7.8.4 To fight against the truth and not worship the one who does these things, but to slander the benefactor; not to marvel at the power, but to try to belittle the deeds. Be convinced even by the parents, O Pharisees, that the man was born with blindness; and again you run back to the blind man, being fully informed by him a second and third time of your evil arguments and plots. 7.8.5 But when you fail in the first attempt, you proceed to the second; when in the second, to the third; when in the third, to the next. You run the courses of a malicious fox and everywhere the nets of truth have surrounded you; but the way out of the wonderful event is inescapable. Nevertheless, you neglect no entanglement, weaving a spider's web, plotting variously, but weakly and ineffectually. 7.9.1 Your disease is from your fathers. Like children of unbelieving fathers. They were saved from wars in a new way and beyond hope, and they disbelieved the one giving them salvation; they were fed with food surpassing nature and were more ungrateful than those who were starving; they received manna sent from heaven and longed for the stench of the Egyptian garlic and onions; 7.9.2 by day they were shaded by a pillar of cloud, so that they might not suffer from the heat of the sun's ray, and by night they were illuminated by a pillar of fire, having received another new luminary besides the moon, an exceptional one, and as if enjoying no divine power, they thus demanded new and celestial gods, so that Moses, being detained for a short time on the mountain for the giving of the law, might delay his return. 7.9.3 You are truly heirs of their ingratitude, both not loving the law and hating grace, needing not the governance of a nut-wood rod, but of an iron one. 7.10.1 You see a man who has come into the light, but who remained in darkness far into his life, with his sight inoperative, guided by the eyes of others, sitting daily before the temple, making public his misfortune, so that he might draw many to pity, having the city as a witness of his affliction, now seeing and healed quickly, not by a composition of various drugs, nor by incisions of iron, but by clay alone, and this made with spittle; 7.10.2 and how are you not amazed, not astonished, not falling to the ground do you worship the one who from earth created eyes and revere the divine power? But you are rent with envy and are jealous of God as a rival artisan, as craftsmen of a craftsman, as kinsmen of one of equal honor. 7.10.3 And when you encounter the ancient books, as many as were written for the economy of the people, and as many as clearly teach the reigns of the kings and the history concerning them, you obediently accept what is said about each one, so as to consider Moses almost a god and to marvel exceedingly at Elisha and to praise his teacher, the Tishbite; 7.10.4 and all the saints of each generation, who were empowered by God and accomplished great and celebrated deeds, you raise to honors equal to the angels; and you do not dispute at all about the ancients, nor do you reject the interpretation of the fathers, and this though men are by nature not very easily brought to the faith of hearing; 7.10.5 but what you saw later with your own eyes upon his eyes and what you can touch with your fingers and grasp accurately with your sense, this you maliciously treat with disbelief and ingratitude together, both trampling on prophecies and overturning the fulfillment of the predictions. For the things now seen in experience, Isaiah long ago taught through his words: Behold our God renders judgment and will repay; he himself will come and save us. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall hear; then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall be clear. 7.10.6 These are not the words of Peter and John,

