a different kind of servant, she did not forget her former mastership; but she preserved her goodwill in misfortune, and after the service of their common masters, she served the one considered her fellow slave, washing her feet, taking care of her bedding, and likewise attending to her other needs. This became known to those who had bought them. From this, both her freedom and the servant's good character were rumored throughout the city. When the most faithful soldiers stationed among us learned these things—for I was away at the time—, they both paid the price to the buyers and snatched her from slavery. But I, after my return, having been taught both the drama of her misfortune and the praiseworthy desire of the soldiers, prayed for good things for them, and entrusted the most noble maiden to one of the most devout deacons, guaranteeing that a sufficient allowance of food be supplied. But when ten months had passed, learning that her father was still alive and held office in the West, she naturally desired to return to him; and when some had said that very many merchants from the West were landing for the festival now being held among you, she asked to make the journey with a letter from me. For this reason I have written this letter, urging your God-fearing self to take care of a noble offspring, and to command one of those adorned with piety, to speak with ship-owners and pilots and merchants, and to hand her over to faithful men, able to restore her to her father. For certainly they will gain very many things beyond all human expectation by bringing the child to her father. 71 TO ZENO, GENERAL AND CONSUL. All men admire your courage, as it is mingled with civility and meekness, and you conduct yourself gently toward your own people, but bravely toward your enemies. And these things show the praiseworthy general. For courage adorns a soldier, but prudence adorns a general before courage; and with these, temperance and justice, through which the wealth of virtue is gathered. And the soul that longs for good things collects this; and it considers toil most sweet, looking toward the sweetness of the fruits. For to the athletes of virtue the God of all has set forth prizes like some ambitious judge of the games, some in this life, and others in that which has no end. Your greatness has indeed enjoyed the things here, and has received the highest honor; and may your magnanimity also obtain those permanent and lasting good things, and with the consular robe, receive in addition the ineffable and divine vestment. For this is the common prayer of all who know the magnitude of that gift. 72 TO HERMESIGENES THE ASSESSOR. When the darkness of ignorance was poured over men, not everyone celebrated the same feasts, but they had their festivals divided city by city. For in Elis there were the Olympic games, in Delphi the Pythian, in Sparta the Hyacinthia, and in Athens the Panathenaea and the Thesmophoria and the