in good deeds, and to despise the rest. Chapter 1. LUKE. And he spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

DEFINITION 58. That one must not think to obtain the gift of God through money or through any other

device. Chapter 1. ACTS. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the

Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 31.789 saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. That according to the proportion of faith, gifts are given to each by God for the common good. Chapter 2. TO THE ROMANS. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith. TO THE CORINTHIANS 1. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues. That one who has freely received the grace of God must freely give, and not traffic it for his own pleasures. Chapter 3. MATTHEW. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils: freely you have received, freely give. Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses. ACTS. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up. TO THE THESSALONIANS 1. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others. when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. That he who gratefully receives the first gift from God, and diligently works it for the 31.792 glory of God, is also deemed worthy of others; but he who is not such has what he already has taken away, and is not deemed worthy of what has been prepared, and is delivered over to punishment. Chapter 4. MATTHEW. And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries
