it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking in you." But if the Spirit of the Father is of equal honor with the Father, as has been shown, and of equal honor also with the Son, as has been confessed; it is clear that the divine hypostases have an equal relationship to each other. For things that are equal to the same thing are certainly equal to one another; and the Son is equal to the Father, and the Spirit is also equal to the Son; it is clear that likewise it is equal also to the Father. Therefore, when He said that the divine Spirit speaks in the apostles, Paul, because of the unchangeableness of nature and teaching, asserts that Christ speaks in him, writing: "If you seek proof of Christ speaking in me." But it must be noted that all these things authoritatively declare the manifestation of the Spirit to have happened; and in Luke, as was said before, he said to them beforehand: "But you, stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." And this was that of the divine Spirit.

CHAP. XVIII. Having put on this strength, they were no longer easily terrified,

as it is written, that the doors were shut, with the disciples hiding for fear of the Jews, and that Peter, the chief 39.728 of the apostles, at the threat of a girl, swore that he did not know the Lord, the one who made him key-bearer of the heavens; but the twelve alone, and they not being in one place, stood against almost the whole world, crying out against whole peoples: "We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard." But they also arrayed themselves against every diabolical error, and drove out the worship of creation, and removed the so-called mist from the souls of men, which before was upon them, as they say, "That they might well know both God and man." And through the laying on of hands they delivered men from various diseases; so that even Peter's shadow falling from his body, and Paul's handkerchiefs from his skin, effected cures. And Paul wrote to the Romans: "in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit." But Peter with boldness worked against the devil, and proclaimed the divine essence of the Holy Spirit, saying to Ananias: "Why has Satan tempted your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?" For who was lied to? He said, adding: "You have not lied to man, but to God." For there was no one among them held in esteem who was a slave to money, or breathing injustice, or not looking with sober judgment, or not sincerely disposed concerning the consubstantial Trinity, even if he happened to have stepped upon the first thrones of the world, and held the highest offices in his hands. And they looked down even upon the royal purple itself, and were superior to money, possessing the unfailing treasure of the Holy Spirit. And they spoke 39.729 in other tongues, "as," it says, "the Spirit gave them utterance;" and the Galileans understood the speech of Parthians, Medes, Persians, and other foreign-tongued men, and even the Greek and Ausonian tongue; and they became many-voiced, and were shown to be such as we shall be found in the age to come, released from the bonds of this world, according to the voice of Paul: "Where there is no Greek, barbarian, Scythian; but Christ is all and in all." But it is very clear that he said this because of the sameness of substance of the Trinity: "Christ is all and in all;" since where do we seek the .....................

CHAP. XIX. ........................... or the Father should be thought to have become man. He mentioned what pertains to the Holy Spirit both dimly and clearly, so that they, having their sight illuminated little by little for the understanding of the divine oracles, and, according to Paul, coming "from glory to glory," might be able to learn the three perfect hypostases. And this is what is borne in the 17th psalm: "A people, whom I did not know,

ἐστὲ ὑμεῖς οἱ λαλοῦντες, ἀλλὰ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Πατρὸς τὸ λαλοῦν ἐν ὑμῖν." Εἰ δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Πατρὸς ὁμότιμον τῷ Πατρὶ, ὡς ἀποδέδεικται, ὁμότιμον δὲ καὶ τῷ Υἱῷ, ὡς ὡμολόγηται· δῆλον, ὅτι τὴν ἴσην καὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλας ἔχουσι σχέσιν αἱ θεῖαι ὑποστάσεις. Τὰ γὰρ τῷ αὐτῷ ἴσα, καὶ ἀλλήλοις ἴσα πάντως ἐστίν· ἴσος δὲ ὁ Υἱὸς τῷ Πατρὶ, ἴσον δὲ καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τῷ Υἱῷ· δῆλον, ὅτι ὁμοίως ἴσον ἐστὶ καὶ τῷ Πατρί. Αὐτοῦ τοίνυν εἰπόντος τὸ θεσπέσιον Πνεῦμα λαλεῖν ἐν τοῖς ἀποστόλοις, ὁ Παῦλος, διὰ τὴν ἀπαραλλαξίαν τῆς φύσεως καὶ διδαχῆς, τὸν Χριστὸν ἰσχυρίζεται λαλεῖν ἐν αὐτῷ, γράφων· "Εἰ δοκιμὴν ζητεῖτε τοῦ ἐν ἐμοὶ λαλοῦντος Χριστοῦ." Σημειωτέον δὲ, ὡς ὅλα ταῦτα τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν τοῦ Πνεύματος αὐθεντικῶς δηλοῖ γεγενῆσθαι· καὶ ἐν τῷ Λουκᾷ δὲ, ὡς προελέχθη, προείρηκεν αὐτοῖς· "Ὑμεῖς δὲ καθίσατε ἐν τῇ πόλει, ἕως οὗ ἐνδύσησθε δύναμιν ἐξ ὕψους." Αὕτη δὲ ἐτύγχανεν ἡ τοῦ θεϊκοῦ Πνεύματος.

