not being able to withstand those sharp pains. 59.10 So when he had given up and this was clear to those cruel spearmen, who were still inflicting blows even after death, the unapproachable beast, having with difficulty at last set aside the anger possessing him, says, "Let it be that along with that gold this man too goes to destruction; for, as it seems, even if found it would have been shown to be unprofitable." 60.1 And he ordered the commanders of the ships to prepare for the voyage, having first brought on board the ships the youthful bloom of the populace, both male and female, not according to kinship but separated, so that in this too they might have no ordinary punishment, the natural division from one another, and then thus the goods, and whatever else of the collected things might appear useful, having gathered them together to make a sufficient cargo of goods for the ships. 60.2 Therefore every young person was led away, having this alone as an accusation, the flower of their age or the beauty of their faces. 60.3 For even if the confusion of sorrows led all toward a gloomy aspect, yet their natural character revealed their nobility in their countenances; and for many their beauty was a pretext, betraying them in their terrible circumstances. 60.4 But which of these things should I speak of first? And which should I judge more pitiful according to its merit? 60.5 whenever a certain mixed and vehement lamentation arose as nature was being cut in two, with kinsmen calling out to one another and grieving at the separation. 60.6 For it was possible to see those confounded by suffering, men, women, youths in their prime, all together wailing terribly and tearing themselves, and no longer having the strength to restrain their despair at so many troubles, but revealing through their wails the inner disposition of the heart, how it was all being consumed by the flames of the trials. 60.7 For having been thus violently separated from one another, they were brought pell-mell onto the transport ships, which were both wide and sufficient to hold many multitudes; not in rows, nor, as one might say, did each of those who entered take his seat in a space sufficient for the bulk of the body, but as he chanced to be brought down once, this alone was his allotted fate, not being able in all the following days to find a space of even one hand's breadth, so that, reclining, he might give even a brief rest to his body. 61.1 And all the ships were filled in this manner; for they were, as we said, fifty-four. 61.2 And there was still a multitude remaining, it too being judged worthy of the deportation. 