Chapter 23
Difference and species have this in common: that they are participated in equally, and that they are always present in the things which participated in them. Distinguishing peculiarities of difference and species are these: that the difference is predicated of what sort something is, and the species of its difference; that the difference contains several species and their individuals, whereas the species contains only the individuals which come under itself; that the difference is prior by nature to the species; and that a difference may be combined with a difference, but a species with a species never.
{Κοινωνία καὶ διαφορὰ διαφορᾶς καὶ εἴδους.} Κοινὰ διαφορᾶς καὶ εἴδους: ὅτι ἐπίσης μετέχονται: ὅτι ἀεὶ πάρεισιν, οἷς μετέχονται. Ἴδια διαφορᾶς καὶ εἴδους: ὅτι ἡ μὲν διαφορὰ ἐν τῷ ποῖόν τί ἐστι, τὸ δὲ εἶδος ἐν τῷ τί ἐστι κατηγορεῖται: ὅτι ἡ διαφορὰ πλείονα εἴδη περιέχει καὶ τὰ τούτων ἄτομα, τὸ δὲ εἶδος μόνον τὰ ὑπ' αὐτὸ ἄτομα: ὅτι ἡ διαφορὰ φύσει προτέρα τῶν εἰδῶν: ὅτι διαφορὰ μετὰ διαφορᾶς συντίθεται, εἶδος δὲ μετὰ εἴδους οὐδαμῶς.
