he was left behind from the world; for he is God who fills all things. 553 {3Jο 16, 32}3The phrase "do you now believe," he says this in a more human way; for insofar as I am God, I am in God the Father naturally and without separation. He said this out of condescension, since the disciples wanted to hear this. 555 {3Jο 16, 33}3Christ was shown to be superior and more powerful than all worldly sin, and he gives to the faithful the ability to conquer. Or that Christ, having become one of us insofar as he is man, appeared superior to death and corruption, and the grace passes to us. And so we ought to be of good courage, that we will receive, since as a man he has conquered and we seem to have conquered in him; for if he conquered as God, it means nothing to us. 556 {3Jο 17, 1}3By "hour" he means the fitting time of the passion, in which he judged to suffer, as he also said in the case of the wine; he does not mean a non-existent fate. 557 {3Jο 17, 1}3Through the form of prayer he teaches us in temptations to pray and to take refuge in God. 558 {3Jο 17, 2}3So that the hearers would not be scandalized, he says economically, what you have given me. 559 {3Jο 17, 3}3It should be noted that right faith is truly life, which bestows its own good things on believers. He says he was sent not as one serving the Father's will by necessity, like the angels, but as being his power. 560 {3Jο 17, 4}3He is said to glorify the Father by doing all things for the incarnation, or by making the Father's power known through his Son, if he speaks as a man; for by what the saints accomplish, God is glorified. 562 {3Jο 17, 10}3There is nothing of the Father's which is not the Son's, and vice versa. Because of my equality with you, I am glorified by all. 563 {3Jο 17, 11}3Economically, as a man, he speaks of the name of God being given to him, though he has it by nature as God and Son. 564 {3Jο 17, 12}3He did not draw them by necessity. For this reason Judas also perished through voluntary wickedness; not only Judas, but also many others perished, not because of Christ; for as far as it depended on him, no one perished. He was called the son of perdition as one awaiting, like a kind of birth, the day of perdition. 565 {3Jο 17, 12}3According to its idiom, Scripture presents the outcomes as a cause. Judas, having learned what was foretold, should not have betrayed Christ. But if someone should say, how did he perish while Christ was guarding him, it must be said that he does not guard the wicked, but allows them with free will to do what they want; but he guards and strengthens the good, because a man's own choice is not sufficient to guard him. 566 {3Jο 17, 13}3He says these things so that they might not be disheartened, but rather rejoice, because he is going to the Father. 567 {3Jο 17, 14}3When he says they are "of the world," he means their nature. But when he says that they are not, he says this on account of their lack of wickedness, as he himself was. But the 'as' here is not one of exact, unvarying precision. What he says is this: they have become citizens of heaven and have nothing in common with the earth; for the difference of their natures is great, because he is God by nature, but they are men. 568 {3Jο 17, 17}3Since the disciples were about to do the same as Christ did, they needed, he says, the sanctification through the Spirit, so that they might be able to run through the whole world without being hindered by the evil one. 569 {3Jο 17, 17-18}3Not only for the disciples, but also for all the faithful Christ asks that the grace through the Holy Spirit be given, which reforms man into the divine image. And this union does not happen according to substance or hypostasis, but according to the harmony of faith, by which the faithful have come to know that the Son was incarnated by the good pleasure of the Father; for this is what it is to be sent. 570 {3Jο 17, 19}3All sacrifices are called holy as being offered to God. But he said "in truth" because the sanctification through the lamb was a type; or that I also offer them to you as a sacrifice; or that this happened when the head was sacrificed; or that they also presented "their bodies" "as a living sacrifice"; or also that without death he made them a sacrifice, being slaughtered for them. 571 {3Jο 17, 21}3When they are deemed worthy of the aforementioned unity, then they know that you have sent me. 572 {3Jο 17, 22}3By glory he means that of the signs
