He heals by spitting, in order that He might pierce with fear those who a little later were about to insult Him with their spittle; and yet He did not put to shame the audacity of those who raged, but He who achieved such things by means of spittle was greatly spat upon. Of this first action, He hints at His creative power, and by commanding him to wash in the pool of Siloam, He shows to us the salvation through water, which He who was sent (Siloam) bestowed upon all. 7.6.2 For then we see well, when we are cleansed by the mystical water; then the light of grace shines around us, when the power of baptism washes away the filth of sins and the stains. And all we who are washed according to the command of Siloam, see the spiritual light, which enlightens every man coming into the world. O the wonder and the great power! 7.6.3 He who a little before was blind came away from the pool, his face adorned with the addition of eyes, seeing clearly toward the sun's ray. The event amazed the neighbors and acquaintances. The new manner of healing disturbed their life; the man went about the city seeing, so that he might be seen by all, a new and paradoxical work having been done by Jesus who was born in Bethlehem, that little infant who was wrapped in swaddling clothes in the manger. For these are the things which caused the Jews to disbelieve in His divinity. 7.7.1 Therefore, O foolish and hard-hearted ones, apply your reasoning to the men from ages past. Beginning from Adam, investigate all those who followed, if you find what has now happened having been done by others, if life has an example of such a healing; and again, for the slander of my Lord, you bring forward the carpenter's son, whose brothers you know, whose house you know. 7.7.2 Recount all the humble things, be contentious, pour out great dishonor upon us. But if neither man has done anything of the sort nor has life held such a story, then, condemning your own ignorance, look up toward the truth. Wash yourselves also in Siloam, so that you may not die in your blindness. 7.7.3 But, as it seems, nothing availed with them. No word instructed, no deed taught, no working of wonders put them to shame; but on the contrary, on account of their conceited ingratitude, in all things they attempted in countless ways to obscure and to slander; but their malice was turned back on them to the contrary. 7.7.4 For the more they disbelieved and by questioning strove to overturn it, the more the truth was confirmed; and they suffered the same thing as those wild beasts, which, having been struck by someone and not yet having received the whole point in their belly, by their rush and contention against the man thrust the whole blade into themselves. 7.8.1 First officious inquiry: Whether this was the blind man himself and not another shown in his place; with the man clearly testifying and crying out and clearly reporting the sequence of the healing, that clay, the remedy for blindness, was smeared on, that the pool, having washed off the clay, provided sight. The neighbors inquired into these things and learned; the Pharisees investigated and were not persuaded. 7.8.2 A second device for the annulment of what had happened was employed: to try to show that it was not the Christ who had worked the cure. But since the man proclaimed the Savior and by his confession and preaching returned the favor and made his benefactor public, having their mouths stopped, their minds reeling, not having anything to do, 7.8.3 they run back again to the investigation of the affliction and whether he was blind from birth, this they investigate, and they seek out the man's parents and become precise examiners of the details, not in order to confirm what had been done, but in order to find some way to subvert the wondrous deed and, having fabricated some false plot, to turn back the believing multitude from their impulse. O excess of wickedness!