61.3 Therefore the barbarians, having gathered the ships of the city, which our merchants once used for transporting grain, and also having raised by some clever device those which we had sunk in the channel of the harbor (which they accomplished by means of some windlasses contrived for the jetties there and displaying laborious ingenuity, turning with some artifice and raising what lay beneath by means of suspended cables), so therefore having procured a multitude of other ships, they brought everyone in, so that not one of those appointed for this was ever left behind. 61.4 Of all of whom I do not know if any of the males had grown their first beard or if even one of the women had reached puberty. 61.5 But all, both men and women, were of a young age, and of these especially the newborn infants; whom one, considering them one by one, would lament, not being able to bear to see the misfortunes of each of them. 62.1 But against those of us who for various reasons had escaped the sword, such a decision was again proclaimed by the tyrant, that some of us, and especially as many as seemed able to endure the hardships of the voyage, being divided among those same commanders, should go aboard, five to each of the barbarian ships, and to be kept for the purpose of being sent to Tarsus on account of the aforementioned reconciliation; 62.2 but the rest, as being able to provide them nothing useful, if they should restrain them from deportation, or rather, that they would be dragging along a useless burden, it was decided to leave them to the city, and this not for the sake of any mercy, nor that he was giving them to God, as some irrationally

ταῖς δριμείαις ἐκείναις ἀλγηδόσιν οὐκ ἐξισχύσασαν. 59.10 ὡς οὖν ἀπείρηκε καὶ δῆλος ἦν τοῖς ὠμοῖς ἐκείνοις δορυφόροις, ἔτι τὰς πληγὰς ἀφιεῖσι καὶ μετὰ θάνατον, μόλις ποτὲ τῆς κατεχούσης ἑαυτὸν ὀργῆς περιάρας ὁ δυσέντευκτος θὴρ «ἔστω» φησὶ «μετὰ τοῦ χρυσίου ἐκείνου καὶ οὗτος εἰς ἀπώλειαν· ἀλυσιτελὲς γάρ, ὡς ἔοικε, καὶ εὑρεθὲν ἂν διεδείκνυτο.» 60.1 Τοῖς δὲ τῶν νηῶν ἀρχηγοῖς προσέταττε σκευάζεσθαι πρὸς τὸν ἀπόπλουν, τὴν νεάζουσαν κήραν τοῦ πλήθους ἀρρένων τε καὶ θηλειῶν πρῶτον ταῖς ναυσὶν εἰσενεγκόντας, μὴ κατὰ συγγένειαν ἀλλὰ διακεκριμένως, ἵν' ἔχωσι κἀν τούτῳ τιμωρίαν οὐ τὴν τυχοῦσαν, τὴν φυσικὴν ἐξ ἀλλήλων διαίρεσιν, εἶθ' οὕτω τὰ χρήματα, καὶ ὅσα ἄλλα τῶν συνειλεγμένων φανεῖεν χρήσιμα, συμφορήσαντας αὐτάρκη ταῖς ναυσὶ τῶν ἀγωγίμων ἐμποιῆσαι τὸν φόρτον. 60.2 ἤγετο οὖν τὸ νεάζον πρόσωπον ἅπαν, τοῦτο μόνον κατηγορίαν ἔχον, τὸ ἀνθηρὸν τῆς ἡλικίας ἢ τῶν προσώπων τὴν ὡραιότητα. 60.3 κἂν γὰρ ἡ σύγχυσις τῶν λυπηρῶν ἅπαντας πρὸς τὸ σκυθρωπὸν ἦγεν, ἀλλ' ὁ φυσικὸς χαρακτὴρ ἐδήλου ταῖς ὄψεσι τὴν εὐγένειαν· καὶ πρόφασις ἦν τοῖς πολλοῖς τὸ κάλλος, ἐν τοῖς δεινοῖς αὐτοὺς προδιδόμενον. 