spiritual? Do you see how he took away all their pretense by saying, With your own hands. Does one work at fasting 62.430 with his hands? or at all-night vigils? or at sleeping on the ground? No one would say that; but he speaks of a spiritual work; for it is truly spiritual for the one who works to provide for others, and nothing is equal to this. That you may walk, he says, decently. Do you see from what point he touches them? He did not say, That you may not behave indecently by begging, but he hinted at the same thing, and put it more gently, so as both to strike them and not to weigh them down too heavily. For if those among us are scandalized by these things, much more so are those from without, finding countless accusations and handles, when they see a healthy person, who is able to provide for himself, begging, and in need of others. Therefore they even call us Christ-traffickers; For this reason the name, he says, of God is blasphemed. But he mentioned none of these things, but rather what had the most power to touch them, that of indecency. But we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope. 2. These two things especially were vexing them, poverty and despondency, which vex all people. See then how he heals them. And their poverty was from their possessions having been seized. And if he commands those whose possessions were seized for Christ's sake to support themselves by working, much more so the others. For that they were seized, is clear from his saying, You became imitators of the Churches in Judea. How? Because in writing to them he said: And you joyfully accepted the seizure of your possessions. Here, then, he introduces the discourse concerning the resurrection. And what? Had he not discoursed with them about this? But here he hints at some other mystery. What then is this? That we who are alive and remain, he says, until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. The discourse of the resurrection, then, is sufficient to console one in grief; and what is now said is sufficient to make the resurrection trustworthy. But first let us say that which he himself said, But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope. See how gently here also. He did not say, Are you so senseless, as to the Corinthians, so foolish, that knowing of a resurrection, you grieve as those who do not believe; but very gently, I do not want you, he said, respecting their other virtue. And he did not say, concerning the dead, immediately from the outset setting down the consolation. That you may not grieve, he says, as do the rest who have no hope. Therefore to beat one's breast for those who have departed belongs to those who have no hope; and rightly so. For a soul that knows nothing of a resurrection, but considers this death to be death, rightly beats its breast and wails and mourns inconsolably as for those who are lost; but you who expect a resurrection, for what reason do you lament? Therefore to lament belongs to those who have no hope. Hear, all you women who are fond of wailing, all you who bear yourselves inconsolably in mourning, that you are doing the things of the Gentiles. But if to grieve for those who have departed is of the Gentiles, to beat one's breast and 62.431 to tear one's cheeks, whose is it then, tell me? For what reason do you wail, if you believe that he will rise again, that he has not perished, that the matter is sleep and a slumber? On account of companionship, she says, and protection, care of affairs, all the other service. When, then, you lose a child at an untimely age, who was not yet able to do anything, for what reason do you wail? what are you seeking? He showed good hopes, she says, and I expected that he would be my protector. For this reason I seek my husband, for this reason my son, for this reason I beat my breast and wail, not disbelieving in the resurrection, but because I have become desolate of help, and have lost my protector, my companion, the one who shared in all things, the one who comforted me;

Ὅρα οὖν πῶς αὐτὰ θεραπεύει. Πενία δὲ αὐτοῖς ἦν ἐκ τοῦ ἡρπάσθαι αὐτῶν τὰ χρήματα. Εἰ δὲ ὧν τὰ χρήματα ἡρπάζετο διὰ τὸν Χριστὸν, τούτους κελεύει ἐργαζομένους τρέφεσθαι, πολλῷ μᾶλλον τοὺς ἄλλους. Ὅτι γὰρ ἡρπάγη, δῆλον ἐκ τοῦ εἰπεῖν, Ὑμεῖς μιμηταὶ ἐγένεσθε τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν τῶν ἐν Ἰουδαίᾳ. Πῶς; Ὅτι ἐκείναις γράφων ἔλεγε· Καὶ τὴν ἁρπαγὴν τῶν ὑπαρχόντων ὑμῶν μετὰ χαρᾶς προσεδέξασθε. Ἐνταῦθα λοιπὸν τὸν περὶ ἀναστάσεως λόγον κινεῖ. Καὶ τί; οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς περὶ τούτου διαλεχθείς; Ἀλλ' ἐνταῦθα ἕτερόν τι αἰνίττεται μυστήριον. Ποῖον δὴ τοῦτο; Ὅτι ἡμεῖς οἱ ζῶντες οἱ περιλειπόμενοι, φησὶν, εἰς τὴν παρουσίαν τοῦ Κυρίου, οὐ μὴ φθάσωμεν τοὺς κοιμηθέντας. Ψυχὴ γὰρ οὐδὲν περὶ ἀναστάσεως ἐπισταμένη, ἀλλὰ τὸν θάνατον τοῦτον θάνατον εἶναι νομίζουσα, εἰκότως ὡς περὶ ἀπολωλότων κόπτεται καὶ θρηνεῖ καὶ ἀφορήτως πενθεῖ· σὺ δὲ ὁ προσδοκῶν ἀνάστασιν, τίνος ἕνεκεν ὀδύρῃ; Ἄρα τῶν μὴ ἐχόντων ἐλπίδα ἐστὶ τὸ ὀδύρεσθαι. Ἀκούσατε τῶν γυναικῶν ὅσαι φιλόθρηνοι, ὅσαι πρὸς τὰ πένθη ἀφορήτως φέρεσθε, ὅτι τὰ τῶν ἐθνικῶν πράττετε. Εἰ δὲ τὸ ἀλγεῖν ἐπὶ τοῖς ἀπελθοῦσιν ἐθνικῶν, τὸ κατακόπτεσθαι καὶ 62.431 καταξαίνειν παρειὰς, τίνων ἄρα ἐστὶν, εἰπέ μοι; Τίνος ἕνεκεν θρηνεῖς, εἰ πιστεύεις ὅτι ἀναστήσεται, ὅτι οὐκ ἀπόλωλεν, ὅτι ὕπνος καὶ κοίμησις τὸ πρᾶγμά ἐστι; Συνηθείας ἕνεκεν, φησὶ, καὶ προστασίας, πραγμάτων ἐπιμελείας, τῆς ἄλλης θεραπείας ἁπάσης. Ὅταν οὖν παῖδα ἀπολέσῃς ἐν ἀώρῳ ἡλικίᾳ, οὐδὲν οὐδέπω πρᾶξαι δυνάμενον, τίνος ἕνεκεν θρηνεῖς; τί ἐπιζητεῖς; Ἐλπίδας, φησὶ, χρηστὰς ἐνέφαινε, καὶ προσεδόκων ὅτι μου προστήσεται. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ζητῶ τὸν ἄνδρα, διὰ τοῦτο τὸν υἱὸν, διὰ τοῦτο κόπτομαι καὶ θρηνῶ, οὐκ ἀπιστοῦσα τῇ ἀναστάσει, ἀλλ' ἔρημος βοηθείας γενομένη, καὶ τὸν προστάτην ἀπολωλεκυῖα, τὸν σύνοικον, τὸν ἐν πᾶσι κοινωνοῦντα, τὸν παρηγοροῦντα·
