both dry and moist, to represent the Ogdoad accurately; from which they enumerate ten powers thus: seven corporeal circular bodies, which they also call heavens; then the circle containing them, which they also name the eighth heaven; and in addition to these, both sun and moon. These, being ten in number, they say are images of the invisible Decad, which proceeded from Logos and Zoe. And that the Dodecad is indicated by the so-called zodiacal circle. For they say the twelve signs of the zodiac most clearly sketch out the Dodecad that is the daughter of Man and Ecclesia. And since, they say, it was counter-yoked to the most swift motion of the whole, of which is time H. And since, he says, the heaven above, weighing down upon the very vault, was yoked to the most swift upward motion of the whole, and counterbalances their swiftness with its own slowness, so that it completes its circuit from point to point in thirty years, they say it is an image of Horos who contains their Mother of thirty names. And again, the moon, containing her own heaven in thirty days, through the days impressing the number of the thirty Aeons. And the sun, contained in twelve months l. traversing, and finishing his circular restoration, through the twelve months makes manifest the twelfth H. Dodecad. The H. And the days themselves, having the measure of twelve hours, are a type of the luminous Dodecad. But indeed they also say the hour, the twelfth part of the day, is composed of thirty parts because of the image of the Triacontad. And that the perimeter of the zodiacal circle itself is three hundred and sixty degrees; for each sign has H. to have thirty degrees. And so they say that also through the circle the image of the connection of the twelve with the thirty has been preserved. Moreover, asserting also that the earth is divided into twelve zones, and that under each zone receiving a power from the heavens perpendicularly, bringing forth children resembling the power which sends down the emanation, they affirm this to be a most clear type of the Dodecad and its children. In addition to these things, they say the Demiurge wished to imitate the boundless, and eternal, and indefinite, and timeless nature of the Ogdoad above, and not being able to express its stability and perpetuity, because he was the fruit adde ex Η. of defect, its eternity was deposited into times, and seasons, and long series of years, thinking by the multitude of times to imitate its boundless nature. And here they say, since truth fled from him, falsehood followed; and for this reason his work will receive dissolution when the times are fulfilled. AND saying such things concerning the creation, every day each of them generates something newer, as he is able. For no one among them is perfect who has not produced great falsehoods. And as for the things from the prophetic writings which they transform, it is necessary, having indicated them, to bring the refutation against them. For Moses, they say, beginning his treatise on the creation, immediately in the beginning showed the mother of all things, saying: In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth. Having therefore named these four, God, and beginning, heaven, and earth, he formed their Tetrad, as they themselves say. And indicating her invisible and hidden nature, to have said: But the earth was invisible and unformed. They wish him to have spoken of the second Tetrad, the offspring of the first Tetrad, thus, naming abyss and darkness, and in themselves water, and the spirit borne upon the water. After which, making mention of the Decad, he speaks of light, and day, and night, and firmament, and evening, and what is called morning, and dry land and sea, and furthermore herb, and in the tenth place, wood; and thus through the ten names he has indicated the ten Aeons. And of the Duodecad, its power was thus represented by him; for he speaks of the sun. and moon, and stars and seasons, and years and

ΚΑΙ περὶ μὲν τῆς κτίσεως τοιαῦτα λέγοντες, καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν ἐπιγεννᾷ ἕκαστος αὐτῶν, καθὼς δύναται, καινότερον. Τέλειος γὰρ οὐδεὶς ὁ μὴ μεγάλα ψεύσματα παρ' αὐτοῖς καρποφορήσας. Ἐκ δὲ τῶν προφητικῶν ὅσα μεταμορφάζουσιν, ἀναγκαῖον μηνύσαντα τὸν ἔλεγχον αὐτοῖς ἐπάγειν. Ὁ γὰρ Μωϋσῆς, φασὶ, ἀρχόμενος τῆς κατὰ τὴν κτίσιν πραγματείας, εὐθὺς ἐν ἀρχῇ τὴν μητέρα τῶν ὅλων ἐπέδειξεν, εἰπών· Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν. Τέσσαρα οὖν ταῦτα ὀνομάσας, Θεὸν, καὶ ἀρχὴν, οὐρανὸν, καὶ γῆν, τὴν τετρακτὺν αὐτῶν, ὡς αὐτοὶ λέγουσι, διετύπωσε. Καὶ τὸν ἀόρατον δὲ καὶ τὸν ἀπόκρυφον αὐτῆς μηνύοντα εἰπεῖν· Ἡ δὲ γῆ ἦν ἀόρατος καὶ ἀκατασκεύαστος.
