to see everyone's eyes drenched with tears, and wailing and lamentation arising for the whole Church? After the communion of the mysteries, after 63.606 the enjoyment of the font, after enrolling 63.606 with Christ, was that wolf strong enough to snatch the lambs from the flock, and to hold them with himself, and you, seeing the calamity, do not weep? And how can these things be worthy of a defense? If you saw your neighbor's house on fire, tell me, even if the neighbor was the most hostile of all, would you not have run to put out the blaze, fearing that the fire, proceeding on its way, might touch your own gates? Do this also for the brothers who are being harmed by wicked demons. For the activity of demons is a certain fire and a grievous conflagration. Take heed then that the demon, proceeding on his way, does not seize your own soul first; and when you see him present, with great earnestness take refuge in the Master, so that the demon, seeing your fervent and aroused soul, might hereafter consider your mind to be inaccessible to him. For if he sees one yawning and being slothful, as into a deserted lodging, he will quickly enter in; but if he sees one intent and aroused, and hanging from heaven itself, he will no longer dare even to look upon him. Therefore, even if you despise your brothers, spare yourself, and block the entrance to your soul against the wicked demon. For nothing is so accustomed to wall off his attack against us as fervent prayer and supplication. 63.607 But if you wish to learn how great a good it is to be able, along with one's own salvation, to gain another, hear the prophet speaking from the person of God: He who brings forth the precious from the worthless is as my mouth. What he says is this: He who leads someone from error, he says, to the truth, or guides his neighbor from vice to virtue according to human ability, imitates me. For if He, being God and possessing that ineffable essence, both accepted a cross and endured all other human things for our sake and for our salvation, what ought we not justly to show towards our own kind and our own members, so as to snatch them from the throat of the devil, and lead them to the path of virtue? For if, in the case of tangible food, those who keep the things of the table for their acquaintances show the greatest proof of love, how much more, when this is done in spiritual matters, will it provide us with great praise. For he who is eager to teach his neighbor does not so much benefit him as he procures a greater reward for himself, and reaps a double profit, both enjoying a greater reward from God, and himself, when he attempts to teach his brother, being brought to remembrance and renewing the memory of what has been said by him. For if someone, setting up a lifeless image of a child or a friend or a relative, believes that departed one to be present, and through the lifeless image pictures him, much more do we, through the divine Scriptures, enjoy the presence of the saints, having images not of their bodies, but of their souls. For the things spoken by them are images of their souls. Therefore, just as physicians do not compel the sick who are lying on their beds to be brought to their houses, but they themselves run to them to heal their illnesses, so also you do according to your ability, and show all eagerness and foresight for the recovery of the brothers who are sick in soul, knowing that the present life is short. And if we do not gain these gains, we will have no salvation there; for often a single soul that has been gained can wipe away a mass of myriad sins, and become a ransom for us on that day. For if that Tabitha, having clothed widows and relieved poverty, came back from death to life, and the tears of those who had been shown mercy brought her departed soul back into her body again, when the resurrection had not yet appeared; what will the tears of men not accomplish, as many as have been
