afterwards he was hungry. And the tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread. But he answered and said, It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, and so forth.

RULE 63. That a Christian ought not to fear, and be anxious in

circumstances, being lifted away from his confidence in God; but to be of good courage, as the Lord 31.801 is present, and ordering the things concerning him, and towards all

strengthening, and as the Holy Spirit teaches even to an answer to adversaries.

Chapter 1. MATTHEW. Do not fear those who kill the body, the

but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows. LUKE. And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, do not be anxious about how or what you should answer, or what you should say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say. MARK. And a great windstorm arose; and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. And he was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. And they woke him and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said to them, Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith? ACTS. And the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy; and they laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the public prison. But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, Go, and standing in the temple speak to the people all the words of this life. And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and were teaching. 2 CORINTHIANS. For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia. And after a little; who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; on whom we have set our hope that he will yet deliver us.

RULE 64. That one ought to rejoice in suffering anything whatsoever, even unto death, for the sake of the

name of the Lord and of his commandments. Chapter 1. MATTHEW. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for

theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you, when they revile you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against 31.804 you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. LUKE. Blessed are you, when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy; for behold, your reward is great in heaven. ACTS. And when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for the name of the Lord. And every day in the temple and in every house they did not
