nor are these the words of any new and suspect persons, that you should suspect a gratifying eulogy and reject the truth, but the words are of your prophecy, if you recognize the Tekoite, the son of Amos, a prophet, the son of a prophet, a man of the Israelite race, the summation of the way of life according to the law. But to God be glory, might, honor, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
8.t.1 An encomium of Asterius, bishop of Amasea, on the holy and chief apostles Peter and Paul
8.1.1 All these customary honors for the martyrs, celebrated according to law, are sacred festivals and eternal memorials of those who have acted bravely for God; in which the leaders of the churches, when they come to speak, comparing their own abilities to the greatness of the subjects, immediately in their prefaces take refuge in asking for indulgence and making excuses, and they say that they diminish the magnificence of the deeds by the smallness of their speech. 8.1.2 But if those who are about to praise each of the martyrs shrink from the praise and with a clear voice confess their own weakness, what would I become today, I who have the teachers of the martyrs set before me for praise, the genuine and first disciples of Christ, the fathers of the churches, the only trustworthy heralds of the gospel, those who spoke to God and received the voice from God in their ears? 8.1.3 However, because the subject is very lofty and the undertaking difficult, let us not love idle and unproductive silence, like the cowardly and unseaworthy, who, shrinking at the mere sight of the sea, neither endure to board the ship at all nor to sail a little along the shores for the sake of a trial; but entrusting the undertaking to the thrice-blessed themselves, on whose behalf we have assembled today, let us try to contribute what we can to the gladness of the others. 8.1.4 For I know that what will be sought is not as much as is owed to them, the great and divine, but as much as can be found from us, the poor. I would wish, therefore, that a small part of that grace were granted to me today, by which each of these saints, having partaken, the one taught the disobedient in Jerusalem, while the other, having taken his stand on the Areopagus in Athens, converted the superstitious from their polytheistic error, pointing out Christ to them and proclaiming the mystery of true piety. For thus we would have shown ourselves to accomplish something of the task before us and not fall far short of its greatness. 8.2.1 But since the great gifts of the Spirit are for the great, and I am unworthy to be enriched with such graces, I will add my poverty along with my eagerness for you, as Elisha added the herbs with the flour, not lacking the honor of surely preferring what is good. But let none of you who will listen think that having chosen to eulogize noble men, I will follow the rules of worldly wisdom. 8.2.2 For we are not producing flattery with contrived art, but we are eager to present to you with truth the virtue of God-loving souls. Therefore, lineage will be passed over in silence and the eminence of fathers will not trouble the discourse. Flesh and blood will not inherit the kingdom of God. Nor will we honor the citizens of heaven with earthly and worldly things, but quite the contrary, an obscure life of fathers and menial trades and the reproach that is called poverty, these things will be mentioned in the praises. 8.2.3 For the glory of Christians according to the gospel is the
