his people, and let him die, because you provoked me at the water of strife." And Moses brought Aaron up to the mountain, and stripped him of the priestly garments, and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron died in the fortieth year of the exodus of the sons of Israel, having lived 123 years. And the people wept for him for thirty days. And after these things the Lord said to Moses, "Go up to Mount Nebo, and see the land which I am giving to the sons of Israel, and die there in the same way that Aaron your brother died, because you disobeyed my word at the water of strife of Kadesh." But when Moses had begged God much and often concerning this, and said, "Let me cross the Jordan, O Lord, that I may see that good land," the Lord said to him, "Let it be sufficient for you. See that you do not approach me again to speak of this, but having seen the good land with your eyes, die." And having written the great song by the command of the Lord, and laid his hands on Joshua the son of Nun for him to succeed him, 1.93 he died there by the word of the Lord, having lived 120 years. And the people buried him and wept for 40 days, but no one saw his burial place. And there has not risen a prophet since in Israel like Moses. From then, therefore, and until now a luminous cloud overshadows that place, obscuring and walling off the sight of those who look, so that they may not know his tomb for ever. And after Moses, Joshua the son of Nun succeeded to the leadership, and having crossed the Jordan, and having spent 32 years in the promised land warring and allotting it to the sons of Israel, he died, having lived 110 years. And Moses, having struck Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan, who was left of the giants, dwelling in Rephaim in Ashtaroth, being a descendant of Rapha, whose bedstead was of iron, nine cubits in length and four in breadth, took all their land. And Joshua, having subdued all their land and the Canaanites and Perizzites and Girgashites and Hittites and Jebusites and Amorites and Hivites and all their kings, being thirty-two in number, gave all their land to the sons of Israel. And as they fled, it says, from the face of the sons of Israel, the Lord also cast hailstones upon them from heaven, and there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword, with Joshua leading the army.
1.94 Yet this man, though he was shown to be great and a worker of wonders and very beloved of God, was not without grief and various temptations. Concerning him the divinely-speaking Chrysostom also said, "Consider how great is a righteous man. Joshua son of Nun said, 'Let the sun stand still over Gibeon and the moon over the valley of Elom.' And it came to pass; for it says, 'And the sun stood still in the middle of the sky for a whole day, and there was no such day before or since, that God obeyed a man.' This is greater than that of Moses. But indeed even this wonderful, great, and wonder-working man, succeeding Moses, shared with him, so to speak, in all afflictions. For not only while Moses lived did he tear his garments and pour ashes on himself, but also after he died he again fell into a greater necessity than this, lying prostrate for a whole day because of the sin of Achan and the defeat of the people. For it says, 'And Joshua tore his garments, and fell on his face before the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads, and Joshua said: I pray, Lord, why did your servant bring this people across the Jordan, to deliver them to the Amorite to destroy us? And what shall I say, since Israel has turned its back before its enemy? And when the Canaanite and all the inhabitants of the land hear of it, they will surround us
