you when you lodge and will serve with you when you serve, comforting and consoling the pains of your labor. And then you will know how very fittingly and well Saint Symeon said that one should not commune without tears, and how this is possible and in truth suitable for all. For it was not he, but through him the Holy Spirit both spoke and wrote. For if no one is without sin, not even if his life is but one day, and no one is able to have a pure heart, it is manifest that a man ought to pass one single day in his whole life without repentance and tears; as much as it is up to him. For even if he does not have tears, yet at least he ought to seek them with all his strength
