Since matters have overtaken Bishop Gregory, which are otherwise unbearable and especially contrary to his character, it seemed best to us to flee to your protection and to find from you some solution for these misfortunes. For it is an unbearable misfortune for one who is not by nature disposed nor willing to be forced to discuss business, and for a poor man to be asked for money, and for one who long ago decided to pass his life in quiet to be dragged into public and be vexed by the populace. Whether, therefore, you should judge it useful to speak with the Count of the Treasury, or to any others, would be a matter for your wisdom.

34. TO EUSEBIUS, BISHOP OF SAMOSATA

34.1 How could we be silent in the present circumstances or, to endure this not

being able, find any words worthy of what is happening, so that our voice might not resemble a groan, but a lament adequately signifying the weight of the evil? Tarsus is lost to us. And this is not the only terrible thing, although it is unbearable; for there is something more grievous than this: that such a great city, so well-endowed as to connect Isaurians and Cilicians and Cappadocians and Syrians through itself, has become a by-product of ruin by the despair of one or two men, while you were hesitating and deliberating and looking to one another. It is best then, according to the device of physicians (and I certainly have a great abundance of such examples, on account of my constant illness), who, whenever the magnitude of the pain becomes excessive, artfully contrive insensibility for the sufferer, for our own souls also, so as not to be overcome by unbearable pains, to pray together for insensibility to our evils. Nevertheless, although we are in such a miserable state, we have used one consolation: to look to your gentleness and from the thought and memory of you to soothe the grieving part of our soul. For just as for the eyes, whenever they have stared intently at bright things, it brings some relief to return to the dark blue and green colors, so also for our souls, the memory of your gentleness and grace is like a gentle touch that removes the pain, and especially when we consider that you have fulfilled all that was in your power. From which you have shown sufficiently, even to us mortals, if we judge matters fairly, that nothing has been lost through your fault, and with God you have acquired for yourself a great reward for your zeal for good things. May the Lord grant you to us and to his Churches, for the benefit of our life and the correction of our souls, and may he deem us worthy again of your beneficial company.

35. WITHOUT SUPERSCRIPTION, ON BEHALF OF LEONTIUS

35.1 I have written to you about many things as being of importance to me, and about more

I will also write. For it is not possible to fail those in need, nor is it possible for us to refuse the favor. Yet there is no one more closely related to me, nor more able to give me rest by any good thing he might experience, than the most revered brother Leontius; whose household arrange thus, as if you were to find me myself, not in this poverty in which I now am, with God, but having some abundance and possessing lands. For it is clear that you would not have made me poor, but you would have guarded what I have or increased my abundance. This, therefore, we ask you to do also in the case of the household of the aforementioned man. And your reward for all things is the usual one from me, a prayer to the holy God for your labors, since you are noble and good and anticipate the requests of those in need.

Γρηγόριον τὸν ἐπίσ κοπον, κατέλαβε πράγματα, οὔτε ἄλλως φορητὰ καὶ μάλιστα τῷ ἤθει αὐτοῦ ὑπεναντία, ἔδοξεν ἡμῖν κράτιστον εἶναι ἐπὶ τὴν σὴν καταφυγεῖν προστασίαν καὶ παρὰ σοῦ τινα εὑρέσθαι λύσιν τῶν συμφορῶν. Συμφορὰ γάρ ἐστιν ἀφόρητος πράγματα ἀναγκάζεσθαι λέγειν τὸν μὴ πεφυκότα μηδὲ βουλόμενον, καὶ χρήματα ἀπαιτεῖσθαι τὸν πένητα, καὶ ἕλκεσθαι εἰς τὸ μέσον καὶ δημοκοπεῖσθαι τὸν πάλαι δι' ἡ συχίας τὸν βίον παρελθεῖν κρίναντα. Εἴτε οὖν τῷ Κόμητι τῶν θησαυρῶν διαλεχθῆναι χρήσιμον εἶναι κρίνῃς, εἴτε τισὶν ἑτέροις, τῆς σῆς ἂν εἴη συνέσεως.

