nor the things that are in the world: if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. Therefore, our divine and God-bearing Fathers, having understood these things, and having heard the Apostle, that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of heaven, hastened after holy baptism to preserve the garment of incorruption spotless and undefiled; whence some of them also undertook to receive another baptism, I mean that of blood and of martyrdom; for this too has been named a baptism, and a most honorable and venerable one indeed; for it is not defiled by second pollutions of sin; which our Lord also, having received on our behalf, rightly called a baptism. Hence, having become imitators and zealous followers of him, first his eyewitnesses 170 and disciples and apostles, and then also the whole chorus of holy martyrs, giving themselves over for the name of Christ to kings and tyrants who served idols, endured every kind of torment, consorting with wild beasts and fire and swords, and, having confessed the good confession, having finished the race and kept the faith, they obtained the prizes of righteousness, becoming companions of the Angels and co-heirs with Christ; whose virtue shone so greatly that their sound went out into all the earth, and the radiance of their achievements flashed to the ends of the inhabited world. Of these, not only the words and the deeds, but also their very blood and bones are full of all holiness, driving out demons with power, and providing cures for incurable diseases to those who touch them with faith; and their garments and whatever else approached their precious bodies, are always venerable to all creation. Concerning whom there is much to be said in narrating their valiant deeds in detail. But when those harsh and beastly tyrants perished miserably, and the persecution ceased, and faithful kings reigned throughout the whole inhabited world, others succeeding them and imitating the zeal of those, I mean of the martyrs, and their divine longing, and being wounded in their souls with the same love, considered it best to present their soul and body undefiled to the Lord, having cut off all the activities of the passions, and having cleansed themselves 172 from all defilement of flesh and spirit. And since they knew that this is not achieved otherwise but through the keeping of Christ's commandments, and they understood that the keeping of the commandments and the practice of the virtues with difficulty came to pass in the midst of the tumults of the world, they devised for themselves another life, a strange and altered one, and, according to the divine voice, leaving all things behind—parents, children, friends, relatives, wealth and luxury—and hating all things in the world, they went off to the deserts, like certain fugitives, being destitute, afflicted, tormented, wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes of the earth, distancing themselves from all pleasant and enjoyable things on earth, and having very little of bread and covering itself; having contrived these two things, in order that, by not seeing the material causes of the passions, they might uproot their desires from the soul, and, having wiped out their memories, they might implant in themselves a love and longing for divine and heavenly things; in addition to these, in order that, by exhausting the flesh through hardship and becoming martyrs by intention, they might not fail to attain the good repute of those perfected through blood, but that they themselves also might be imitators of the sufferings of Christ, as much as was in their power,

Ἐπεὶ δὲ οἱ μὲν ἀπηνεῖς ἐκεῖνοι καὶ θηριώδεις τύραννοι κακοὶ κακῶς ἀπώλοντο, καὶ ὁ διωγμὸς ἔπαυσε, βασιλεῖς δὲ πιστοὶ ἀνὰ πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐβασίλευσαν, διαδεξάμενοι ἕτεροι καὶ μιμησάμενοι τὸν ζῆλον ἐκείνων καὶ τὸν θεῖον πόθον, λέγω δὲ τῶν μαρτύρων, καὶ τῷ αὐτῷ ἔρωτι τὰς ψυχὰς τρωθέντες, ἄριστα διεσκόπουν ἀρρύπαντον τὴν ψυχὴν καὶ τὸ σῶμα τῷ Κυρίῳ παραστῆσαι, πάσας τὰς τῶν παθῶν περικόψαντες ἐνεργείας, καὶ παντὸς μολυσμοῦ σαρκὸς καὶ πνεύματος 172 ἑαυτοὺς ἐκκαθάραντες. ἐπεὶ δὲ οὐκ ἄλλως τοῦτο, ἀλλὰ διὰ τῆς φυλακῆς τῶν ἐντολῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ κατορθοῦσθαι ἔγνωσαν, τὴν δὲ φυλακὴν τῶν ἐντολῶν καὶ τὴν ἐργασίαν τῶν ἀρετῶν δυσχερῶς ἐν μέσῳ τῶν τοῦ κόσμου θορύβων προσγίνεσθαι κατενόησαν, ἄλλον τινὰ βίον ξένον καὶ ἐνηλλαγμένον ἑαυτοῖς ἐπετηδεύσαντο, καί, κατὰ τὴν θείαν φωνήν, πάντα καταλιπόντες, γονεῖς, τέκνα, φίλους, συγγενεῖς, πλοῦτον καὶ τρυφήν, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ μισήσαντες, πρὸς τὰς ἐρήμους, ὥσπερ τινὲς φυγάδες, ᾤχοντο, ὑστερούμενοι, θλιβόμενοι, κακουχούμενοι, ἐν ἐρημίαις πλανώμενοι καὶ ὄρεσι καὶ σπηλαίοις καὶ ταῖς ὀπαῖς τῆς γῆς, πάντων τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς τερπνῶν τε καὶ ἀπολαυστικῶν ἑαυτοὺς μακρύναντες, καὶ αὐτοῦ δὲ τοῦ ἄρτου καὶ σκεπάσματος λίαν ἐνδεῶς ἔχοντες· δύο ταῦτα πραγματευσάμενοι, ἵνα, μὴ ὁρῶντες τὰς ὕλας τῶν παθῶν, προρρίζους αὐτῶν τὰς ἐπιθυμίας ἐκ τῆς ψυχῆς ἀνασπάσωσι, καί, τὰς αὐτῶν ἐξαλείψαντες μνήμας, ἔρωτα καὶ πόθον τῶν θείων καὶ οὐρανίων ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἐμφυτεύσωσι· πρὸς τούτοις, ἵνα, διὰ τῆς κακοπαθείας τὸ σαρκίον ἐκδαπανήσαντες καὶ μάρτυρες τῇ προαιρέσει γενόμενοι, μὴ ἀποτύχωσι τῆς εὐκλείας τῶν δι' αἵματος τελειωθέντων, ἀλλὰ μιμηταὶ καὶ αὐτοὶ τῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθημάτων, ὅσον τὸ ἐπ' αὐτοῖς,
