more excellent than his disciples, such as Peter and Paul and the rest of the apostles; and that these are in no way inferior to Jesus. And that their souls, coming from the super-eminent power Ep. of the same sphere, and for this reason likewise despising l. c. Int. despising the world-makers, have been deemed worthy of the same power, and again depart to the same place. And if anyone should despise the things here more than he did, he could be more excellent than him. 1.20.2 Therefore, practicing magical arts and incantations, both love-potions and charms, and familiars and dream-senders and the other wicked practices, claiming to have power to rule even over the rulers and makers of this world, and not only them, but also all the things made in it, who also themselves, for the slander of the divine name of the Church, were put forth l. as also the Gentiles by Satan, so that men, hearing their doctrines in one way or another, and thinking that we are all such, may turn their ears away from the preaching of the truth, adj. or even seeing their deeds may blaspheme us all. And they say that souls are transmigrated to such an extent until they have fulfilled all sins; and when nothing is lacking, then, having been freed, it departs to that God who is above the world-making angels, and thus all souls will be saved. But if any, having managed in one coming to be mixed up with all sins, are no longer transmigrated, but having paid all their debts at once, they will be freed from being in a body any longer. 1.20.3 And whether the godless, and lawless, and forbidden things are practiced among them, I would not believe. But in their writings it is so recorded, and they themselves so explain it, saying that Jesus spoke in a mystery to his disciples and apostles in private, and deemed them worthy to hand these things down to the worthy and to those who obey. For one is saved through faith and love; but the other things, being indifferent, according to the opinion of men, are considered in some places good, in others evil, with nothing being evil by nature. 1.20.4 Some of these also brand their own disciples on the back parts of the lobe of the right ear .... and they also make .... images of Christ, saying that one was made by Pilate at that time ... 1.21.1 A certain CERINTHUS, himself also trained in the education of the Egyptians, said that the world was not made by the first suppl. God, but by a certain power that was separated, suppl. and distant from that authority which is over all things, and which was ignorant of the God who is over all. And he supposed that Jesus was not born of a virgin, but that he was the son l. son of Joseph and Mary, in the same way as all other men, and that he was more just Int. and more prudent and wiser. And that after his baptism, the Christ l. from that authority which is over all things, descended upon him in the form of a dove; and that he then preached the known l. unknown Father, and performed mighty works, but at the end, the Christ departed from Jesus, and Jesus suffered and was raised, but the Christ remained impassible, being paternal l. spiritual. But the EBIONITES confess that the world was made by the true God; but concerning Christ they tell myths similarly to Cerinthus and Carpocrates. And a certain CERDON, having taken his starting-points from the school of Simon, and having come to stay in Rome in the time of Hyginus, who held the ninth place in the episcopal succession from the apostles, taught that the God proclaimed by the law and the prophets was not the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the one was to be known Hipp. was known, but the other was unknowable Hipp. unknown; and the one was just, but the other was good. SUCCEEDING him, however, Marcion of Pontus expanded the school, blaspheming shamelessly. From Saturninus and Marcion, those called Encratites preached abstinence from marriage, setting aside the ancient creation of God, and quietly
