Eutyches therefore approaches Chrysaphius the eunuch, who held the same opinion as him and was most powerful with the emperor; and he persuades Theodosius to allow Dioscorus, who was administering the throne of Alexandria after the departure of the most holy Cyril, to come to Ephesus with other bishops and to examine the matters concerning Eutyches, with Flavian also being present. This Dioscorus, therefore, being of the same opinion as Eutyches and having taken other like-minded bishops, comes to Ephesus and ratifies the things introduced by Eutyches. But when the most holy Flavian spoke against it, like some wild ass, Dioscorus 108 leaping up, kicked that pious man in the chest and, striking him on the temple with his fist, did not let up until he pushed him out of the council. And the saint, after the third day, departed this life from the blow to the chest, having adorned the archiepiscopal throne of the newer Rome for two years. But Dioscorus forced the bishops present there to sign the definition set forth by him; for the power of the aforementioned eunuch caused armed soldiers to be present there and to intimidate those who spoke against it. But Domnus of Antioch also signed, having been carried away, then he cried out against Dioscorus and denounced the definition as full of impiety. Emperor Theodosius, having learned these things and having known what happened to Flavian, held Chrysaphius to blame and was angry. But Dioscorus, in fear, suggests to him to persuade the emperor to appoint as patriarch of Constantinople Anatolius his apocrisiarius, so that he might both receive Eutyches into communion and the matters concerning the blessed Flavian might remain uninvestigated. The eunuch therefore persuades the emperor, who was easily led, and Anatolius is ordained patriarch. 109 This aforementioned Chrysaphius, taking advantage of the ruler's pliability, persuaded him, and having taken the empress Eudocia as a collaborator, to remove Pulcheria from the administration of affairs. And she, having withdrawn from the palace, both lived by herself and lived quietly in the Hebdomon. But the emperor, having late and with difficulty come to his senses and having considered the bloody murder against the blessed Flavian and the things concerning Pulcheria, and having found that profane eunuch to be the cause of all things, is moved to a just anger against him and sentences him to exile and confiscates his property, and having recalled his sister, he asked for forgiveness and again entrusted the administration of affairs to her. Now Pulcheria was most wise, and of the many failings of her brother, some she corrected, and others she covered up. It is said, at least, that this emperor would sign documents without paying attention. And she would advise him not to ratify everything that was brought to him, but to examine what was written beforehand. But he would affirm that he was not being tricked by anyone; for he would insist that he himself knew what was being written. Therefore, for a refutation of her brother's sluggish 110 mind, something of this sort was devised by Pulcheria. She composes a document of sale from him, as if he had sold the Augusta Eudocia to her; and having brought the bill of sale to him as if it were something else, she persuaded him to ratify it with his own signature; then, when Eudocia was summoned by him, she did not allow her to go away. And when the emperor asked the reason, Pulcheria showed him the deed of sale and thus she proved to him that he signs many things which he neither knows nor, perhaps, wishes to happen. At that time, therefore, when that feigned sale had been nullified, the empress was restored to the emperor. But afterwards, when a certain occasion arose, the emperor rejected the Augusta; and the occasion was this: an apple extraordinary in size was brought to the emperor. And he, admiring this, sent it to the empress, and she gave the apple to Paulinus; (for the man was learned, and for this reason he was familiar with the empress). And he, amazed at the size of the apple and not knowing about it, brings this to the emperor. But he recognized what was brought and having hidden it, his wife

Τότε μὲν οὖν τῆς πεπλασμένης ἐκείνης πράσεως σχολασάσης, ἡ βασιλὶς ἀποκατέστη τῷ αὐτοκράτορι. μετέπειτα δ' αἰτίας συμβάσης τινός, ἀπέστερξε τὴν Αὐγούσταν ὁ βασιλεύς· ἡ δ' αἰτία· μῆλον ὑπερφυὲς εἰς ὄγκον ἐκομίσθη τῷ βασιλεῖ. ὁ δὲ τοῦτο θαυμάσας τῇ βασιλίδι ἀπέστειλε, κἀκείνη τῷ Παυλίνῳ τὸ μῆλον δέδωκεν· (ἦν δὲ λόγιος ὁ ἀνήρ, κἀντεῦθεν τῇ βασιλίσσῃ ᾠκείωτο). ὁ δὲ τὸ τοῦ μήλου μέγεθος ἀγασθεὶς καὶ ἀγνοῶν περὶ αὐτοῦ προσάγει τοῦτο τῷ βασιλεῖ. ἐκεῖνος δ' ἐπέγνω τὸ προσαχθὲν καὶ κρύψας αὐτὸ τὴν γυναῖκα
