accusing, but those entrusted by the emperor with the care of good order prevented the murder. For having snatched away the victorious man and having arranged for him to board a boat, they secured his safety. And he, having reached the emperor, informed him of the whole tragedy that had been dared; but they sent to the Mareotis some of the like-minded bishops; I mean Theogonius of Nicaea and Theodorus of Perinthus and Maris of Chalcedon and Narcissus the Cilician and those of their faction. The Mareotis is a region of Alexandria, named after Lake Maria. In this place, having woven a falsehood and fabricated some records and having composed the exposed slanders as true accusations, they sent them to the emperor. But they themselves came to Aelia; for the emperor had ordered the entire synod 88 to proceed from Tyre to Aelia. He also commanded all the others to gather from all quarters and to dedicate the churches built by him. He also sent along some of the more trusted officials, who were distinguished for piety and faith, having commanded that all things be supplied generously to all, not only to the high priests and priests and their attendants, but also to all the needy who were flocking together from all places. And the divine altar was adorned with both imperial draperies and golden, jeweled treasures. Thus, when the festival had become most splendid, some returned to their own native lands, and the emperor, having learned of the magnificence and splendor of the festival, was filled with joy and praised the Provider of good things for granting him this request as well. But when the admirable Athanasius came, lamenting the unjust judgment, he commanded the accused bishops to appear. But they, when they arrived and, suspecting the obviousness of the refutations, abandoned the former slanders, and said to the emperor that Athanasius had threatened to cut off the grain supply. Believing these words, the emperor banished him to a certain city of the so-called Gauls; Trier was its name. This was the thirtieth year of his reign. When another year and a few months had passed, while staying in Nico 89 media of Bithynia, he fell ill. And understanding the uncertainty of human life, he received the gift of divine baptism. He had postponed it until this time, desiring to receive it in the Jordan river. He left his three sons as heirs to the empire, Constantine and Constantius and Constans the youngest. And he ordered the great Athanasius to return to Alexandria, and this while Eusebius was present and attempting to persuade him to the contrary. Let no one be surprised if, having been deceived, he banished such great men. For he trusted deceiving high priests who concealed their wickedness but otherwise had a distinguished reputation. And those who are instructed in divine things know how even the divine David, the meekest and so great a prophet, was deceived. And it was not a high priest who deceived him but a house-born slave and a scoundrel; I mean Ziba, who told the king falsehoods against Mephibosheth and usurped his land. And I say these things, not to accuse the prophet, but to offer a defense on behalf of this emperor and to show the weakness of human nature, and to teach that one must not trust only the accusers, even if they are very worthy of credit, but must keep one of the two ears for the accused. 90 So then the emperor passed on to the better kingdom. And the prefects and the generals and all the rest, having placed him in a golden coffin, conveyed him to Constantinople, with the whole army leading and following and bitterly lamenting their loss; for they all had experience of a gentle father. And how much honor that body received, and how long it remained in the palace, the officials awaiting his son's
