taking from the spiritual David, that is, the law according to the spirit, may kill the aforementioned sons and grandsons of 77.1257 Saul; then in every way is destroyed from every border of Israel, that is, from every word and manner of spiritual contemplation, the carnal mind of the Mosaic law, and the interpretation according to the letter, according to the sense. And Rizpah, it says, took the sackcloth, and spread it for herself upon the rock, until the waters of God dripped upon them from heaven. For Rizpah is, as it has been said, the pronouncement of the law by the mouth alone, who, after the removal of the passions from it, as has been stated before, spreads repentance for herself like sackcloth upon the rock of the firm dogmas of the faith according to Christ, until the knowledge of the divine Scriptures is sent down from the height of spiritual contemplation, extinguishing the passions, but kindling the virtues. And God, it says, hearkened to the land. After these things he hearkened to it, which was in need of the inclination from above, and in a way entreating through its unadorned form. The land, then, is the heart of the penitent, and the rains, the streams of tears. And the abundance of fruits is the provision of spiritual gifts. And grain is the support of the soul through action. And wine is the gladness of the mind through contemplation. And oil is the cheerfulness and state through both, and the illumination through the Holy Spirit. And the Lord gave death in Israel from morning until the time of the midday meal. For from the morning, that is, from the first moment of human life, death because of sin was apportioned to men until the time of the midday meal, that is, from Adam until Christ. For he is the midday meal as the bread of life, and as feeding and giving us to drink with his immaculate body and precious blood. And David said: Behold, I have sinned, and I the shepherd have done wickedly; let your hand be against me, Lord. For Christ, the new David, the good shepherd, having taken our sins upon himself, laid down his soul for the sheep. And the angel, it says, stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it. And the Lord was entreated and said, It is enough now, stay your hand. For Jerusalem is the Church of the faithful for whom Christ died, and having become an advocate for us with the Father, he stayed the death-dealing hand of the destroyer. For having risen from the dead he abolished death, and became the first-fruits of immortality for the inhabitants of the Church. Then, by a divine reminder, David, where he saw the destroying angel, stood, having erected an altar, and offered whole burnt offerings and peace offerings to God. For he stood by the threshing floor of Ornan. And the threshing floor is the Church of the pious, into which, like ears of grain 77.1260, are gathered those who are reaped through the evangelical proclamation from error and unbelief, Which threshing floor he bought for 50 shekels. For Christ also bought the Church for a great price; for having established an altar of his own blood in it, I mean the altars in all the local churches, he sacrificed two oxen, by which are signified both the believing people from the circumcision and from the uncircumcision. Oxen, as having come under the yoke of the Gospel; sacrificed, as sacrificing themselves by slaughtering the passions and consuming them with the fire of the Holy Spirit. And sacrifices and peace offerings, again Christ himself, being sacrificed for each through the mystical and bloodless sacrifice, and giving peace to those who were at war with God, and reconciling us.