34.τ ΕΥΣΕΒΙΩ ΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΩ ΣΑΜΟΣΑΤΩΝ

34.1 Πῶς ἂν σιωπήσαιμεν ἐπὶ τοῖς παροῦσιν ἤ, τοῦτο καρτε ρεῖν μὴ

δυνάμενοι, ἄξιόν τινα λόγον τῶν γινομένων εὕροιμεν, ὥστε μὴ στεναγμῷ προσεοικέναι τὴν φωνὴν ἡμῶν, ἀλλὰ θρήνῳ τοῦ κακοῦ τὸ βάρος ἀρκούντως διαση μαίνοντι; Οἴχεται ἡμῖν καὶ ἡ Ταρσός. Καὶ οὐ τοῦτο μόνον δεινόν, καίπερ ἀφόρητον ὄν· ἔστι γὰρ τούτου χαλεπώτερον πόλιν τοσαύτην, οὕτως ἔχουσαν εὐκληρίας ὥστε Ἰσαύρους καὶ Κίλικας καὶ Καππαδόκας καὶ Σύρους δι' ἑαυτῆς συνάπτειν, ἑνὸς ἢ δυοῖν ἀπονοίαις ἀνθρώπων ὀλέθρου γενέσθαι πάρεργον, μελλόντων ὑμῶν καὶ βουλευομένων καὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἀποσκοπούντων. Κράτιστον οὖν, κατὰ τὴν τῶν ἰατρῶν ἐπίνοιαν (πάντως δέ μοι πολλὴ ἀφθονία, διὰ τὴν σύνοικον ἀρρωστίαν, τῶν τοιούτων παραδειγμάτων), οἵ, ἐπειδὰν τὸ τῆς ὀδύνης μέγεθος ὑπερβάλλῃ, ἀναισθησίαν τῇ ἐπινοίᾳ ἐπιτεχνῶνται τῷ κάμνοντι, καὶ ταῖς ἡμετέ ραις αὐτῶν ψυχαῖς, ὡς μὴ ταῖς ἀφορήτοις ὀδύναις συνέ χεσθαι, ἀναλγησίαν τῶν κακῶν συνεύξασθαι. Οὐ μὴν ἀλλά, καίπερ οὕτως ἀθλίως ἔχοντες, μιᾷ παραμυθίᾳ κεχρήμεθα πρὸς τὴν σὴν ἀπιδεῖν ἡμερότητα καὶ ἐκ τῆς σῆς ἐννοίας καὶ μνήμης πραῧναι τῆς ψυχῆς τὸ λυπούμενον. Ὥσπερ γὰρ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς, ἐπειδάν ποτε συντόνως τὰ λαμπρὰ καταβλέψωσι, φέρει τινὰ ῥᾳστώνην πρὸς τὰ κυανὰ καὶ χλοάζοντα τῶν χρωμάτων ἐπανελθεῖν, οὕτω καὶ ταῖς ἡμετέραις ψυχαῖς οἷον πραεῖά τις ἐπαφὴ τὸ ὀδυνηρὸν ἐξαιροῦσα ἡ μνήμη τῆς σῆς πραότητος καὶ ἐμμελείας ἐστί, καὶ μάλιστα ὅταν ἐνθυμηθῶμεν ὅτι τὸ κατὰ σεαυτὸν ἅπαν ἐπλήρωσας. Ἐξ ὧν ἱκανῶς καὶ ἡμῖν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις, ἐὰν εὐγνωμόνως τὰ πράγματα κρίνωμεν, ὡς οὐδὲν ἐκ τῆς σῆς αἰτίας ἀπόλωλεν ἐνεδείξω, καὶ παρὰ Θεῷ τῆς τῶν καλῶν προθυμίας μέγαν σεαυτῷ τὸν μισθὸν κατεκτήσω. Χαρίσαιτο δέ σε ἡμῖν καὶ ταῖς ἑαυτοῦ Ἐκκλησίαις ὁ Κύριος, ἐπ' ὠφελείᾳ τοῦ βίου καὶ διορθώσει τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν, καὶ καταξιώσειε πάλιν τῆς ἐπωφελοῦς συντυχίας σου.

35.τ ΑΝΕΠΙΓΡΑΦΟΣ, ΥΠΕΡ ΛΕΟΝΤΙΟΥ

35.1 Περὶ πολλῶν μὲν ὡς διαφερόντων μοι ἐπέστειλά σοι, περὶ πλειόνων δὲ

καὶ ἐπιστελῶ. Οὔτε γὰρ τοὺς δεομένους ἐπιλιπεῖν δυνατόν, οὔτε ἡμᾶς ἀρνεῖσθαι τὴν χάριν οἷόν τε. Οὐ μήν ἐστί τις οἰκειότερός μοι, οὔτε μᾶλλον ἀναπαῦσαί με ἐφ' οἷς ἂν εὖ τι πάθοι δυνάμενος, τοῦ αἰδεσιμωτάτου ἀδελφοῦ Λεοντίου· οὗ τὴν οἰκίαν οὕτω διάθες ὡς ἂν εἰ αὐτὸν ἐμὲ καταλάβοις, μὴ ἐν τῇ πενίᾳ ταύτῃ ἐν ᾗ νῦν εἰμι σὺν Θεῷ, ἀλλ' εὐπορίας τινὸς ἐπειλημμένον καὶ ἀγροὺς κεκτημένον. ∆ῆλον γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἂν ἐποίησάς με πένητα, ἀλλ' ἐφύλαξας ἂν τὰ παρόντα ἢ ἐπέτεινας τὴν εὐπορίαν. Τοῦτο οὖν ποιῆσαί σε καὶ ἐν τῇ προειρημένῃ μοι οἰκίᾳ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς παρακαλοῦμεν. Μισθὸς δέ σοι ὑπὲρ πάντων ὁ συνήθης παρ' ἐμοῦ, εὐχὴ πρὸς τὸν ἅγιον Θεὸν ὑπὲρ ὧν κάμνεις, καλός τε καὶ ἀγαθὸς ὢν καὶ προλαμβάνων τὰς αἰτήσεις τῶν δεομένων.