πτύων θεραπεύει, ἵνα κατανύξῃ πρὸς φόβον τοὺς μικρὸν ὕστερον ὑβρίζειν τοῖς ἐμπτύσμασι μέλλοντας· καὶ ὅμως οὐκ ἐδυσώπησε τῶν μαινομένων τὸ θράσος, ἀλλ' ἐνεπτύσθη πολλὰ ὁ τοιαῦτα κατορθῶν διὰ πτύσματος. Τῆς πρώτης ταύτης πράξεως τὴν δημιουργικὴν ὑποφαίνει δύναμιν καὶ διὰ μὲν τοῦ προστάξαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωὰμ νίψασθαι τὴν δι' ὕδατος σωτηρίαν ἡμῖν ἐνδείκνυται, ἣν πᾶσιν ὁ ἀπεσταλμένος (Σιλωὰμ) ἐχαρίσατο. 7.6.2 Τότε γὰρ καλῶς βλέπομεν, ὅτ' ἂν τῷ μυστικῷ καθαρθῶμεν ὕδατι· τότε φῶς ἡμᾶς περιλάμπει τῆς χάριτος, ὅτ' ἂν ἡ δύναμις τοῦ βαπτίσματος τὸν ῥύπον τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων καὶ τὰς κηλῖδας ἐκνίψῃ. Καὶ πάντες ὅσοι τῇ ἐντολῇ τοῦ Σιλωὰμ ἀπολουόμεθα, τὸ πνευματικὸν ὁρῶμεν φῶς, ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον. Ὢ τοῦ θαύματος καὶ τῆς μεγάλης ἐνεργείας! 7.6.3 Ἀπῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς κολυμβήθρας ὁ πρὸ ὀλίγου τυφλὸς κοσμηθεὶς τὸ πρόσωπον τῇ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν προσθήκῃ, βλέπων ἀκριβῶς πρὸς τὴν ἡλιακὴν ἀκτῖνα. Ἐξέπληττε τοὺς γείτονας καὶ τοὺς γνωρίμους τὸ πρᾶγμα. Ἐθορύβει τὸν βίον ὁ καινὸς τῆς θεραπείας τρόπος· περιενόστει τὴν πόλιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος βλέπων, ἵνα βλέπηται παρὰ πάντων ἔργον γενόμενον καινὸν καὶ παράδοξον ὑπὸ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ ἐν Βηθλεὲμ γεννηθέντος, τοῦ μικροῦ βρέφους ἐκείνου τοῦ ἐν τῇ φάτνῃ τοῖς σπαργάνοις ἐνειληθέντος. Ταῦτα γάρ ἐστιν, ἃ τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἀπιστεῖν ἐποίει τῇ θεότητι. 7.7.1 Οὐκοῦν, ὦ ἀνόητοι καὶ παχυκάρδιοι, ἐπιβάλετε τὸν λογισμὸν τοῖς ἐξ αἰῶνος ἀνθρώποις. Ἀπὸ τοῦ Ἀδὰμ ἀρξάμενοι τοὺς ἑξῆς πάντας διερευνήσατε, ἐὰν εὕρητε τὸ νῦν γενόμενον καὶ ἐπ' ἄλλων πραχθέν, ἐὰν ἔχοντα τὸν βίον τοιαύτης θεραπείας ὑπόδειγμα· καὶ πάλιν ἐπὶ διασυρμῷ τοῦ Κυρίου μου τὸν τοῦ τέκτονος προφέρετε παῖδα, οὗ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς γνωρίζετε, οὗ τὴν οἰκίαν ἴστε. 7.7.2 Ἀπαριθμεῖσθε πάντα τὰ ταπεινά, φιλονεικήσατε, πολλὴν ἡμῶν καταχέατε τὴν ἀδοξίαν. Εἰ δὲ μηδὲν τοιοῦτον μήτε ἄνθρωπος ἔπραξε μήτε ὁ βίος ἔσχε διήγημα, καταγνόντες ἑαυτῶν τῆς ἀγνοίας λοιπὸν πρὸς τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἀναβλέψατε. Νίψασθε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν Σιλωάμ, ἵνα μὴ ἐναποθάνητε τῇ τυφλότητι. 7.7.3 Ἀλλ' οὐδὲν ὡς ἔοικεν ἐπ' ἐκείνων. Οὐ λόγος ἐπαίδευεν, οὐ πρᾶξις ἐδίδασκεν, οὐκ ἐνέργεια θαυμασίων ἐδυσώπει· πάντα δὲ τοὐναντίον διὰ τὴν ἔντυφον ἀγνωμοσύνην μυρίοις τρόποις ἐπεχείρουν ἀφανίζειν καὶ διασύρειν· περιετρέπετο δὲ αὐτοῖς πρὸς τοὐναντίον ἡ κακουργία. 7.7.4 Ὅσῳ γὰρ ἠπίστουν ἐκεῖνοι καὶ προσερωτῶντες ἀνατρέπειν ἐσπούδαζον, τοσούτῳ πλέον ἐβεβαιοῦτο ἡ ἀλήθεια· καὶ ταὐτὸν ἔπασχον τῶν θηρίων ἐκείνοις, ἃ πληγέντα παρά τινος καὶ μηδέπω πᾶσαν τὴν αἰχμὴν ἐν τῇ γαστρὶ δεξά μενα τῇ πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὁρμῇ καὶ φιλονεικίᾳ ὅλον ἐφ' ἑαυτὰ συνωθεῖ τὸν σίδηρον. 7.8.1 Πρώτη πολυπραγμοσύνη· Εἰ οὗτος αὐτὸς ὁ τυφλὸς καὶ μὴ ἕτερος ἀντ' ἐκείνου ἐδείχθη· τοῦτο σαφῶς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου διαμαρτυρομένου καὶ κεκραγότος καὶ τὴν ἀκολουθίαν τῆς θεραπείας σαφῶς ἀπαγγέλλοντος, ὅτι καὶ πηλὸς κατεχρίσθη τὸ τῆς τυφλότητος φάρμακον, ὅτι καὶ κολυμ βήθρα τὸν πηλὸν ἀπονίψασα τὸ βλέπειν παρέσχεν. Ταῦτα περιεργάζοντο γείτονες καὶ ἐμάνθανον· ἀνεζήτουν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οὐκ ἐπείθοντο. 7.8.2 ∆ευτέρα τέχνη εἰς ἀθέτησιν τοῦ γενομένου παρελαμβάνετο τὸ πειρᾶσθαι δεικνύειν, ὡς οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ ἐνεργήσας τὴν θεραπείαν. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ ἄνθρωπος τὸν σωτῆρα ἐβόα καὶ τῇ ὁμολογίᾳ καὶ τῷ κηρύγματι ἀντεδίδου τὴν χάριν καὶ τὸν εὐεργέτην ἐδημοσίευεν, ἀποφραττόμενοι τὰ στόματα, ἰλιγγιῶντες τὴν γνώμην, οὐκ ἔχοντες ὅ τι καὶ πράξωσιν, 7.8.3 ἐπὶ τὴν τοῦ πάθους πάλιν ἀνατρέχουσι ζήτησιν καὶ εἰ ἐκ γενετῆς τυφλός, τοῦτο περιεργάζονται καὶ τοὺς γονεῖς ἀναζητοῦσι τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ ἀκριβεῖς ἐξετασταὶ γίνονται τῶν καθ' ἕκαστον, οὐχ ἵνα βεβαιώσωσι τὸ πραχθέν, ἀλλ' ἵνα ἀνατροπήν ποθεν τοῦ θαυμασίου λάβωσι καὶ ψευδῆ τινα σκευωρίαν κατασκευάσαντες τὸ πιστεῦον πλῆθος τῆς ὁρμῆς ἀνατρέ ψωσιν. Ὢ κακίας ὑπερβολή!