Ἐκ πολέμων ἐσώζοντο καινῶς καὶ παρ' ἐλπίδας καὶ τῷ διδόντι τὴν σωτηρίαν ἠπίστουν· ἐτρέφοντο τροφαῖς ὑπερβαινούσαις τὴν φύσιν καὶ τῶν λιμωττώντων ἦσαν πλέον ἀχάριστοι· μάννα ὑπεδέχοντο οὐρανόθεν πεμπόμενον καὶ τῶν Αἰγυπτιακῶν σκορόδων τε καὶ κρομμύων τὴν δυσωδίαν ἐπόθουν· 7.9.2 στύλῳ νεφέλης τὴν ἡμέραν ἐπεσκιάζοντο, ἵνα μὴ τῇ θέρμῃ τῆς ἡλιακῆς ἀκτῖνος ταλαιπωρήσωσι, καὶ στύλῳ πυρὸς ἐν νυκτὶ κατελάμποντο ἄλλον φωστῆρα καινὸν παρὰ τὴν σελήνην λαβόντες ἐξαίρετον, καὶ ὡς οὐδεμίας ἐνεργείας θεϊκῆς ἀπολαύοντες οὕτως καινοὺς καὶ μετεώρους ἐζήτουν θεοὺς εἰσπράττοντες, ἵνα μικρὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους κατασχεθεὶς Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῇ δόσει τοῦ νόμου τὴν ἐπάνοδον παρελκύσῃ. 7.9.3 Ὑμεῖς ἀληθῶς κληρονόμοι τῆς ἐκείνων ἀγνωμοσύνης καὶ τὸν νόμον οὐκ ἀγαπήσαντες καὶ τὴν χάριν μισοῦντες, οὐ ῥάβδου καρυΐνης ἐπιστασίας, ἀλλὰ σιδηρᾶς χρῄζοντες. 7.10.1 Ἄνθρωπον ὁρᾶτε παρελθόντα μὲν εἰς φῶς, ἐν σκότῳ δὲ μέχρι πόρρω τῆς ἡλικίας διατελέσαντα ἀνενέργητον τὰς ὄψεις, ἀλλοτρίοις ὀφθαλμοῖς ὁδηγούμενον, καθ' ἡμέραν πρὸ τοῦ ἱεροῦ καθήμενον, δημο σιεύοντα τὴν συμφοράν, ἵνα πολλοὺς εἰς ἔλεον ἐφελκύσηται, τὴν πόλιν ἔχοντα τοῦ πάθους μάρτυρα, βλέποντα νῦν καὶ ἰαθέντα ταχέως, οὐ φαρμάκων ποικίλων συνθέσει, οὐδὲ σιδήρου τομαῖς, ἀλλὰ πηλῷ μόνῳ, καὶ τούτου διὰ σιέλου γενομένου· 7.10.2 καὶ πῶς οὐ τεθήπατε, οὐκ ἐκπλήτ τεσθε, οὐ καταβάλλοντες εἰς γῆν προσκυνεῖτε τὸν ἀπὸ γῆς ὀφθαλμοὺς κτίσαντα καὶ σέβετε τὴν θεϊκὴν ἐνέργειαν; Φθόνῳ δὲ διαρρήγνυσθε καὶ ζηλοῦτε τὸν Θεὸν ὡς ἀντίτεχνον, ὡς δημιουργοὶ δημιουργόν, ὡς ὁμόφυλοι τὸν ὁμότιμον. 7.10.3 Καὶ παλαιᾶς μὲν ἐντυγχάνοντες βίβλοις, ὅσαι ἐπὶ τῇ τοῦ λαοῦ οἰκονομίᾳ ἐγράφησαν, καὶ ὅσαι τὰς τῶν βασιλέων ἀρχὰς καὶ τὴν ἐπ' ἐκείναις ἱστορίαν σαφῶς ἐκδιδάσκουσιν, εὐπειθῶς περὶ ἑκάστου τὰ λεγόμενα παραδέχεσθε, ὡς Μωϋσέα μὲν μικροῦ δέοντος νομίζειν Θεὸν καὶ Ἑλισσαῖον ὑπερθαυμάζειν καὶ τὸν τούτου διδασκάλον τὸν Θεσβίτην ὑμνεῖν· 7.10.4 καὶ πάντας τοὺς καθ' ἑκάστην γενεὰν ἁγίους τοὺς ἐνεργηθέντας παρὰ Θεοῦ καὶ τὰ μεγάλα καὶ ἀοίδιμα καταπραξαμένους, ἰσαγγέλους ἀνάγετε ταῖς τιμαῖς· οὐδὲν δὲ ζυγομαχεῖτε περὶ τῶν ἀρχαίων, οὐδὲ ἀθετεῖτε τὴν τῶν πατέρων ἐξήγησιν, καὶ ταῦτα πεφυκότων ἀνθρώπων μὴ λίαν εὐκόλως ἀνάγεσθαι πρὸς τὴν πίστιν τῆς ἀκοῆς· 7.10.5 ὃ δὲ ὀφθαλμοῖς ὑστέροις ἐπὶ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν εἴδετε καὶ ἃ τοῖς δακτύλοις ἔξεστι ψηλαφῆσαι καὶ ἀκριβῶς τῇ αἰσθήσει καταλαβεῖν, ταῦτα ἀπίστως καὶ ἀγνωμόνως ὁμοῦ κακουργεῖτε καὶ προφητείας καταπατοῦντες καὶ τὴν ἔκβασιν τῶν προρρήσεων ἀνατρέποντες. Τὰ γὰρ νῦν ἐπὶ τῆς πείρας ὁρώμενα καὶ πάλαι φθάσας Ἡσαΐας διὰ τῶν λόγων ἐδίδαξεν· Ἰδοὺ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν κρίσιν ἀνταποδίδωσι καὶ ἀνταποδώσει· αὐτὸς ἥξει καὶ σώσει ἡμᾶς. Τότε ἀνοιγήσονται ὀφθαλμοὶ τυφλῶν καὶ ὦτα κωφῶν ἀκούσονται· τότε ἁλεῖται ὡς ἔλαφος ὁ χωλὸς καὶ τρανὴ ἔσται γλῶσσα μογιλάλου. 7.10.6 Ταῦτα οὐ Πέτρου καὶ Ἰωάννου τὰ ῥήματα,
