Or have you forgotten the apostolic legislation, which commands us to be ready to make a defense? Let us consider it this way. Does the best general engage only the enemy, and shoot arrows, and hurl javelins, and break the phalanx, or does he also arm and arrange the soldiers and sharpen their minds for courage? {ERAN.} He should rather do the latter. {ORTH.} For it is not characteristic of a general to face danger and be drawn up for battle himself, but to let the soldiers sleep on both their ears, but rather to rouse them also for the battle line. {ERAN.} True. {ORTH.} This is what the divine Paul also does. For writing to the faithful he said: "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." And again: "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth," and what follows. But remember what we also said before, that the physician also adds the quality that is lacking in the constitution. For if he finds the cold quality to be in excess, he adds the hot, and likewise the others; this the Lord also did. {ERAN.} And where will you show the Lord to have done this? {ORTH.} In the divine gospels. {ERAN.} Show me then, and fulfill your promise. {ORTH.} What did the Jews think the savior Christ was? {ERAN.} A man. {ORTH.} But that he was also God, they were completely ignorant? {ERAN.} True. {ORTH.} Therefore, was it necessary for the ignorant to learn this? {ERAN.} It is agreed. {ORTH.} Listen then to him saying to them: "Many good works I have shown you from my Father; for which of those do you stone me?" If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken— 130 do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God?' If I am not doing the works of my Father, do not believe me.
