by nature God, I know all things, I foretell the things to come, and so that you may believe that I am able to free you from the dangers that are brought upon you. 534 {3Jο 16, 2}3So great will be the madness of those who kill you—not only of Jews, but also of Gentiles and heretics—that they will consider it to be the power of a God-loving worship to slay you. 535 {3Jο 16, 4}3So that the things being said might not be obscured by time, I refrained from teaching the virtue according to piety. 536 {3Jο 16, 6}3Because of fear and grief they were beside themselves and fell silent. 537 {3Jο 16, 7}3If I do not suffer, the Spirit, the cause of every good gift, does not come upon you. 538 {3Jο 16, 8}3Such is the power of the coming of the Holy Spirit, that then will be revealed the sin of those who have transgressed against me. As many as did not believe in Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit remained in their own sins, as he who did not believe in the sinless one is condemned as a sinner. 539 {3Jο 16, 11}3He was condemned as having killed Christ, who was sinless, through the Jews, because making excuses he said that 'Adam did not die because of me, but because he sinned.' But since after the passion the healings come about through the Holy Spirit, the destruction of the devil is shown through the deeds. 540 {3Jο 16, 12}3As unrighteous is the one who did not believe in the righteous one who on account of his righteousness was taken up into the heavens and became invisible to men. As slothful, because with Satan having been broken, not even so did he wish to conquer him.

541 {3Jο 16, 12-13}3Instead of, He speaks in harmony with me; for the Spirit is not lacking; for being self-subsistent as consubstantial with the Father and the Son, He knows all things and has the power to do them from himself. 542 {3Jο 16, 13}3When the Spirit teaches you, then you will be able to depart from the legal types and to perform worship "in spirit and in truth."The Spirit is not greater than the Son, he says. Therefore he will speak nothing from himself, but what he hears; for what I say, he also will say.The Spirit will teach men the things of the Son's divinity and glory and equality with the Father. Not because of weakness does he not speak, but he said this because of the precise harmony of the Trinity. 543 {3Jο 16, 14}3Since the Son naturally has the things of the Father on account of being consubstantial, he said that the things of the Spirit are also his own, as the things of the Trinity are common. 544 {3Jο 16, 16}3So that he might not grieve the disciples, he did not say, "I am dying," but "you do not see me." 545 {3Jο 16, 18}3Because of grief they did not understand, and while they knew that he was going away, they did not know how he would come; for they were ignorant of the resurrection before the event. 546 {3Jο 16, 19-}3Since being greatly grieved they did not wish to hear about his death, wishing to impress this teaching upon them he said 'you will weep', after the grief there will be joy. 547 {3Jο 16, 21}3The reward of your grief will be joy, just as for the grief of the one in labor there is joy from the birth. Since <when> he died, it seemed to them that they went from grief to joy, he used the example of the woman giving birth. 548 {3Jο 16, 22}3Since you will be persuaded that as God I was raised and I die no more, even if I ascend into heaven with the flesh. 549 {3Jο 16, 25}3He speaks of the time of the resurrection. 550 {3Jο 16, 25}3For Christ speaks these things as in proverbs, as he says coming down; for it cannot be understood according to the letter. But he who asks for beneficial things for the betterment of souls, asks and receives. He calls a proverb the unclear and veiled word. Because of their infancy he speaks obscurely. But when you have advanced, then I will reveal to you the Father's glory. After the resurrection I will speak to you clearly about the Father. When you receive the Spirit, then you will receive clear knowledge about the Son and the Father. 551 {3Jο 16, 26}3He is able indeed as God to give, but as having already said 'I ask' economically as a man, he remained with the word. 552 {3Jο 16, 28}3From the essence, he says, I came forth from the Father, being undividedly in the Father and having the Father self-subsistently in myself. neither when he became man is he said to have come into the world having been left behind by the Father, nor when he was taken up with the flesh,
