the mystical operation of his becoming human has reached its end, having been made like us in every way, except for sin alone, and having descended into the lower parts of the earth, where the tyranny of sin had thrust man, so too the mystical operation of man's deification will surely reach its end, in every way, except, of course, for identity with Him in essence, making man like Himself and raising him above all the heavens, where the greatness of grace, which is by nature, through the infinity of goodness calls man who lies below; which the great apostle mystically teaches when he says that in the ages to come the surpassing riches of God's kindness toward us will be shown.

Let us then also divide the ages in our minds, and let us set apart some for the mystery of the divine Incarnation, 14Β_136 and others for the grace of human deification, and we shall find that the former are at their proper end, while the latter have not yet arrived. And, to put it briefly, some of the ages are of God's descent to men, and others are of men's ascent to God. Understanding it this way, we do not stumble over the obscurity of the divine words, thinking that the divine apostle suffered a tautology.

Or rather, since our Lord Jesus Christ is the beginning, middle, and end of all the ages, past, present, and to come, it is fitting that the end of the ages—which is to be in actuality by grace for the deification of the worthy—has come upon us in power through faith.

Or again, since the principle of acting is one thing and the principle of being acted upon is another, the divine apostle mystically and wisely divided the principle of acting and being acted upon between the past ages and the future ages. For instance, the ages of the flesh, in which we now live—for Scripture also knows of temporal ages, as in, "he has labored for an age and will live to the end"—are the property of acting, while the future ages of the Spirit after the present life belong to the transformation of being acted upon. Therefore, being here, as actors we come to the ends of the ages, our power and operation in acting reaching its end. But in the ages to come, undergoing by grace the transformation toward being deified, we do not act but are acted upon, and for this reason we do not cease from being deified. For then what is undergone is beyond nature and has no defining principle for the infinite deification of those who undergo this. For we act, inasmuch as we have by nature an active rational power productive of the virtues and an intellectual power receptive of all knowledge 14Β_138 that in its unhindered power traverses the whole nature of things that are and are known and leaves all the ages behind itself; and we are acted upon when, having completely traversed the principles of things that come from non-being, we come unknowably to the cause of beings and we shall bring our own powers to rest along with things that are by nature finite, becoming that which is in no way an achievement of our natural power, since nature does not possess a power capable of comprehending what is beyond nature. For nothing created is by nature capable of producing deification, since it is not even capable of comprehending God. For this is by nature the property of divine grace alone: to grant deification to beings in proportion, and illuminating nature with the light that is beyond nature and raising it above its own limits through the excess of glory.

Therefore the ends of the ages have rightly come upon us who are about to receive through the grace in Christ the gift of good things that are beyond ages and nature, of which the modes of the virtues and the principles of things that can be known by nature have become types and prefigurations, through which God always wishing in the worthy