ΚΕΦ. ΙΗʹ. Ἥντινα ἀλκὴν ἐνδυσάμενοι οὐκ ἔτι εὐκατάπληκτοι καθεστήκεσαν,

ὡς γέγραπται, ὅτι ἦσαν κεκλεισμέναι αἱ θύραι, τῶν μαθητῶν κρυπτομένων διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ ὅτι Πέτρος ὁ πρόκριτος 39.728 τῶν ἀποστόλων, διὰ κόρης ἀπειλὴν διωμνύετο μὴ εἰδέναι τὸν Κύριον, τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτὸν κλειδοῦχον τῶν οὐρανῶν· ἀλλ' οἱ δυοκαίδεκα μόνοι, καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐχ ὑφ' ἓν ὄντες, ἀντέστησαν μονονουχὶ πάσῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ, δήμοις ὅλοις ἀντικράζοντες· "Οὐ δυνάμεθα ἡμεῖς ἃ ἴδομεν καὶ ἠκούσαμεν, μὴ λαλεῖν." Ἀλλὰ καὶ πάσῃ τῇ διαβολικῇ πλάνῃ παρετάξαντο, καὶ τὴν κτισματολατρείαν ἀπήλασαν, καὶ τὴν λεγομένην ἀχλὺν ἀφεῖλον τῆς τῶν ἀνθρώπων ψυχῆς, ἣ πρὶν ἐπῆεν, ὥς φασιν, Ὄφρ' εὖ γινώσκοιεν ἠμὲν Θεὸν ἠδὲ καὶ ἄνδρα. ∆ιὰ δὲ τῆς τῶν χειρῶν ἐπιθέσεως ποικίλων νόσων ἀπήλλαττον τοὺς ἀνθρώπους· ὡς Πέτρου μὲν καὶ τὴν ἀποπίπτουσαν τοῦ σώματος σκιὰν, Παύλου δὲ καὶ τὰ σουδάρια τοῦ χρωτὸς ἰάσεις ἀποτελεῖν. Καὶ Παῦλος μὲν Ῥωμαίοις ἔγραφεν· "Ἐν τῷ πιστεύεινεἰς τὸ περισσεύειν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐλπίδι, ἐν δυνάμει Πνεύματος ἁγίου." Πέτρος δὲ μετὰ παῤῥησίας τὸν διάβολον κατειργάζετο, καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος τὴν θεϊκὴν οὐσίαν ἀνεφθέγγετο, πρὸς τὸν Ἀνανίαν λέγων· "∆ιὰ τί ἐπείρασεν ὁ Σατανᾶς τὴν καρδίαν σου ψεύσασθαί σε τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον;" Τίς γὰρ ὁ ψευσθείς; Εἶπεν ἐπαγαγών· "Οὐκ ἐψεύσω ἀνθρώπῳ, ἀλλὰ τῷ Θεῷ." Οὐκ ἦν γὰρ αὐτοῖς ἐν αἰδοῖ τις, ἥττων χρημάτων ὑπάρχων, ἢ ἄδικον ἀναπνέων, ἢ σῶφρον μὴ βλέπων, ἢ μὴ διακείμενος περὶ τὴν ὁμοούσιον Τριάδα εἰλικρινῶς, κἂν τυχὸν ἦν τοῖς πρώτοις ἐπιβεβηκὼς κοσμικοῖς θρόνοις, καὶ τὰς ἄκρας ἐν χεροῖν ἔχων ἀρχάς. Ὑπερεώρων δὲ καὶ αὐτῆς τῆς βασιλικῆς ἁλουργίδος, καὶ κρείττονες ἧσαν χρημάτων, τὸν ἀμείωτον θησαυρὸν ἔχοντες τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος. Ἐλάλουν δὲ 39.729 καὶ ἑτέραις γλώσσαις, "καθὼς," φησὶν, "τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐδίδου ἀποφθέγγεσθαι αὐτούς·" καὶ συνίεσαν ὁμιλίαν οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι Πάρθων, Μήδων, Περσῶν, καὶ ἀλλοθρόων ἄλλων ἀνθρώπων, ἔτι δὲ καὶ τὴν Ἑλλάδα καὶ Αὐσονίαν γλῶτταν· πολύφωνοί τε ἐγίνοντο, καὶ ἀνεδείκνυντο, οἷοί περ ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι αἰῶνι εὑρίσκεσθαι μέλλομεν, τῶν τοῦδε τοῦ κόσμου ἀπολυθέντες δεσμῶν, κατὰ τὴν Παύλου φωνήν· "Ὅπου οὐκ ἔνι Ἕλλην, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης· ἀλλὰ τὰ πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν Χριστός." Πρόδηλον δὲ, ὡς διὰ τὸ τῆς Τριάδος ταυτούσιον εἶπεν· "Πάντα ἐν πᾶσιν Χριστός·" ἐπεὶ ποῦ ζητοῦμεν τὸν .....................

ΚΕΦ. ΙΘʹ. ........................... ἢ ὁ Πατὴρ ἐνηνθρωπηκέναι νομισθείη. Τὸ καὶ περὶ

τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος ἀμυδρῶς ὁμοῦ καὶ τηλαυγῶς ἐμνημόνευεν, πρὸς τὸ αὐτοὺς κατὰ μέρος τὴν ὄψιν φωτιζομένους εἰς νόησιν τῶν θείων λογίων, καὶ, κατὰ τὸν Παῦλον, "ἀπὸ δόξης εἰς δόξαν" ἐρχομένους, δυνηθῆναι μαθεῖν τὰς αὐτοτελεῖς τρεῖς ὑποστάσεις. Καὶ τοῦτό ἐστιν ὅπερ ἐν ιζʹ φέρεται ψαλμῷ· "Λαὸς, ὃν οὐκ ἔγνων,
