to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, and he will go out with you to the river, and strike with your rod the waters of the river, and you will turn them to blood." And when this happened, all the waters were turned to blood, and the fish in the river died, and the Egyptians were not able to drink water, because all the waters were turned into blood. But the magicians of the Egyptians also did likewise with their sorceries; but the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not listen to them. And after seven days, Moses, having been summoned by Pharaoh, prayed, and again the waters became pure. And Moses says to Pharaoh, "Behold, you have seen the power of the God of Israel; let the people go, that we may worship God." But Pharaoh, while agreeing, delayed. And Moses prayed to God to send plagues upon the Egyptians, so that Pharaoh would be compelled to let Israel go. And the Lord God sent upon the Egyptians the tenfold wrath, so that he summoned Moses and said to him, "Pray to your God, that this land may be delivered from so many evils; and as the Lord your God lives, I will not hinder you from taking your people Israel to worship him." But Pharaoh, having gone to Memphis to the renowned oracle, and having received the aforementioned oracle, and having returned, immediately let Israel 1.85 go with Moses and Aaron. And the people took from the Egyptians for their use vessels of gold and silver and much clothing. And after they had gone out, Pharaoh repented, and pursued after them with his chariots, and he overtook them by the Red Sea. When the Israelites saw them, they cried out to God. And stretching out his hand, Moses struck the sea with a rod, and the waters were divided, and all the people crossed as through dry land. And behind him, all the Egyptians also entered together with Pharaoh with their chariots. And seeing them crossing, the Israelites were seized with infinite fear. But Moses, stretching out his rod to turn it back, restored the water to its place. And all the Egyptians fled under the water, with none being left. When the Israelites saw this, they glorified God who had delivered them, with Moses and Aaron leading, and saying, "Let us sing to the Lord, for he has been gloriously glorified," with their sister Maria following with the women, and striking the timbrel. That in the book of Jubilees it is stated that the infants of the Israelites were thrown into the river for only ten months, until Moses was taken up by the princess; for this reason ten plagues were given in ten months to the Egyptians, and finally they were destroyed in the sea in the same way they drowned the infants of the Hebrews in the river, with a thousand strong Egyptian men being drowned for each 1.86 Israelite infant. And Pharaoh's daughter adopted Moses himself into the royal family, but she did not release the Israelites from their assigned labor. But when Moses came to manhood, the Ethiopians, having crossed the Indus river, were terribly plundering Egypt, so as to overthrow almost all the cities and destroy its army and slay the generals. So they remained fighting the Egyptians for five years. Therefore, being in great difficulty, the Egyptians consult an oracle to entrust the command to Moses, and they ask Thermuthis to permit him the command; but she reproached them and showed them to be evil, along with the sacred scribes, for having wished to plot the death of the child; nevertheless, she sent him out to fight for his country, with the boy most gladly accepting the command and feeling no anxiety. For he grew, adorned with every virtue and educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, as a king's son and having a capable nature, and brave in wars. He, being thirty years old, undertook such a war; and for ten years he fought the Ethiopians to the utmost and devastated all of Ethiopia, and Saba
