Opsara 100 nomismata, the castron of Arbe 100 nomismata, the castron of Vekla 100 nomismata, so that altogether 710 nomismata apart from wine and other various species; for these are more valuable than the nomismata. But the castron of Ragusium lies between the two countries, of both Zachlumia and Terbounia; and they have their vineyards in both countries, and they pay to the prince of Zachlumia 30 nomismata, and to the prince of Terbounia 30 nomismata. 31 About the Croats and the country they now inhabit. That the Croats who now live in the parts of Dalmatia are descended from the unbaptized Croats, also called the white ones, who live beyond Turkey and next to Francia, and are neighbors to the Slavs, the unbaptized Serbs. And 'Chrobatoi' in the language of the Slavs is interpreted, that is, "those who possess much land". These same Croats came as refugees to the emperor of the Romans, Heraclius, before the Serbs took refuge with the same emperor, Heraclius, at the time when the Avars, having made war, drove out from there the Romani, whom the emperor Diocletian had brought from Rome and settled there, for which reason they were called Romani because they had become settlers from Rome in those lands, that is, of what is now called Croatia and Serbia. But these Romani having been driven out by the Avars in the days of the same emperor of the Romans, Heraclius, their lands were made desolate. Therefore, by the command of the emperor Heraclius, these same Croats, having defeated and driven out the Avars from there, by the command of the emperor Heraclius settled in that same land of the Avars, in which they now dwell. And these same Croats had at that time as prince the father of Porga. And the emperor Heraclius sent and brought priests from Rome, and from them made an archbishop and a bishop and presbyters and deacons, and baptized the Croats; and at that time these Croats had as prince Porga. That this land, in which the Croats settled, was from the beginning under the authority of the emperor of the Romans, whence also palaces and hippodromes of the emperor Diocletian are preserved to this day in the country of these same Croats in the castron of Salona, near the castron of Aspalathos. That these baptized Croats do not wish to make war on foreign lands outside their own country; for they received a certain oracle and decree from the Pope of Rome, who in the time of Heraclius, the emperor of the Romans, sent priests and baptized them. For these Croats after they were baptized made treaties and personal pledges and to Saint Peter the apostle firm and sure oaths, that they would never go into a foreign country and make war, but rather live in peace with all who were willing, having received from the same Pope of Rome a blessing of this sort, that if any other pagans should come against the country of these same Croats and bring war upon them, that the God of the Croats should fight for them and protect them, and Peter the disciple of Christ should procure victories for them. And after many years, in the days of Terpimer, the prince, the father of prince Crasimer, there came from Francia, which is between Croatia and Venice, a certain very devout man, Martin by name, but clad in secular habit, whom these same Croats say performed many miracles; and this devout man being weak and mutilated in his feet, so that he was carried by four men and borne about wherever he wished, ordained that these same Croats should keep this commandment of the most holy pope until the end of their lives, and he himself also prayed for them the same blessing of the pope. For this reason neither the sagenae of these Croats, nor their condurae ever go against anyone for war, unless perhaps someone against