Dionysia. And they were famous; and different people celebrated the public feasts of different demons. But when the spiritual light scattered that mist, everywhere on land and sea, continent-dwellers and islanders in common celebrate the feasts of our God and Savior; and wherever someone might wish to travel, whether toward the rising sun, or toward the setting, everywhere he will find the same festival being celebrated at the same time. For not even according to the law of Moses, which befitted the weakness of the Jews, is it necessary to come together into one city, and of the benefits

Τοῦτο τοῖς πριαμένοις ἐγένετο γνώριμον. Ἐντεῦθεν ἐθρυλήθη κατὰ τὴν πόλιν ἥ τε ταύτης ἐλευθερία καὶ τῆς θεραπαίνης ἡ εὐτροπία. Ταῦτα μεμαθηκότες οἱ παρ' ἡμῖν ἱδρυμένοι πιστότατοι στρατιῶται -ἐγὼ γὰρ τηνικαῦτα ἀπῆν-, καὶ τοῖς πριαμένοις ἀπέδοσαν τὴν τιμὴν καὶ ταύτην τῆς δουλείας ἐξήρπασαν. Πάντως γὰρ ὅτι πάμπολλα κερδανοῦσι παρὰ πᾶσαν ἀνθρωπίνην ἐλπίδα τῷ πατρὶ τὴν παῖδα προσ άγοντες. 71 ΖΗΝΩΝΙ ΣΤΡΑΤΗΓΩ ΚΑΙ ΥΠΑΤΩ. Τὴν ὑμετέραν ἀνδρείαν θαυμάζουσιν ἅπαντες, ὡς ἡμερότητι καὶ πραότητι κεκραμένην, καὶ τοῖς μὲν οἰκείοις ἠπίως, τοῖς δὲ πολεμίοις ἀνδρείως προσφερομένην. Τὸν ἀξιέπαινον δὲ ταῦτα δείκνυσι στρατηγόν. Στρατιώτην μὲν γὰρ ἡ ἀνδρεία κοσμεῖ, τὸν δὲ στρατηγὸν πρὸ τῆς ἀνδρείας ἡ φρόνησις· καὶ μετὰ τούτων σωφροσύνη καὶ δικαιοσύνη, δι' ὧν ὁ τῆς ἀρετῆς συναθροίζεται πλοῦτος. Συλλέγει δὲ τοῦτον ἡ τῶν ἀγαθῶν ὀρεγομένη ψυχή· καὶ ἥδιστον ἡγεῖται τὸν πόνον, εἰς τὸ γλυκὺ τῶν καρπῶν ἀποβλέπουσα. Τοῖς γὰρ τῆς ἀρετῆς ἀθληταῖς ἆθλα προτέθεικεν οἷά τις ἀγωνοθέτης φιλότιμος ὁ τῶν ὅλων Θεός, τὰ μὲν ἐν τῷδε τῷ βίῳ, τὰ δὲ ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ πέρας οὐκ ἔχοντι. Τῶν τῇδε μὲν οὖν τὸ ὑμέτερον ἀπέλαυσε μέγεθος, καὶ τὸ ἀκρότατον ἐδέξατο γέρας· εἴη δὲ καὶ τῶν μονίμων ἐκείνων καὶ διαρκῶν τὴν ὑμετέραν μεγαλοφυΐαν τυχεῖν ἀγαθῶν, καὶ μετὰ τῆς ὑπατικῆς ἀμπεχόνης προσλαβεῖν τὴν ἄρρητον καὶ θείαν περιβολήν. Κοινὴ γὰρ πάντων εὐχὴ τῶν ἐκείνης τῆς δωρεᾶς ἐπισταμένων τὸ μέγεθος. 72 ΕΡΜΕΣΙΓΕΝΕΙ ΠΑΡΕ∆ΡΩ. Ἡνίκα τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὁ τῆς ἀγνοίας κατεκέχυτο ζόφος, οὐ τὰς αὐτὰς ἅπαντες ἑορτὰς ἐπετέλουν, ἀλλὰ διῃρημένας εἶχον κατὰ πόλεις τὰς πανηγύρεις. Ἐν Ἤλιδι μὲν γὰρ Ὀλύμπιαἦν, ἐν ∆ελφοῖς δὲ τὰ Πύθια, ἐν δέ γε τῇ Σπάρτῃ τὰ Ὑακίν θια, Ἀθήνῃσι δὲ τά τε Παναθήναια καὶ τὰ Θεσμοφόρια καὶ τὰ ∆ιονύσια. Ἐπίσημα δὲ ἦν· καὶ ἄλλοι δὲ ἄλλων ἐπετέλουν δημοθοινίαν δαιμόνων. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ τὸ νοερὸν φῶς τὴν ἀχλὺν ἐκείνην ἐσκέδασε, πανταχοῦ γῆς καὶ θαλάττης ἠπειρῶται καὶ νησιῶται κοινῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ἐπιτελοῦσι τὰς ἑορτάς· καὶ ἔνθα ἄν τις ἀποδημῆσαι θελήσῃ, κἂν πρὸς ἥλιον ἀνίσχοντα, κἂν πρὸς δυόμενον, πανταχοῦ τὴν αὐτὴν εὑρήσει κατὰ τὸν αὐτὸν χρόνον ἐπιτελουμένην πανήγυριν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ κατὰ τὸν Μωϋσέως νόμον, τὸν τῇ Ἰουδαίων ἀσθενείᾳ συμβαί νοντα, εἰς μίαν ἀνάγκη συνιέναι πόλιν, καὶ τῶν εὐεργεσιῶν