60.4 ἀλλὰ ποῖον τούτων πρῶτον ἐξείπω; ποῖον δὲ κατ' ἀξίαν ἐλεεινότερον κρινῷ; 60.5 ὁπότε συμμιγής τις καὶ σφοδρὸς ἀνήγερτο θρῆνος διχοτομουμένης τῆς φύσεως, ἀλλήλους τοὺς ἀγχιστεῖς ἀνακαλουμένους καὶ τὸν χωρισμὸν δυσχεραίνοντας. 60.6 καὶ γὰρ ἦν ἰδεῖν τοὺς τῷ πάθει συγκεχυμένους, ἄνδρας γυναῖκας, ἀκμάζοντας παῖδας, ὁμοῦ πάντας δεινὸν ἀλαλάζοντας καὶ ἑαυτοὺς διαρρηγνύντας, καὶ μηκέτι κατέχειν τὴν ἀθυμίαν τῶν τοσούτων ὀχληρῶν ἐξισχύοντας, ἀλλὰ δηλοῦντας ταῖς οἰμωγαῖς τὴν ἔνδον τῆς καρδίας διάθεσιν, ὡς ἅπασα καταπίμπραται τῶν πειρασμῶν ταῖς φλογώσεσιν. 60.7 ὡς γὰρ βιαίως οὕτως ἐξ ἀλλήλων διαιρεθέντες φύρδην ταῖς ὁλκάσιν εἰσήχθησαν, εὐρείαις τε οὔσαις καὶ ἱκαναῖς πλήθεσι πολλοῖς ἐξαρκεῖν, οὐ κατάστοιχα, οὐδ' ὡς ἄν τις εἴποι, ἐν αὐτάρκει τόπῳ τοῦ σωματικοῦ ὄγκου τῶν εἰσελθόντων ἕκαστος τὴν καθέδραν ἐλάμβανεν, ἀλλ' ὡς ἔτυχεν ἅπαξ κατενεχθείς, τοῦτο μόνον ἀπεκεκλήρωτο, μὴ δυνηθεὶς ἐν ὅλαις ταῖς ἐφεξῆς ἡμέραις ἕως μιᾶς παλαιστῆς τόπον ἐφευρεῖν, ἵν' ἀνακλιθεὶς ἀνάπαυσιν δῷ κἂν βραχεῖαν τῷ σώματι. 61.1 Πᾶσαι δὲ αἱ νῆες τῷ τρόπῳ τούτῳ πεπλήρωντο· τέτταρες γὰρ οὖσαι, καθὼς ἔφαμεν, καὶ πεντήκοντα. 61.2 ἔτι δὲ πλῆθος ἦν περιττεῦον, ἄξιον καὶ αὐτὸ κρινόμενον τῆς ἀποδημίας. 61.3 οἱ οὖν βάρβαροι συναγαγόντες τὰς νῆας τῆς πόλεως, αἷς ἐχρῶντό ποτε πρὸς τὸ τὸν σῖτον ἐπικομίζειν οἱ καθ' ἡμᾶς ἔμποροι, ἔτι δὲ καὶ ἃς ἦμεν βυθίσαντες κατὰ τοῦ πορθμοῦ τοῦ λιμένος σοφίσματί τινι ἀνελκύσαντες (ὃ καὶ ἐνήργησαν διά τινων στροφίγγων τοῖς ἐκεῖσε προβόλοις ἐπιτετηδευμένων καὶ τὴν ἐπίνοιαν ἐργώδη δεικνύντων, ἑλισσομένων τινὶ τεχνάσματι καὶ διὰ τῶν ἀπῃωρημένων κάλων ἀνελκυόντων τὸ ὑποκείμενον), οὕτως οὖν καὶ ἄλλων νηῶν πληθὺν εὐπορήσαντες εἰσεκόμισαν ἅπαντας, ὡς μηδένα πώποτε τῶν εἰς τοῦτο τεταγμένων παραλειφθῆναι. 61.4 ἐξ ὧν ἁπάντων οὐκ οἶδα εἴ πού τις τῶν ἀρρένων τὸν ἴουλον ἐτετρίχωτο ἢ κἂν μία τῶν γυναικῶν ἥβασκεν. 61.5 πάντες δὲ καὶ πᾶσαι νέαν ἦγον τὴν ἡλικίαν, καὶ τούτων μάλιστα τὰ ἀρτιγενῆ βρέφη· οὓς ἄν τις καθ' ἕνα λογιζόμενος κατεκλᾶτο, μὴ σθένων ὁρᾶν τὰ καθ' ἕκαστον αὐτῶν ἀτυχήματα. 62.1 Καθ' ἡμῶν δὲ τῶν κατὰ διαφόρους αἰτίας ἐκφυγόντων τὸ ξίφος ἐκηρύχθη τοιαύτη παρὰ τοῦ τυράννου καὶ αὖθις ἀπόφασις, ὥστε τοὺς μὲν ἐξ ἡμῶν, καὶ μάλιστα ὅσους ἔδοξε τὰ τοῦ πλοὸς ἐγκαρτερῆσαι δυναμένους ἐπίπονα, μετ' αὐτῶν ἐκείνων τῶν στρατηγῶν διαιρεθέντας εἰσελθεῖν ἀνὰ πέντε ἐφ' ἑκάστης τῶν βαρβαρικῶν νηῶν, τηρεῖσθαί τε χάριν τοῦ πρὸς τὴν Ταρσὸν διαπεμφθῆναι λόγῳ τῆς εἰρημένης καταλλαγῆς· 62.2 τοὺς λοιποὺς δέ, ὡς μηδέν τι χρηστὸν αὐτοῖς δυναμένους πορίζειν, εἴ γε τῆς ἀποδημίας κατάσχωσι, μᾶλλον μὲν οὖν καὶ ἀνωφελῆ φόρτον αὐτοὺς ἐπισύρεσθαι, ἔδοξεν ἐπαφεῖναι τῇ πόλει, οὐδὲ τοῦτο φειδοῦς τινος ἕνεκεν, οὐδ' ὅτι τῷ θεῷ παρεῖχε, καθώς τινες τοὺς βαρβάρους πράττειν ἀλόγως
