having taken the ruling city of the Ethiopians, he frees Egypt from every hostile plot. From this, envy toward him begins among the Egyptians, and especially from Chenephres; for during this time Palmanothes and Thermuthis had died. And so 1.87 now he plots against him in various ways, being envious, and he entrusts the murder of Moses to Chanathothes; which Moses, learning of, kills him, and thus flees through the desert to Arabia to Jothor and Raguel, and he took his daughter in marriage, from whom he begot Gersam and Eleazar. And Moses, while in Egypt, builds two cities in the name of his mother the queen
. That Eupolemus says that Moses was the first wise man, and that he first gave letters to the Jews, and that from the Jews the Phoenicians received them, and the Greeks from the Phoenicians; and Moses first writes laws for the Jews. And Moses, having left his sojourns in Egypt, philosophized in the desert, being taught by the archangel Gabriel about the creation of the world and of the first man and of those after him, and of the flood, and of the confusion and diversity of tongues, and of matters concerning the first man, and of the times up to himself, and about the legislation that was to be given by him to the nation of the Jews, and the positions of the stars and the elements and arithmetic and geometry and all wisdom, as it is stated in the Book of Jubilees. And that in the 144th year of the bondage in Egypt the Egyptians began to receive the ten plagues. In the month of June the waters were changed into blood, in July frogs, in August gnats, in September dog-flies, in October a plague on the cattle, in November 1.88 boils and sores, in December hail, in January locusts, in February darkness for three days, in March the firstborn. On the 14th of this month, having despoiled the Egyptians, they went out, having done this by the command of God. And after the exodus Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, having taken Zipporah the wife of Moses and his two sons, came to Moses in the desert while he was still fighting Amalek. And in the third month of the exodus of the sons of Israel, the law is given on Mount Sinai, and the decalogue is given to Moses and Aaron and to all the people. And after this again Moses is commanded by God to go up the mountain with Joshua and to receive the written tablets, which God had previously legislated. Then he also sees the pattern of the tabernacle and all things concerning it. But the people make a calf, and Moses breaks the divinely-made tablets. Then again he is commanded to hew tablets and to go up the mountain. And behold, the decalogue is delivered by God a third time: first on Mount Sinai, when there were trumpets and darkness; second, at the time of the wonder of the tabernacle and the things concerning the tabernacle; third, after the making of the calf. For then he spent forty days on the mountain, eating no bread and drinking no water; but then also the glory of his face shone forth to the people. And in the eleventh year of the exodus of the sons of Israel Moses, being commanded to number the people from twenty years old and upward who had come out of Egypt, apart from women, children, and 1.89 the Levitical tribe, found six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty, from the 75 souls who entered Egypt, in 215 years. But all these perished in the desert in various ways, some through blasphemy, some through idolatry, and some through unbelief, except for Joshua and Caleb. And Joshua the son of Nun lived one hundred and ten years, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh one hundred and sixty years. That in the second numbering, when Moses and Eleazar numbered the people, not a man was found from the first numbering, when Moses and Aaron numbered the people. And the first numbering took place near Sinai, and the second by the Jordan. That having made great prayers to
