of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it has not been given. For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. For this reason I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah ... For just as a man going on a journey called his own servants and delivered to them his goods; and to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability, and immediately went on his journey. Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. Likewise he who had received two gained two more also. And after a little: For to everyone who has, more will be given; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. RULE 59. That a Christian must not be affected by glory from men, nor cling to excessive honor, but should also correct those who honor him thus, or think more highly of him. Chap. 1. MATTHEW. And behold, one came and said to him: Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And he said to him: Why do you call me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. JOHN. I do not receive glory from men. And after a little: How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? LUKE. Woe to you Pharisees, for you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 1 THESSALONIANS. For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak for covetousness—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others. ACTS. And as it happened that Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet, 31.793 and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying: Stand up; I myself am also a man. ACTS. So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. And the people kept shouting: The voice of a god and not of a man! Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died.
RULE 60. That, the gifts of the Spirit being various, and
neither one being able to receive all things, nor all the same thing, each must soberly and thankfully abide in what has been given, and all must be in harmony with one another in the love of Christ, as members in a body; so that the one who is inferior in gifts, in comparison to the one who excels him, may not despair, nor indeed the greater
despise the lesser. For those who are divided and contentious are worthy of destruction.
Chap. 1. MATTHEW. Every kingdom, divided against itself, is brought to desolation;
and every city or house, divided against itself, will not stand. GALATIANS. But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another. JOHN. I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in me, and I in You; that they also may be one in us. ACTS. Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. ROMANS. For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body,
